Cole's insides were a storm of emotion once again. He had messed up his relationship with Tae before and now Anna. Frankly, he was getting tired of all the lies he was starting to hear as well. Apparently, Lerna had gotten into Anna's mind and duped her into dumping him and blaming it all on him. Why did he keep letting stupid little things get to him? He needed a distraction.
The distraction he needed came in the form of a phone call from his boss. When he was asked to work, he didn't hesitate to say yes. He'd gotten dressed and headed to the club. His jeans looked like they'd been through hell, but the rest of his clothes looked fine. His car roared down the highway as he kept the pedal to the floor, finally slowing down as he entered Pilot Ridge. It didn't take long before he was in the parking lot and getting out of his car.
As he shut the door behind him, he reached back into the backseat and grabbed his guitar. After that he headed inside, cigarette in his lips. When he walked in, the smell of sweat and alcohol floated into his nostrils. A welcome scent in Cole's mind at this point. The club was warm, the heat from the many bodies dancing wildly fueling it's heat as the air outside cooled when the sun went down.
He was immediately seen and greeted by multiple patrons. Most of them saying they'd missed him while he'd been off work for the last week. He wasted no time in getting up on stage and doing what he did best, "I know y'all missed me, and thank you for the warm welcome." He said to the crowd of people, "I missed all of y'all, too. Whattya say we get to some music playin' and some romancin'? Afterall, now that I'm single again, maybe someone out there feels lucky tonight?"
His flirting didn't go unanswered as numerous girls began hollering and screaming in hope that one of them could end up with Cole at the end of the night. Unlikely, but Cole always had to play to the crowd. It was his stage presence that gave him his power, "I'm not sure if any of y'all have heard music from this band, but I love them. Any one here ever heard of South 40 Band? It's a little band from my hometown and one I'm so glad to see has made some great leaps of success. I'm gonna perform a song in tribute to them tonight." Cole finished explaining the songs he was going to play and began to pick a few chords of his guitar:
Payin' bills...
Payin' dues...
Just keeps me runnin' in these worn out shoes.
I don't know how much I have to give.
I bide my time just to get away
But I just keep clockin' in every day
After makin' a livin' what can I do?
(CHORUS)
Well, this nine-to-five keeps me alive
but it's killin' my reputation
All the late night scenes and honkey-tonk dreams
Seems like they just ain't worth replacin'
For a small paycheck that the IRS gets
To pay for my rise to be....
In a place they call: The Land of the Free
(END CHORUS)
I get up at first mornin' light
That's when I used to go to bed at night
What ever happened to those days?
My body's broke and my spirit's too
And I can't do the things I used to do
Lord don't let me die here in this place
(CHORUS)
