Beheading Friends (Ulrich.)

What's going on? Ulrich thought to himself as the ambient sounds that filled with winter air suddenly vanished. The sound of chirping birds, humming wind, and all the other normal noises heard around campus were totally gone. He looked around, confused at first, but once looked back at Jalen to see her smiling, everything began to make sense. He concluded that she must have some sort of sound manipulating power. "That's impressive," he said before realizing that no sound actually came from his mouth. A shy grin appeared on his face as he felt a hint of embarrassment.

The sudden sound of Jalen's voice that penetrated the silence shocked him, but it was also very relieving. He didn't show it at all, but if he had to spend much longer in complete silence, Ulrich felt he was going to go insane from sensory deprivation.

The boy took a few steps closer to Jalen and took an insightful look into her eyes. His face was stern and somber, but an out of the blue smile quickly destroyed the awkward expression. His arms lowered his hands down into the snow and he tossed up as much as he could. The snow filled the air around the two and offered a temporary smokescreen for Ulrich to use to escape. He happily ran off and hid around the corner of the nearest building.

He didn't quite know if the influence of her sound manipulating abilities were going to effect him now that there was some distance between them, but he wasn't ready to find out. He quickly scooped up enough snow to make a snowball and held it at the ready while he waited for Jalen to come running around the corner to find him.

Jalen watched in amusement as surprise crossed Ulrich’s face. Next he tried speaking and it didn’t work, but Jay could read lips and she smiled her thank-you. She was more than happy to receive compliments on her powers, although his were nothing to scoff at either. Then she got a good look at his eyes and wondered what he was thinking. Then he smiled and was gone in a flutter of snow, just like that. He was awfully mysterious wasn’t he?

They were playing now, and Jalen loved playing. Probably the only thing she loved more than a game was winning said game. “Come out come out wherever you are...” She said into the air, watching the soundwaves bounce off the buildings and everything else around her. Jalen picked up her own ball of snow and edged her way closer to Ulrich. She knew exactly where he was, as his silhouette came through when the soundwaves bounced off his body.

Thinking strategically, Jay crouched down before poking her head around the building. Betcha he didn’t see that one coming. She threw a bit of snow at him before laughing, “Surprise!” She said, falling over in the snow instead of getting up like she had wanted to. Jalen screeched a little, hurting her own ears before the snow engulfed her body. She looked up at the white sky and laughed again. “Well since I’m here!” She said, moving her arms and legs back and forth to make a snow angel.

Jalen craned her neck to look over at Ulrich. “Come on, help me up then, I don’t want to ruin it!” She held her hands out for him to take.

"Huh?" Ulrich muttered before looking down at a crouched Jalen peeking her head around the corner. That was definitely something he did not expect to see. Who crouches before they move around a corner anyway? Now that Ulrich began thinking about it, he figured it would be a great tactical move to try out next time he plays Derek in Call of Duty. Ulrich never loses to Derek, but he couldn't wait to see his cousin's reaction when he switches things up a bit by killing him Jalen style.

Before he could react physically to Jalen's sneaky maneuver, Ulrich found himself getting over-dramatically clobbered by the snow she through. "Oh! Ah! Nooo!" he shouted as he playfully fell to the ground in defeat. "You got me!"

While on the ground, he mimicked Jalen's actions and made a snow angel of his own (although it looked more along the lines of a snow blob by the time he was through). Once he was finished, he stood up, walked over to the girl, and answered her cry for help. He grabbed her hands and pulled her upwards with a surprising amount of strength for someone of his size and stature.

Ulrich pulled Jalen up with enough force to send her crashing into him and knocking them both to the ground. Ulrich hit the soft snow first and Jalen landed sort of gently on top of him.

Nervousness and a feeling of discomfort overwhelmed Ulrich because of their close and now very intimate looking contact. He was blushing while squirming apprehensively for his freedom at the same time. Ulrich was more than capable of forcing her off, but his awkwardness was shining through. He literally had no clue what he should do.

If the subject did come up, Jalen would be able to give her fellow blonde all kinds of advice when it came to video gaming, especially a FPS. She would also kick his ass at said game, just throwing that in there. Jalen had style up the yin yang, and they would probably become fast friends through common interests. The once shy boy was opening up sooner than she thought, but it was how Jay worked – fast and furious. She became closely acquainted with people around her and she hoped Ulrich would be her friend soon. This, however, was way more fun than gaming, for the time being anyways.

