Thread Roulette: Two Line Painting

For extra credit, Thyme Ersilia, Levi Xu, and Naomi Green all signed up to help paint sets for the school play. Naomi, as the oldest, is in charge of the flat they're assigned.

Rules: Thyme and Levi each have two lines of dialogue they can say. That's it. They can change their inflection, but not what words they say. Naomi can say whatever she needs to get this done.

Thyme can only say "He started it." and "I don't think it's working."

Levi can only say "That's pretty cool." and "Oh. How?"

When Naomi had originally agreed to attend drama class, she hadn't anticipated becoming quite this involved. Furthermore, painting sets hadn't exactly been high on her "what I will do to help" list. Yet there had been extra credit involved, and Naomi certainly didn't see why she couldn't buckle down and help a little bit.

She'd arrived first, dressed in clothes appropriate to painting, complete with her wavy hair pulled back and away from her face. This happened to be a chore where having powers such as hers helped a good deal. A jerk of the hand, and lids were popping off cans. By the time Levi or Thyme arrived, they'd find that a good deal of the setup would be already done.

The first person to enter would be greeted with a level stare, assuming he wasn't late, and a "Hello there, I'm guessing you were assigned to do this too, unless you just wanted the credit," Naomi turned and pointed at the sets. "We'll need to get to painting these, and the sooner we get started, the better."

Mostly because that meant that they'd get to leave that much sooner. Naomi raised her hand, pulling the brushes and beginning work. In the meantime, she kept her eyes on the other two, watching closely to make sure they were following her instructions quite precisely.

Levi wasn't even in the drama class.

But his English teacher was apparently friends with the drama teacher, and since he hadn't done his assigned reading in favor of watching Glee with Evan--to make fun of it, they said, but he was pretty sure Evan was more into it than he let on--the freshman wasn't given much of a choice when he was sent to go help paint sets.

After his last class of the day, he went and threw on his oldest pair of jeans and an old tee-shirt. Levi didn't know exactly what he was supposed to be doing with the painting, because he really wasn't an artist. But he'd get instructions there, right? Right.

When he got to the auditorium, he was quickly assigned to work with Naomi, a girl he didn't know, other than having seen her around a few times. He hadn't even heard he name before, but when he did, he had to stare for a moment. Naomi....was a witch who had gone to Hogwarts.

His sister, Nomi, was a witch who had gone to Hogwarts.

Clearly, Levi was meant to be her friend.

Looking over the flats she indicated, Levi just nodded and said "That's pretty cool." It looked fairly straightforward, and there were only a few cans of paint open. Shouldn't be too hard. He picked up a brush and ran it over his palm, then looked at the two open cans near his feet. Okay, so was this supposed to be a piece of the sky? Or trees? "Oh. How?" Hopefully, Naomi had better instructions.

Extra credit. Usually it meant nothing to Thyme, since his grades hardly ever fell beneath a B, but at Hammel it meant something completely different. Here at Hammel, it meant he was raising his chances of leaving the Institute as soon as possible. Ty was working hard in every aspect needed to graduate, and he would be damned if he let any opportunity fall through the cracks. However, this particular project was going to be difficult, since he knew little to nothing about painting a prop.

The boy wasn’t even involved with the drama department, and he couldn’t recall ever even having enough interest to see the productions. Ty probably had better things to do with his time, but he had already committed and was glad that the people he was working together with were attractive. Who knew? Maybe they had as little experience as he did.

When he arrived, he couldn’t help but notice that all the supplies were already arranged and ready for use. The paint cans were open and the sets were waiting to be turned into amazing landscapes…or close enough. Thyme nodded to the two, a girl named Naomi and a boy named Levi. He had never met them before in his few years at Hammel, but that was all right. They were all here for the extra credit anyways.

Thyme picked up the paint brush, staring at it for a long moment and then to the canvas, deeply contemplating why he chose to do this. Unfortunately, the actors were going to have to act a little better to pretend that this work was anything but a crudely painted set. Without saying a word to the other two, he dipped his brush into one of the open buckets, not caring to see what color it was, and dabbed the wet paint to the white surface. His hand moved stiffly and ungracefully as he worked, and after a few seconds, he stepped back to see what he had done. On the paper was a brown colored object that appeared to be a stick person. Thyme blankly looked back to the two and sighed.

