Alex was a little lost. It was his own fault, really. He had brushed off his family’s offer of introducing him at the office and helping him move his stuff in to the dorm. He had spent several hours in the car hearing his brothers tell stories of how great school was and give him loads of advice he would never remember. Alex didn’t want to live in his brothers’ shadows. It had been a little while since they were in school, but he was worried teachers would recognize the resemblance anyway and just call him Dave’s brother or Marco’s brother. He loved them, really, but he wanted to find his own way.

It couldn’t be that hard to find the main office office. Or a map or something. Or at least, that was the theory. It wasn’t working out so well in practice. Unfortunately, his family was kind enough to respect his wishes and had dropped him off on campus. Alex hadn’t really thought to ask for a map or where he was supposed to go first. Come to think of it, he couldn’t even remember what dorm he had been assigned to so he could drop off his suitcases. Why had he needed this much stuff, anyway?

Alex sighed and ran a hand through his hair. This was not a great way to start off a new year. He found himself near a campus building. He was extremely glad- hopefully it would have some helpful staff or students who could point him in the right direction.

“Hi” He greeted whoever was inside and smiled sheepishly. “I’m a new student and I… have no idea what I’m doing. Can you help me?”

Why is there never anyone in here? AJ asked himself as he looked around for a bell or a buzzer. He had barely survived through one of Mr. Creepy Drill Sergeant’s gym classes and he was going to try his best to get the class removed from his schedule. He was even prepared to offer taking anything, heck two of anything, just to avoid it.

“Hello?” he called out. “Anyone home?” Normally he would have given up and went outside to mess around. Or maybe sneak Trouble out for a walk, but that teacher really scared him.

Speaking of being scared, AJ was a little lost in his thoughts when he heard a voice behind him. He jumped up out of his chair, knocking it over in the process. He half expected Danicca, or maybe the creepy janitor, to be about to attack him. Instead there was a boy he’d never seen before. Not that he knew everyone at Hammel.

“Hiya,” AJ said, setting his chair back up and bouncing over to the boy with his arm outstretched. “Welcome to Hammel.” He flashed him a grin. “Uh..depends on what kinda help you need.”

Alex breathed a sigh of relief that there was someone in the office. It had seemed empty at first and then he would be back at square one. The other boy seemed a little nervous about something. It seemed like Alex had startled him so badly he had knocked over the chair he had been sitting in.

Alex dropped a suitcase to the floor so he could free a hand to shake AJ's. "Sorry for startling you. I'm Alex- I literally just got here, so I'm trying to find a class schedule or my dorm or something. Really, I'll take any kind of help at this point."

His backpack was getting kind of heavy, so he took it off and dropped it to the floor next to his suitcase and stretched out his shoulders. "Hopefully the dorm isn't too far away." Alex eyed the boy hopefully, "You're not super strong, are you?"

“No worries,” AJ said, grinning at Alex as he continued excitedly shaking the boy’s hand. “I’m AJ.” He looked down at Alex’s suitcase, wishing he had telekinesis or something similar. He would probably offer to carry it anyway. But that didn’t mean he didn’t wish it would be easier.

“You in the co-eds or all boys?” AJ asked, realizing he was still shaking Alex’s hand. He let it go suddenly with a bit of a sheepish look. “Oh sorry.” He gave a look over his shoulder, hoping one of the staff had suddenly appeared to help him and Alex out. “No super strength here. Sorry.”

“Well,” AJ said reaching toward the suitcase. “Since no one’s here to help me, guess I might as well help you.” He paused with his hand on the handle. “Wait! Are you super strong? Cuz that’d be kinda helpful right about now.”

"Nice to meet you, AJ." Alex greeted the other boy as AJ continued excitedly shaking his hand. It was a little longer than social norms might have dictated, but Alex didn't really mind. He was glad to have someone who seemed extremely happy to meet him. He hoped he would get a similar welcome from the rest of the students.

"Probably the co-eds. Unless there's a boy named Danielle..." Alex couldn't remember the name or number of the dorm, but he did remember the name of his dormmates. Or were they roommates? He hadn't heard of a high school that had girls and boys in the same room, but it would be pretty exciting if it did. Especially if she's cute...