The girl was laughing now as she enjoyed herself and the cold around her. Winter was her favourite season, she was making that pretty clear. Any other girl would have called a quits a long time ago and demand to go inside into the warmth. Jalen sprung upwards from the powdery snow and back onto her own two feet – but not for long. She screeched, again, before landing on top of the boy with an “Oof,” her hands over his chest as she pressed herself away from him.

“If I didn’t know any better I would think you did that on purpose,” she said with a smirk, hovering over him for only a moment before standing once more, brushing her hands against her legs before reaching out her hand to help him up instead. “At least the angels aren’t ruined right?” She offered with a soft smile, her entire body covered in snow which was now melting. Jalen wasn’t fazed easily, especially by a boy who had no idea what he was doing when it came to being around girls.

“You wanna go for cappuccinos or something? Warm up?” She offered, readjusting her toque once they were both standing.

"N-no, I didn't do it on purpose," Ulrich began explaining. He was telling the truth, but he feared Jalen wouldn't believe him.

Ulrich stood up on his own without grabbing Jalen's hand for help. His eyes glanced over toward the snow angels, which managed to survive their fall. "Yeah, they're alive," he said while sarcastically wiping his eyebrows. Upon second glance at their snow angels, he noticed how much prettier Jalen's was. Ulrich's looked more like a snow demon than an angel. It was deformed and misshapen. Jalen's on the other hand was way more angelic from head to toe. "Yours looks more beautiful than mine," he commented with an innocent smile.

"Cappuccinos?" he asked after Jalen offered to warm up. "That has coffee in it, right? I'm not much of a coffee drinker." Ulrich looked to the ground and quickly remembered the restrictions that were placed on him for his past actions at Hammel. "I'm also not allowed to leave campus."

Jalen let her hand fall to her side as Ulrich rose on his own. Hmm, well if he didn’t want her help that was fine. She pushed her hair behind her ears and toque, hands on hips now as she glanced at their work. “Aw, don’t be so hard on yourself, it’s ok to be a newb,” she smirked then and gave Ulrich a small shove, “but practice makes perfect, it’s beautiful in its own way.”

Not allowed to leave campus? Jalen frowned. Was she getting into something she might regret? But her big heart and willingness to see past people and their faults made her not want to give up on him. “Why?” She asked softly, curious and concerned. Jay suddenly thought of something else and her excitement made her grab the boys arm. “Oh! I have an idea!” She said with a bright toothy smile. “I have some hot chocolate in my dorm room. You like hot chocolate right? Everyone does.” Jalen took his hand and paraded towards the school before he could protest further.

She had never met someone who had been banned from leaving campus. “Since you’re not allowed to leave, let me know if you ever need something off campus.” She said, taking off her hat and mitts as soon as they were inside. It had to be boring, being in this place day in and day out. A puzzled look crossed Jay’s face as she tried to put herself in his shoes. “What do you do for fun?” She asked then, brown eyes falling on no one. She spun around a couple times. Where’d he go? She smirked – were they playing again?

Ulrich smirked at Jalen's attempts at encouragement. Newb is a word he has grown familiar with due to his extensive amount of time he has spent indulged in video games. When he put everything together he realized the was right, he is a newb at making snow angels. She was also right about his creation being beautiful in his own way. "It reminds me of abstract art. I'm the Picasso of snow angels!"

When asked about why he wasn't allowed to leave campus, Ulrich didn't hesitate to answer. Despite the severity of what he did and the danger it put plenty of people inside the school in, he didn't see it as a big deal. Nonchalantly he replied without a single ounce of sorrow or regret, "I tried to sneak a gun into school." The boy voice perked up a bit and actually sounded a bit excited when he mentioned the word gun. It became blatantly obvious that he had a strong liking for them.

"Yeah, yeah, I love hot chocolate for sure!"

As the girl began marching off to her dorm while holding his hand, Ulrich got the bright idea to show her his collection. By the time they reached the girl's dorm and she let him go, Ulrich quietly slipped away to his own dorm. He grabbed a photo album, yes, a photo album of all the guns and knives he owned. Only a couple of minutes passed before he arrived back to Jalen's dorm with a smile on his face.