“I don’t think it’s working…”

Naturally they couldn't think for themselves. In fact, neither boy sounded particularly bright, almost as if someone had assigned them a limited number of words that they were allowed to use. No matter; Naomi could deal with stupid people. She certainly had before.

She pointed at various sections, issuing orders. They were supposed to paint a section that would serve as a field in "Oz", since apparently the school was doing Wicked (because Fate said so; because Wicked is awesome). While she was doing that, she began to realize just how much of a job this was going to be.

"That's because you're not following orders," she said. What was his name anyway? For that matter, what was the other guy's name? No matter; Naomi didn't need to know names in order to issue orders. "You're supposed to be painting landscape, as in a backdrop. You do know what that is, right? It's what's behind people when they're acting in a play."

Because most Americans likely didn't even know what a play was. Though Naomi had to admit that neither of these two looked quite as American as some of the others she'd run into. She wasn't exactly holding her breath though.

"Alright, now get to work. We haven't got all day," she ordered again. Once more her hand raised, and once more she started painting scenery, counting on the two dunderheads to manage the simple task she'd set before them.

Levi knelt down next to the flat and listened to Naomi rant. She was incredibly bossy. Even more than his older sister, and that was an accomplishment. But whatever, he could deal with this for another few hours, get his extra credit, then go hang out with Sam. "That's pretty cool."

He assumed that one end of the flat was the top, so he picked up the can of light blue paint and stirred it a little with his brush. Levi glanced up at Naomi, then started painting. If he was doing it wrong, he was pretty sure she'd tell him.

Once he got a large patch of the flat covered, he had to stretch to reach the far corner. Levi wasn't tall; he had always been one of the shortest kids in his class, and even repeating freshman year hadn't changed that. So when he stretched out to reach, he really had to stretch. And that meant that he really wasn't watching his leg, which nudged the can of brown paint, enough to knock it over.

Right onto Thyme's shoes. Levi swallowed, then looked up at the older boy.

Thyme narrowed his eyes a bit at the bossy girl who criticized his creation. Sure it was terribly done and well…brown, she didn’t need to be so rude about it. Was it really that important that this was done well? He tried to ignore her words and continue, but he knew little to nothing about what kind of landscape they were supposed to be painting. Thyme had never really heard the story of Wicked, so he decided to just quietly follow orders like he was told to, much to his discomfort.

The boy grunted before dipping his brush into a different color, green this time, and his brush strokes were once again unrefined. The green was smeared all over the canvas into a large blob like object over the stick figure. Thyme thought it was going well until he heard the sound of something being kicked over, and he cringed, knowing that something terrible had occurred from whatever accident happened. Blue-green eyes glanced down to his feet, and he stared in horror at the giant mess of brown paint that now stained his shoes and the lower part of his pants.

The boy tried his best to stay calm and not lower the seal on his powers, but it was clearly evident to anyone nearby that his eye was twitching out of the anger engulfing him. Thyme, unable to think quite clearly at that moment, grabbed his brush, dipped it into what remained of the brown paint, and whipped the loose paint off and onto Levi’s own shoes. An eye for an eye, right? If he was walking out of here with ruined clothes, so would he. Thyme smirked before returning back to his green blob.

At first, Naomi thought they might actually be making progress. The little Asian boy, while obviously not thrilled to be receiving orders, was working fairly diligently. The other boy could at least paint, and Naomi figured she could always instruct him to painting larger areas. Surely he couldn't mess something like that up.

Then Levi knocked over paint. Sighing, Naomi turned to watch the chaos that was unfolding. Paint onto Thyme's shoes, and then Thyme throwing paint back at Levi. Clearly they were all very mature here. The paint got dangerously close to Naomi, and if she hadn't turned at the sound of the paint can tipping over, it likely would have nailed her directly. In fact, she just barely managed not to press against the freshly painted scene.

Clearly, this was not something to be pleased with.