"That's too bad. Too much to hope for, I suppose." It would have been incredibly convenient if AJ did have super-strength, but that was just one power among many. What would be the odds of meeting someone like that here?

"I won't be much help either, unfortunately.." Alex told AJ. He was fairly confident that there weren't any inanimate objects that were strong. He couldn't imagine describing anything other than people or animals that way, and he couldn't absorb properties from them.

AJ was always excited to meet new students. Even if he couldn’t remember all their names. Or forgot who had what power. Or never bothered to learn who was dating who. It was still exciting to have a fresh face around the grounds.

“I’m pretty sure there aren’t any boys named Danielle, but ya never know I guess,” he attempted to lift the suitcase and almost fell over. He grinned and rubbed his hands together before trying again. “Guess we should…head that…way,” he said, grunting slightly. AJ was defiantly not what one would call a “buff guy”. But he tried to be helpful.

“There’s a few super-strong types around here,” he said starting to drag carry the suitcase down the hall and towards the co-ed dorm. “Can’t really remember who they are right now, though.” He paused for a break as they exited the main building. Letting the suitcase fall to the ground, he turned to Alex with a worried look. “Opps. There’s not a lot of breakable stuff in there, right?”

((I am SO sorry for the extreme slow. I had lots of out of town guests and then had to grade a ton of horrible papers for the class I'm TAing. I swear it won't happen again!!))

Alex followed AJ, taking in the sights as he followed him towards the dorms. He heard AJ drop the suitcase and only the realized that AJ wasn't quite as strong as he was and had taken the heaviest one to carry. Alex smiled and took the suitcase from him. That one was pretty heavy. "Let me grab this one. It wouldn't be fair to leave you with the heaviest suitcase since you're already doing me a favor." He handed him the backpack, which was considerably lighter, hoping it wasn't too heavy for AJ.

He shook the suitcase as he took it from the other boy, "Doesn't sound like there's anything breakable in there. I can't really remember what I packed, honestly. I just tossed stuff in there last minute, so I guess we'll see later."

AJ smiled at Alex as the boy trades loads with him. He pushed some hair out his eyes after swinging the backpack. “Thanks,” he said, smiling. “I’m not what most people would call “buff”. Or at least that’s what I’m told.”

“Well, I think you’d remember if you packed a lamp or a glass vase or something,” AJ offered. He tried to remember the things he’d attempted to pack when he left for Hammel. Most of the items (such as his machete) were vetoed by his mother. “So since you’re new and all, does that mean you just found out.” AJ asked. “About you being a meta and all?”

AJ looked relieved that he had switched suitcases with him. “No worries. Strength isn’t everything.”

Alex laughed. “I guess that’s true. No lamps or vases in there luckily!” He was pretty confident he had packed his computer in his backpack. That was the only thing he could think of that might be breakable.

“Yeah, just this summer. It was probably different than most people’s experiences though. My two older brothers are metas too and my parents are really cool with it, so it was more of a relief when I developed powers than anything. I was beginning to get worried I was the odd one out. How long have you known for?”

“Yeah,” AJ said with a shrug. “I guess not, but it’d sure come in handy.” Super strength was defiantly on the list of powers AJ wished he had gotten. He smiled, picturing himself tossing someone in the air or swinging a car around in the air.

“Yeah being the odd one out would just be…odd,” AJ said. Although he was usually the odd one out in most things, he never really seemed to notice. As far as his parents were concerned, AJ was the odd one out of everything they had hoped he would be. “Oh um…a while?” AJ tried to figure out how long it had been since that day at the mall when his powers manifested. It seemed like forever ago, but he didn’t think it could have been more than a year or two. “I’m not really good at judging time, but I guess it’s been a bit cuz I can use my power without blowing something…or someone apart. Which is good. Cuz it’s no fun taking someone to the infirmary. Especially when you don’t have a driver’s license.” AJ smiled at Alex, not realizing there was a good chance he might be causing some apprehension. “So what can you do? Fly? Shoot laser beams from your eyes? Talk to butterflies?”
