Ella would be home any moment and Chloe was bound and determined for things to be perfect when she arrived. She'd spent the majority of the afternoon cooking with the intention of making a dinner that would knock Ella's socks off. The large plates were covered in food, large steaks covered in caramelized onions, mashed potato volcanoes overflowing with homemade gravy, and a slightly more healthy and colorful portion of steamed vegetables, cut into neat strips.
The table was set with candles in the middle and glasses of expensive wine that Chloe had bought just for the occasion. Ella had been very distant lately and it had Chloe worrying that maybe she wasn't doing enough, or that Ella wasn't happy, and she just couldn't have that. She hoped a good dinner and the surprise waiting in their shared bedroom would be enough to cheer her up.
Chloe had even dressed for the occasion and spent an hour and a half just curling her hair. Even she had thought she looked pretty when she looked in the mirror. When she heard the jingling of keys outside the door, Chloe squeaked and straightened the silverware on the table before running to turn off the lights, letting all the candles she had lit earlier light the apartment and stood just in front of the door.
As it opened, Chloe smiled at her girlfriend. “Welcome home.” She moved in front of her and took her bag, setting it on the back of the couch, then pressed a little kiss to the corner of her mouth. “I made dinner.” Which wasn't unusual at all, but the candlelight and the fancy dress were a little out of character. Chloe really didn't want to spring her worries on Ella right away, and the other woman always seemed more open after a good meal.