"Look!" he innocently commanded as he pounced on the nearest bed and opened up the massive photo album to the first page. "These are all my guns and knives. They're all at my house though." He had multiple pictures of each weapon from multiple angles, gloriously showing off all their parts. "And this one," he said while pointing to a picture of a beautiful, silver S&W Magnum revolver, "is my pride and joy. It's the one I tried to sneak into school." Memories of his bullet-filled past with the gun flooded his mind. "I won quite a few competitions with that baby. It's my pride and joy. I would do anything just to hold it again."

Jalen laughed at the comparison. “Alright alright Rick, I gave you a compliment, don’t let it go to your head,” the blonde said with a grin. “You’re still a newb, and believe me, Picasso was no such thing,” she glanced at their imprints in the snow once more. By morning they would be unrecognizable, and for once, it hadn’t been a competition. It had been done in the spirit of fun, something she truly wasn’t used to. Now video games, that would be a totally different story. Being outside in her favourite season made her a little happier, but video games happened at every time of year.

Eyebrows raised, Jalen glanced back at Ulrich. “A gun?” She asked her eyes growing as wide as bowling balls. She gulped, her eyes searching the ground before she asked her next question, “To practice with? Or hurt people?” She inquired. He had been willing to tell her the first part of the situation, why wouldn’t he tell her the rest?

Sitting next to Ulrich on the bed he was on (her roommate’s), Jalen looked at the first picture of the boy holding a gun, and looking quite proud. Either he was crazy, or he just had a very dangerous hobby that had subsequently gotten him into trouble. She showed interested and pointed out a couple things in the picture, even though she knew squat about the subject. “And you’re telling me you can use all those weapons? That’s impressive,” she said, grinning at the boy. She wasn’t being generous, this passion for weaponry made him special and unique and he should be proud of that.

“I’m surprised you even showed me this,” she said, pointing out the obvious. “I mean, aren’t you supposed to be shy?” She asked then, patting his knee. “So what happened to the gun? The silver pride and joy I mean?” She asked, scooting back on the bed and hugging her knees close to her chest, ready for a story. “You have some splainin’ to dooo.”

"I wanted my gun just to have it," he replied wholeheartedly. Ulrich's intentions weren't to hurt anyone with the gun, although that option is was totally out of the question if a dangerous situation appeared. His guns, especially his prized revolver, were treated like his kids. He took good care of them and handled them responsibly (as responsibly as a teenager could be anyway). "I'd probably practice with it too."

Scanning through all the pictures, Ulrich began to feel taken aback by how many weapons he actually owned. He definitely built up a staggering collection before he was enrolled at Hammel. After that, his collecting, and his shooting, came to a screeching halt. "I can shoot every single one of them," he began to say, "and I can shoot them all with groupings that'll make even the most experienced professionals jealous."

It wasn't long before the two reached the section of the photo album containing knives and throwing weapons. "Sweet!" he shouted with joy while pointing to a picture of him and his "father" (who was actually his uncle) standing outdoors in front of a bullseye target. "You see that weird looking knife I'm holding? I won my last competition with that knife before having to come here." The realization of how long its been since his last competition made him feel a little sad. "I miss all my weapons."

Ulrich chose not to comment on the fact that he's shy. It was something he couldn't explain without having to dive deep into his feelings and his past and "stuff like that." Besides, he much rather talk about his baby.

"My parents were called down and they were given my gun. It should be at home in my gun safe now." Ulrich sat up and stretched his arms high into the air as he yawned. "I almost got arrested," he told Jalen with honesty. "Some random kid saw it in my pocket and reported me to a teacher. Then Hammel's security swarmed me like a bunch of angry bees. I told them it's no big deal, but they didn't believe me." He paused for a moment to gauge the girl's reaction. "Long story short, they took it away from me and put a bunch of restrictions on me. I can't leave campus and I can barely use the Internet."

Ulrich interrupted his story abruptly when suddenly started shivering. "So where's that hot chocolate? I'm cold," he asked before continuing on with his story, "oh, and they also make me talk to some therapist guy about my feelings and stuff. They say it's to make sure I'm not endangering myself or anyone else, but I always tell them, 'guns don't kill people, people kill people' and I'm not a killer."