"Would you two stop it?" snapped Naomi. She used her own power to tug at the paintbrushes, yanking them from hands. This made paint splatter, and that time, Naomi couldn't quite avoid it, as it landed upon her outstretched arm. Deep breath, keep cool. Her voice turned icy: "You're harming the project more than you're helping. Go get cleaned up."

A pause, while she looked around. "And does either of you have a power that could actually be useful in cleaning up this paint? Otherwise we'll have to look for a remover somewhere."

Naomi was already trying to wipe the paint off her arm, nearly grimacing as she noticed the flecks of paint.

Spilling the paint had been an accident, wasn't that obvious? He grinned weakly at Thyme and shrugged, but obviously that wasn't enough of an apology for the blond boy, as evidenced by the paint he flung onto his shoes. "That's pretty cool," Levi said, his voice dripping with as much sarcasm as he could manage. It was an accident! There was no need for revenge.

On Thyme's part, that is. The freshman dipped his brush in the spilled paint and flicked it right back at him. After all, Levi only had one pair of sneakers. He'd outgrown his other pair of shoes and had been waiting until there were a bunch of sales in December before buying a new pair. Looked like that shopping trip was moving up, then.

It was probably for the best that Naomi yanked the brushes from their hands. "Oh!....How?" He looked perplexed for a moment, looking up at the witch, and wondering how she'd managed that. It was probably a summoning spell, but she had to be really good at them to summon two brushes without speaking right?

Levi got up when Naomi told them to get cleaned up. Other than his shoes, Levi had managed to avoid the paint, and he didn't see any paper towels around there anywhere. "Oh...how?"

Thyme smirked a bit at Naomi’s annoyance. Surely, the petty quarrel between the two of them had been highly disrupting to her plans. Once again asserting her need for contro, the girl yanked the brushes from their hands as if they were completely incompetent, even though her powers nearly backfired on her and splattered paint on her arm. Thyme snickered. It seemed none of them were safe from the mess now, but he was most certainly not going to take any of the blame for this.

“He started it”

Assuming there would be another paint spill at some point, Thyme shrugged and removed his shirt, tossing it to the side where he hoped it would be safe. He also kicked off his paint covered shoes before he dipped his brush back into the green and continued his work. The sooner he got this over with, the faster he could get out with his extra credit. When asked if they had powers that could help, Thyme shook his head. If he let loose around here, the whole room would probably be destroyed…although the paint spill would technically be the least of their problems then.

"You two are like children," muttered Naomi. She kept looking down, recalling her own near misses and the bits of paint that were on her clothes. She understood that they were strapped for volunteers for this kind of thing, but you'd think that someone who managed to reach their teenage years would know how to behave.

Then again, they were American.

"Use the towels, there," said Naomi, pointing to the paper towels. "Or head into the loo. It should be about here somewhere."

She started turning, looking about. Now that Levi and Thyme weren't actively at one another's throats, Naomi knew she could lower the brushes back down, giving her back a little more concentration. This she channeled into locating the loo. Naomi extended a finger toward that direction, turning to address the two, when she realized that Thyme was removing his shirt.

"What is wrong with you?" she asked. Sighing, she lowered the arm and rolled her eyes. "Put your shirt back on. This isn't that kind of painting."

Could she do it herself? It seemed like it might be less of a headache...

The freshman rolled his eyes at Naomi's comment. He'd been called childish before, and immature more often. The insult wasn't new, but it was still irritating. "Oh how?" Levi mumbled under his breath and debated flicking more paint off of his brush at the witch. Whenever she gave it back.

As soon as she released her telekinetic or whatever hold on the brush, he grabbed his and went back to work. The sooner they got this over with, the better. He gave a sidelong glance at the other boy as he took off his shirt. "That's pretty cool." No, he wasn't leering. Not really. He didn't know much about Thyme, but his power told him that the blond boy was a gay theatre kid.

And as he was painting a background for a play, that seemed to fit.

Levi didn't really care if Thyme wanted to take his shirt off. He wasn't staring, as he had his own boyfriend to flirt with. But when it so obviously annoyed Naomi that the blond boy had taken his off, the younger one just had to follow suit. At least Naomi was getting some (skinny, underage) eye candy today.
