Things Have Changed (OPEN)

Emily walked through the halls trying to find her way to the main office. This was her first day at the school, and she was tired already. She had taken a plane from New York City to here. The trip hadn't been very long, but Emily had a lot of things on her mind. She found out she was able to hypnotize people with her voice, and that scared her to death. She wasn't able to tell when her power was in effect or not until it had affected the person, and because of that she had stopped talking.

She missed talking, and singing so much it was driving her crazy. She had started talking to herself when she was on her own just to remember what her own voice sounded like. Emily had accidentally used her powers in public, and the next thing she knew she was being shipped off to Hammel. She didn't like it at all. She wanted to be home with her father, and she wanted not to worry if she was manipulating others or not. When she finally found the office she noticed there were a few other students there. She took a seat, and waited for her turn.

Dante opened his eyes silently when he heard another person entering the room. He was hoping it would be a teacher or other official so he could get out of here already. He still hadn't received his schedule, even though he'd had enough time to get everything in his dorm unpacked and settled. He'd been waiting here for what seemed like forever now.

He glanced over to the girl who had just entered and was sitting down. Dante noticed how tired she looked and knew he could relate. Why else would he have been half asleep a moment before? He shifted in his seat and sat up straighter.

After a few moments of silence and contemplation he turned towards the girl who had just entered. “I'm guessing you're new here?" he asked her, putting on a small smile. He had a feeling he wasn't getting out here any time soon and he guessed occupying himself with a conversation was the best way to go. short of leaving and coming back when it was slightly less busy. "My name's Dante. I'm new here too."

Emily turned her head when she heard someone speak to her. It was a boy who looked about as tired as she was. When she had come in she had noticed he had been asleep. She started to feel bad, because she feared she woke him. When he smiled and started to speak to her she relaxed a little. It was doubtful you'd speak to someone if you were upset that they woke you. When he said he was a new student she smiled brightly after sighing in relief. She was used to talking to others, but was a little afraid that she'd be out of place with people that likely knew each other for a long time.

She put up a right hand index finger so that he knew she wasn't ignoring him. She dug through her purse, and pulled out a dry eraser board and a marker. She wrote, Yes I'm new here. My name is Emily Evans, and it's nice to meet you Dante. She turned to show him what was written, and just hoped he didn't make any jokes. She hated writing on the dry board in the first place, but she didn't want to chance using her powers by accident.

Dante watched as she rose her index finger and smiled reassuringly at her. His eyebrow rose slightly as she took out a dry erase board and started to write. Some part of his brain was ready to crack a joke but he forced that part to shut up, nevertheless filing away the joke in case he ever needed to use it.

She turned to show him her writing and he read it quickly. "It's wonderful to meet you Emily," he said. He was about to speak again but he paused when he realized the words he was about to say would have been very hurtful indeed. He thought for a few moments before speaking up again. "So, just curious here and you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but what's up with the board?" he finally asked.

AJ was bored. Well, actually he was in the process of becoming un-bored. He was sneaking around the building trying to work on his spy skills. Of which he had zero. It wasn’t the spying part that he had trouble with. Over the years, he’d gotten pretty good at sitting on the edge of life and watching everyone else. It was the being sneaky that he lacked. He wasn’t so much of a klutz that he constantly hurt himself of broke things, but he still managed to make a lot of noise.

As he came around the corner into the office, humming what he hoped was the 007 theme to himself, he knocked into a side table, and sent a few books flying off it. He managed to catch most of them before they fell to the floor, but it still made a lot of noise. Picking up one of the books, he looked up to see a girl and a boy sitting in the office. He smiled, and shrugged at his clumsy-ness before plopping down on a seat across the room from them. He noticed the girl was holding a small dry erase border and tried to see what it had written on it, but couldn’t make it out. That’s an odd way to carry around a To Do list, he thought to himself.

“You guys must be new here, right?” AJ asked, when he realized he didn’t recognize the other kids. Although, he wasn’t the most popular student and had a knack for asking that question to students who had been here for years, so even he knew it was possible that they weren’t new.

Emily smiled when he didn't make a joke about the dry erase board. She wasn't surprised when he asked about it. She was used to that by now, and as long as people asked about it politely she didn't mind answering their questions. In fact it usually made thing easier one her in the long run. My ability is vocal hypnotism. I haven't exactly learned how to control it yet. In fact I can't even tell when I'm using my ability until I've influenced someone. So until I learn how to control it this board is my best way of communicating with others, she wrote before showing Dante the board.

Shortly after she had showed Dante the board another boy came up and asked if they were new. She nodded her head yes while smiling. She didn't want to erase the board yet in case Dante hadn't finished reading it. That was one of the few problems with using the board. Different people read at different paces, and she usually wanted to erase too quickly.

Dante began reading the moment Emily turned the board back. He was just about to reply when he heard somebody else speaking. He turned to face the new arrival and offered him a gentle smile before turning back to Emily.

I can understand some of your pain. I have the ability to absorb information. Can't control it yet, and I can't even turn it off. Horrible headaches I can tell you that.

Dante turned his attention back to the kid and smiled once more. Yeah, brand new. Are you new too? I've been hanging around the grounds a couple days but I haven't seen you before. My name's Dante by the way. Dante said.

AJ smiled back at the two students. He remembered when he first arrived at Hammel and felt completely lost. Of course, he still felt like that. But at least he knew his way around the building now. “Nah,” he said, a little proud of himself for being the old kid on the block. “I’ve been here a while. Just wonderin’ around. Ya know?” He jumped up and walked across the room to sit beside the boy.

“I get headaches too sometimes. They suck,” he said, leaning over to read what was written on the girl’s board. “Oh. I get it. That’s cool.”

He started fiddling around in his pockets and pulled out a quarter, which he started spinning on the side table. “My name’s AJ,” he said suddenly before going back to spinning his quarter.

Emily sighed when another person went into the office. As much as she liked meeting new people she was tired, and wanted to take a nice long nap. That sounded so good right now that she couldn't help but yawn. She was lucky, and caught herself in time to cover her mouth. She nodded understandingly when Dante and Aaron told her about how their powers caused them to have headaches sometimes. When she used her power for long length of time it caused her throat to hurt sometimes. Thankfully that had only happened once.

AJ seemed to be fairly bored as he kept spinning a quarter. Maybe that was a habit of his. When he introduced himself she earsed the board and wrote, I'm Emily nice to meet you. She had that it was a little rude that the boy had just read the board without asking, but it wasn't important enough to make a big deal of it.