Jalen nodded, “I thought so,” she commented, glad she wasn’t in the midst of a psychopath, “you’re too sweet to be a serial killer.” But yet for some reason she could imagine how bad that would look to someone working at the school. “You probably should’ve gotten permission first, ah well. When’s your probation finished? Are you allowed home for the holidays?” She teased with a cocky smile. Jalen thought she was so witty.

“I have to admit, I’m impressed,” she said. She supposed that everyone had their thing, but this was extremely interesting. “I don’t know the first thing about guns, other than loading them and shooting them, but my aim is, well,” she blushed a little bit then, covering it up with laughter. “I’m not the best shot, as you saw before, but if we’re talking about music or video games, I’m your girl.” She said, realizing she was talking a little much and remedied this by shutting her trap.

She could see how saddened he had become, but he was pretty adorable when he was talking about his weapons, as though they might be in his closet right now. Jay rubbed his back like she would a small sick child and pointed at the picture. “Is that your dad? What kind of competitions was he letting you enter with knives?” She asked, completely interested. Ulrich was definitely one of those people where there was more than met the eye.

Listening intently, Jalen didn’t tear her eyes away from him for a second. One of the many great things about the girl was that she listened as well as she spoke, which was a rarity. She still wasn’t sure why someone would have the bright idea of bringing weapons to school without first getting permission. She also wasn’t sure why his punishment was so severe if he had honestly only wanted to bring it for the sake of bringing it. What was next, banning pencils because they could be used as objects? Jalen was positive she could sneak in a couple of his weapons for him. Possible Christmas present?

Jalen slipped off the bed and grinned, “Jeeze, well aren’t you demanding?” She stepped into the hallway and glanced back at him. “You can come keep me company,” she said rather than asked as she disappeared into her small kitchen. “You dig white, milk, or dark hot chocolate?” She asked, opening up the upper cabinets. As he answered she took down a couple mugs and started the kettle. “I think that’s a little extreme for a guy who didn’t even do anything, everyone has potential to be dangerous,” she said as she manoeuvred around the kitchen. “2% milk okay?”

"Thanks," he said in regards to being too sweet to be a serial killer, "but I don't think they were too worried about me being a serial killer. They were probably thinking more along the lines of a mass murderer." Yes, there is a difference between the two, and the scary part about is that Ulrich understood the difference for a fairly long time, quite a while before he even became a student at Hammel. "You see, a serial killer murders more than three people one at a time at different times. A mass murderer is someone who kills a bunch of people all in one incident, kinda like a school shooter." The way he spoke about murder so fluently and without a single hint of emotion was rather eerie, but subjects of that nature never bothered Ulrich. He always saw it as a fact of life. Creatures kill other creatures, whether it be for food, protection, or malicious intent. It's how the world worked in his mind.

"I'm not sure when my probation will be lifted, but I'm hoping it will be by the end of the school year." The calendar in his room was marked with the day his probation began, but nowhere was it marked with a day where he would be set free so to speak. "I think they're waiting to verify that I wont be doing what I did again in the future before I get unpunished."

When Jalen asked if he was able to go home for the holidays, he nodded with a smile. "Yeah, of course I can! But only if my parents come get me and bring me straight home. And when I get back, I have to get thoroughly searched, head to toe." Ulrich didn't seem to bothered by his restrictions, he was actually excited for the holidays to come. For him the holidays were a short window of time where he could fire off a few rounds and go hunting on his family's property without worrying about anything or anyone else. It's what he lived for.

He had to agree with the girl when she admitted that she was a horrible shot, but at the mention of video games, a competitive streak sprung up in Ulrich's conscious. "You're good at video games?" he asked curiously. "What about first person shooters? I'm unbeatable at those!" Ulrich was just as good at no-scoping a sniper rifle in Call of Duty as he is at doing it in real life. Super dexterity definitely had its perks.

