[Continued from the thread Don't Kiss the Girl in the Training Rooms.]
JD gave a mirthless laugh at Jalen's assessment of Hammel's motto. "Yeah, I guess it does kind of eat you." He shook his head then. "No, I don't see my family much at all. Sometimes I go home for Christmas, but I didn't make it last year. It's been over a year since I was last home." He knew this was unusual, but he wasn't about to lie about his familiy life. He didn't see her questions as prying, either. He was mostly just surprised that she was even trying to learn more about him. "I assume you still visit your family like a normal person, right?" he asked her in an attempt to lighten the mood. If she chose not to answer, well, that was entirely up to her. He was just making conversation more than anything.
He had to stop for a moment to consider her next question. "Should I...not be doing this?" he asked slowly. "Someone recently told me to lighten up and be nice. I'm trying to take their advice. You also caught me on a good day. Though I suppose it might always be a good day when you find out that instead of training by yourself in a small room you get to go for a run with someone pretty and intelligent." And yes. He was attempting to butter her up just a bit. He was not completely unskilled at flirting the way some people might believe him to be. "Honestly, though, I'm just kind of glad you haven't ditched me already. I'm not always the nicest guy to be around."
But she wasn't afraid of being seen with him, which was nice. It meant that she didn't want to completely disassociate herself from him and thus didn't see him as a complete jerk. So he turned around again with a smile and waited for Jalen to get settled. Once she pulled out his iPod, he turned his head to look at her again.
"If you'd like, you can be in charge of music. Just make sure I have at least one of the earbuds in, though you might want to take the other. For volume control, at least. And I promise not all my stuff is oldies, despite what the shuffle may seem to suggest." He started to run, the sounds of Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" giving him a nice upbeat tune to race against. He took the short way home again, not wanting to have to go the long way around the path with someone else. Maybe some other time, when he'd built up his endurance and possibly had packed a snack. Right now he was getting hungry.
He headed straight for the cafeteria. He did have to slow down near the outer buildings, since he didn't want to run into anything or anybody. When they reached the courtyard area in front of the cafeteria, he stopped. "Here you go, Jay," he said. "Thank you for the company. Would you care to join me for dinner? I know the most wonderful place, and wouldn't you know, it's not far away, either." He gestured grandly toward the cafeteria. "I hear they have a buffet, as well."
