Time Warp: The Rebel Years (Ethan)

Senior year and boy was she glad it was over! This was the summer before she went off to do whatever she wanted. The time to party and have fun, not that she hadn't been doing that before, but now...it was better. Ceri was excited, she was the next McKay to graduate. She wasn't graduating from Hammel like Jaythen and Linden had, but still, graduation was graduation. It was an accomplishment.

What was a girl to do after such an accomplishment?

Celebrate of course. She wasn't celebrating with her family tonight though. They had the date set for her graduation party and tonight was her night to go out with a group of friends. Her best friend that had been through her whole high school experience, Ethan White, would pick her up any minute at her house and they were going to the club to dance and party. She'd had a crush on Ethan for a couple years, ever since he started to fill out and get taller, she was a goner. It helped that he was incredibly sweet and hilarious, too.

Ceri was excited to go out. It would be different without having Linden there to make sure she didn't go overboard, but she trusted Ethan to take on that roll. After all, how bad could she get? If she drank it wouldn't be her first time, she wasn't a total lightweight. Sitting outside on the steps of her house in her strapless black dress, Ceri fidgetted trying to calm her nerves and suppress the sudden urge to organize things.

Ethan pretty much shares the same sentiment as Ceri regarding their senior year. It was a little too hectic than he expected it to be, and it’s not just because of a number of extracurriculars he decided to take on for the year (student council, grad committee and being captain of the hockey team, to name a few). There’s the fact that Brea manifested too – making him the only one in the family without a power – and that he’s been dumped twice within the same year. Thrice actually, if you count the fling he had with his uncle’s neighbor’s son’s babysitter when he stayed there the summer before senior year.

In any case, all that was behind them now (all that remains is the actual march itself, which shouldn’t be that difficult), so he figured it’s time to let loose a bit.

“Hey Ceri! Sorry I was late,” said Ethan as he drove by the McKays, spotting his classmate sitting on their front steps, “Were you waiting for a long time? I didn’t mean to. Got caught up with a few chores, not to mention sneaking behind a mother who can be in five places at once isn’t entirely a walk in the park.” Sure he’s done that a dozen times before, but for some reason, he felt like she’s onto him. Why else would he make him do the laundry, fold them afterwards and even wash the dishes all in one night? “Bill said they’ll meet us at the parking lot outside the club. He still has my ID; his cousin borrowed it for the weekend.” He opened his car door and gave it a few pats. “Anyway let’s go. You look nice by the way. Pretty sure people will be all over you when we get there.”

Once Ethan pulled up to her house, Ceri hopped up and waved excitedly at him. “Ethan! Hey, oh don’t worry about it. I’m used to you showing up late anyway,” She stuck her tongue out at him and giggled. Shaking her head at his long list of reasons he was not there on time, she put her hands up, “Ethan seriously, stop or you’re going to have a premature heart attack!” In order to hopefully help keep his ranting about his mother and whatnot to a minimum, she leaped at him and gave him a hug.

As he gave her the download of what would be going on when they got there she stepped back and walked to her side of the car, “Tsk tsk, letting someone borrow an ID without having a back up. Having two older brothers comes in handy. They made me multiples. I don’t know how, but hey, my brother is a techno path.” She smiled wider when he complimented her and waved her hand dismissively. “Unlikely, not when there will be so many other gyrating women, grinding against complete strangers. I’m just not like that,” And boy was that true. If she was like that…Linden would have her locked away in a tower and instead of a dragon guarding it…he would.

“Let’s do this!” Ceri whooped and hollered as she got in the car. This night would be one to remember. Or at least…she hoped she remembered it.

“Say what? Ceri, I am offended. Very offended.” Despite the scowl on his face and the way he’s crossed his arms, the chuckle that followed soon after should very well say that he’s totally not taking Ceri’s little scolding seriously. He knew himself that time management was an area in his life that he should be giving more of an effort of. This wasn’t the first time he was late for something, and he’s fairly sure it won’t be his last. (At the moment anyway). But at least he’s cut his previous record (half an hour) in half.

The hug was quite unexpected, but definitely not unwelcome. He even hugged her back before telling her to buckle herself in and revving up his car. “Well apologies for not being well prepared,” he said at her reprimanding, “It’s different being the eldest you know. I don’t have anyone to ask about these things.” Which is why the boy tries his best to befriend anyone and everyone. How else would have known who to ask for the said IDs or what a condom is for? He’s pretty sure his life would’ve been different had he been blessed with at least one older sibling (a brother, preferably).