"He's actually my uncle," he said in reference to the picture Jalen pointed at. "I think my parents died. So, my aunt and uncle took me in as a baby and they've basically turned into my mom and dad." He flipped a page and pointed at a child standing next to him who looked to be around the same age, just a little bigger and more physically mature. "That's my cousin, Derek, but I consider him to be my brother basically. He's a student here, too." Ulrich was very close to his family, and didn't take them for granted. After all, he owed them everything for taking him in and introducing him to the wide world of firearms. "And the competitions? We threw a bunch knives at targets from different distances and under different conditions. I beat all the older professional guys there."

Ulrich followed Jalen off into the kitchen as she started conjuring up some delicious hot chocolate. "Do I look like the kind of guy who is picky about what he eats or drinks?" he asked after she began throwing out questions about what kind of milk he wanted. "It may be a little harsh, but oh well. It's something I've got to deal with for the time being."

Jalen grinned, “Well either way, I’m glad you’re not who they say you are.” She had nothing else to offer, since she didn’t know who Ulrich really was. Not yet anyways. He sure did seem to know a lot about different types of murders. “Watch a bit too much news there Rick?” She asked, making reference to the fact that he might just not have anything else to do here at school. Or perhaps he always knew about these things, it would make sense being coupled with his interest in guns and such.

She kept on listening and nodded periodically. “Hopefully,” she said, “at least you can go home for Christmas, it would suck being stuck here while everyone else was away.” And that was all she had to say about that. For Jay, the holidays were always fun. This year, it would be strange. Usually she brought home a boy, or some kind of friend. She wanted to ask JD but she wasn’t sure how to go about doing that without embarrassing herself and him, and crossing the friendship line. She wasn’t sure if he wanted to go there like she did.

“Honey I’m not good at video games, I own at video games,” she said with a proud grin. Yes, she was only a little full of herself. She was also horribly competitive. She stroked her chin in mock thought, “Unbeatable you say?” Jay struck up a smirk, “I bet that you’re not.” She could talk the talk as much as she could walk the walk. Jalen wasn’t sure what she could bet on with Ulrich, but she would think of something if he was game.

Jalen wasn’t sure what to say about his lack of biological parents, so she decided not to say anything at all, looking at the pictures instead. “Well I’m glad there was a silver lining for you,” she said softly, comparing the two boys in the picture. “Yeah, I think I’ve seen him around actually,” she commented, glancing at him momentarily. Yeah, they really could pass as brothers without much effort. “So what’re you gonna do when you’re done school? Open up a gun shop, because that would be wicked.” She said enthusiastically.

“I don’t know, you’re pretty skinny,” she teased in the kitchen. Since he didn’t say what kind of hot chocolate he wanted, she picked out two white hot chocolate packets from the pantry and the caramel sauce. When the water had boiled, Jay mixed the drinks and drizzled the sauce over top. “There we are, almost as good as Starbucks,” she said, handing Ulrich one of the large mugs. “But I promise that as soon as you’re not on probation, I’ll take you out, my treat.” The blonde sipped at her drink and sighed. “The best.”

"Yeah, I watch it when I've got nothing better to do," he replied to Jalen. Ulrich didn't put two and two together about what the girl assumed. He simply saw it as one of those random questions that people ask to get to know each other. "Do you watch the news a lot?"

The more the boy talked to the beautiful girl, the more he began to like her. Even though he didn't make it blatantly obvious, other than telling her she's beautiful earlier, he was growing attached to her at a rapid pace. "Yeah, being stuck here for Christmas would suck. I'd probably go insane. I don't want to miss out on a hunting opportunity." It's rare for Ulrich to grow attached to new people he hasn't known for long. It usually takes him a while just to feel comfortable around people that aren't family.

"Challenge accepted!" Ulrich's face held a competitive grin when Jalen mentioned how she owned at video games. "There's an Xbox 360 in my dorm and we have the new Call of Duty. So maybe when we finish up in here, we can go watch you get destroyed by my superior skills."

When it came to plans on what he would do after leaving Hammel, Ulrich was clueless. He had never thought about it before, but taking his skills and meta human power into consideration, he quickly thought up a few ideas. "I dunno for sure. Maybe an army man or a police officer."

"I'm not skinny!" he sarcastically exclaimed as he lifted up his shirt and inspected his body. "Okay, maybe just a little."

Ulrich took a sip of his hot chocolate and loved it. "This is good," he mentioned, "but I've never had any Starbucks before. Is that the place with the naked green lady on its logo?"

