The sound of human heartbeats accosted his ears. Every single one a different rhythm, all going at the same time. It was enough to drive anyone insane, and twice as much needed to irritate the man who could hear it all in perfect clarity. He grumbled a few words to the people around him as he got his coffee, sugar and all, and went to the infirmity. He had some paperwork to do for someone, and some research work to go over. Theo just wanted to get his day started.
His office was rather quiet, a relief from all the sounds he was hearing around him. The coffee smelled excellent, and for that he was grateful. It might even make a difference in the amount of snarking he did at the people around him. Theo left his office door open so he could hear if anyone came into the infirmity, and went to work on his computer. He had been doing some work on meta-human genetics, trying to see what made each power so different.
The sound of the keys grew annoying after a few minutes, and he leaned back. Thin fingers wrapped around the coffee and he sighed, closing his eyes and listening to the silence. At that moment the sound of the door opening reached his ears, as well as the background noise coming in from the hall. The door shut, and he stood. Theo walked the small distance across his office, thin form stopping in the doorway. He leaned against the frame and looked around, waiting for someone to turn the corner from the short hall and come into view. He could hear a set of steps he didn't recognize, and a heartbeat that was slightly fast. Most likely the first cases of winter colds. And so the day really begins.....
