Shiloh just had to be dating Matt, didn't she? That girl always got exactly what she wanted, even if they weren't going to last very long. Still, Matt seemed just her type. Neither of them wanted anything serious, so why was she concerned about Matt getting hurt? Probably because she believed he had more of heart than Shiloh ever would, but now the question was, why did she care about that? They were essentially perfect for each other, and next to Shiloh, Miranda didn’t believe that she stood a chance. They were both beautiful, they were both pheromone manipulators, she just couldn’t compete with that.

Ordering a 6” sub from the Subway in the mall, Miranda paid and took it to a small table for two, and sat, alone. She sighed, searching the empty spot before her. Coming back to Pilot Ridge had been harder than she wanted it to be. She was supposed to go to school and have that be her life, not become entangled in all this drama that was Matt. He was funny, charming, sexy, and... her friend. Was that it? Sometimes she thought there was more, but Miranda would never ask him, not when he was dating one of her best friends.

Her phone blipped, and she checked it. Speak of the devil.

She smiled only a little, turning her head as her steel grey eyes fell onto the interrupting form that was Matt.

Lately Matt had been missing Miranda. Sure, they had biology class together, and she met him after football practice, but it wasn’t the same. He had Shiloh to take up his free time, but he wanted his best friend now. He’d been trying to get into contact with her for the past week, but she’d been busy, or he’d been busy. So their time together had been spent in the classroom and the library, where they would pour over books and such and study for their exams. And lately, Matt had noticed, Mira had grown lovelier and lovelier, until he couldn’t keep his eyes off her.

She was his best friend. Why have romantic feelings now?

He was walking around the mall when he spotted her. Russet hair, straight back, pale skin…it made him flush with heat when he saw the nape of her neck. He wanted to nibble on it until he had the taste of her in his mouth. He shot off a quick text message to her as he composed himself, walking behind her in his jeans and a black shirt that read “You look like I could use a drink.” When she turned to face him, he gave her his sexy smile that never ceased to make her roll her eyes at him.

“Hello there, beautiful,” he said as he swung a chair and sat backwards on it, laying his arms over the back as he faced her. “Seems like we’re always running into each other.” He looked at her sandwich and saw a pickle fall out to land on the wrapper. He reached over and grabbed it, putting it into his mouth with a grin. “So tell me what’s new in the land of Miranda Suery, best friend to the hottest football player in Vermont.”

The combination of Matt’s shirt and his attractivestupid smile caused Miranda to have just the reaction he thought she would have. “Hi Matt,” she said simply, although she couldn’t get rid of the smile on her face. She pushed back a lock of her dull brown hair, and looked down at her sandwich just in time to watch the pickle fall, before it was being put into her friend’s mouth, where her lips lingered a little longer than they should have. Just the way he went about things, it was entrancing.

“What do you mean we’re always running into each other? Because class and studying doesn’t really count, and you’ve been pretty busy lately,” she said, alluding to Shiloh. He didn’t have to pretend with her, she knew what was going on. She didn’t dispute the other sentiments though.

“Well I’m done with classes for today, as you already know,” she said, taking another dainty little bite from her food. Miranda didn’t eat that much, her thin stature was a testament to that. “As for what’s new,” she swallowed, and glanced at him, “I have an exam to study for next week.” There, that would be enough for him to understand she was busy right? Truth was, she had already studied for the thing, and whatever was to be covered still she would have plenty of time for, she was just overly scheduled in that regard.

He was handsome as hell. She would flirt with him if she didn’t find the whole procedure awkward. Mira would rather just throw herself at him, but that didn’t seem right now that he had a girlfriend, who wasn’t her. The girl tugged her black jacket off, an orange scarf splayed across small shoulders, a deep purple button up blouse underneath. “What are you doing here?” She asked, genuinely interested, for the most part anyways. It would be just her luck to find out he was meeting up with Shiloh here.