Jalen grinned at the boy’s innocence of not knowing her personality. Soon enough, he would catch on to her humor. “Nope, hate the news, I just figured you wouldn’t have a whole lot to do around here, you seem to know quite a bit about murder and such.” She clarified, followed by a shrug. She didn’t mean to make fun of him, and she wasn’t. She was simply having fun and trying to pull him into that pool of fun. He seemed to be in need of friends anyways.

The girl seemed to have that effect on those around her, particularly of the male variety. They were like flies attracted to something sweet, and she was definitely delectable. “What’s there to hunt in the winter?” She asked curiously. For once she wasn’t trying to be a wiseass, she was genuinely interested in what someone would hunt during the colder months. Maybe some of the bigger game that didn’t disappear like the birds seemed to do. “I’ve gone ice fishing once,” she offered with a smirk. It was boring and probably nothing like hunting. Come to think of it, she would probably like hunting, it seemed right up her alley. But judging by how good she had been with the sling shot, she supposed it would be wise to stay away from guns for the time being.

“Oh ho! You’re on tough guy!” She said, putting that little piece of information into the back of her mind: when in need of a partner or someone’s ass to kick online, ask Ulrich. He could be her video gaming booty call boy. “Don’t feel too ashamed when your ass is beaten by a girl,” she said, eager to get to it already. Most people seriously doubted her skill just by looking at her, but as Ulrich knew very well, looks could be deceiving.

Jalen nodded a couple times, finding the occupation befitting. “At least you have an idea, that’s a good start,” she said, looking back at him while she buzzed around the kitchen. “Was your uncle in the army?” She asked then, trying to connect the dots in Ulrichs life. It was what she enjoyed doing. Talking, getting to know people, and making friends.

“Okay fine! You’re horribly grotesquely obese,” she said with a smirk, eyeing him up and down again as he lifted up his shirt. Jalen laughed, what a horribly awkward, but hilarious thing to do. “No no no no no,” she said, holding up her mug and clinking it against his, “the best.” The blonde went to sit on the couch and watched the boy from afar. “Naked?” She asked then, raising a single eyebrow. “Boy you really don’t get out much do you?” She laughed, grabbing her laptop from the coffee table and searching up an image on Google for him to see. “Look, it’s just her face, see?” She said, flipping it around for him to take a good look at. “Unless you count people without headwear as being naked, perv,” she teased, her feet on the table now as she checked all of her various online accounts. No one was on Steam, which reminded her.

“So you ready to get your ass handed to you Ricky?” She asked, deciding on yet another nick name. “Or did I intimidate you with my amazing hot chocolate?”

"Oh, I see," Ulrich mentioned, "but I didn't learn it from the news. I like that kind of stuff." The German boy had a violent side to his personality that he only let out when pushed over the edge, but it did have a little influence over his personality when it came to what he liked. "And during the winter, you can hunt deer and rabbits and a bunch of other things that aren't hibernating." He moved his arms to look as if he was holding an invisible bow and arrow. "Bow hunting ten or twelve pointers feels amazing! Ice fishing is fun, but hunting is where it's at!"

Ulrich shrugged at mention of his uncle. He wasn't sure what he did before he had to take care of him and Derek. If he was in the military, it would have been before they were born and probably in Germany. "I have no clue. I never really asked or seen a picture of him in the military."

"Thaaanks," he said sarcastically as he poked his stomach, which wasn't too defined but fit at the same time. Once Jalen pulled up a picture of the Starbucks logo, he plopped down beside her and examined it. "Oh, I guess you were right. It is just her face. I must be thinking of something else."

The boy jumped up, finished his hot chocolate, and ran to the door. "Follow me if you want to lose!" Ulrich ventured to his dorm. He opened the door, which someone forgot to lock, and walked straight to the television. The room had the distinct odor of teenage boys, and judging by the clutter, it was obvious four of them slept there on a nightly basis. "Welcome to paradise."

Ulrich booted up the game system and set up two controllers, one for himself and one for Jalen. The game's start screen appeared and Ulrich quickly found a match for them to join. The way he navigated the game's options made it clear he has spent a lot of hours indulging himself in all the pleasures the game had to offer.