It didn’t take long for them to reach the said parking lot and see the small group of teenagers gathered round. “Hey Billie, do you have my ID?” was the first thing Ethan said as they approached, before giving everyone around a bro-hug. ID tucked safely in his pocket, he grabbed two guys – Mark and Oliver – and yelled, “We’ll be right back. We’re just grabbing ourselves some drinks since it’ll be expensive in there. Anything particular you’d want?”

Ceri giggled and rolled her eyes. She knew that he was simply incapable of really staying mad at her, or anyone for that matter. He was too nice to be angry with anybody. In all the years she’s known him, she’s never really seen him mad, so the scolding didn’t worry her in the slightest. Especially when he laughed afterwards. They both knew he had a knack for being fashionably late, and it never bothered her because his punctuality had improved by quite a bit.

When he hugged her back she smiled wide, she wasn’t an affectionate person, but she’d known Ethan long enough to be comfortable hugging him. Fastening her seatbelt she smirked. “I’d suggest asking my brothers, but they might not give you the right advice not because they’re mean or anything, but because they enjoy pulling pranks. If you ever do need advice or anything, I could always ask my brothers for you…unless it’s like a sex question, ‘cause they’d freak if I asked them about that stuff.” She shuddered at the very thought of the ‘sex talk’ with Linden or Jaythen. Linden would freak more because it was her, Jaythen just wouldn’t know what to say. Talk about awkward.

Upon arriving at the club, she saw the group of teenagers all huddled together. Nerves set in and Ceri found herself fidgeting. It wasn’t that she didn’t know the group, of course she did otherwise she wouldn’t be out with them, it was just that she wasn’t close with any of them. Not like Ethan. He was far more social than she was, but she was willing to try. Once Ethan began walking away, she chewed on her lower lip and tried to at least appear like she would be fine. “Mike’s hard lemonade for me please,” She said back to him. It wasn’t all that much to get her wasted, but they were decent tasting, unlike beer that made her gag. Hurry back she thought to herself as she was left with the other teens that she would have to socialize with. They were all talking amongst themselves, and she felt sorely out of place again. It was just like they were back in high school. She was a rebel type, but wasn't noticed by many.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” laughed Ethan, shaking his head as he imagined what might’ve happened should he ask one of her brothers about stuff like that. He’s fairly sure her brothers knew him since he’s picked Ceri up from their house numerous times before, and though he’s tried his hardest to assure them that he and Ceri were just friends and nothing more, he’s still a guy and they’re still her older brothers. Things are bound to get just a tad bit ugly (which is both a good and a bad thing, I think).

Somehow Ethan regrets asking what the people in their group would want in such an off-handed way, as they just started spewing names and brands out simultaneously. “Ok guys, guys chill,” he said, shaking his head and putting his arms out as if to stop them from speaking, “Let’s do this again. One at a time, and please don’t change your drink five times in a row. Julius, I’m looking at you.” He pointed his finger at the blonde guy and a loud laughter ensued. He told Mark to grab his phone and type everything out, then started asking people again about the drinks they’d want. “Mike’s Hard Lemonade for Ceri,” he said with a wink as he repeated Ceri’s order. “Ok is that everything? Going once, twice, gone.”

Before leaving though, he grabbed Ceri and dragged her closer to the rest of the group. He knew for a fact that she wasn’t as comfortable around them as she was with him, but as much as he’d want to assign the whole drink-buying to someone else, he just couldn’t. “Jade, Kayla, you know Ceri right?” he said with a smile, “Take care of her while we’re gone ok. We’ll be back quick.” He gave them an ok sign before whispering to Ceri, “Don’t worry, they don’t bite. If they do, just tell me when I get back, k?”

The trio didn’t return until about an hour later, each of them carrying at least three bags of liquor in hand. “Before you say anything else, it was all Oliver’s fault,” Ethan grinned as he placed the bags at the back of Harriet’s pick-up truck. “Dude forgot where he put his ID so we had to do the walk of shame and go find someplace else to buy these,” added Mark, which made some of the people in the group (playfully) deride Oliver. “We had to walk two more blocks out. But he was sorry so he bought two extra six-packs for all of us.”

“Ok guys, pay up pay up,” yelled Oliver as he started handing out the stuff. “Don’t worry ‘bout yours Ceri. I got you covered,” Ethan assured her as he handed her a drink. “After all, I was late right? Kayla and Jade treat you alright?”

Ethan walked next to Ceri and had just opened his can, ready to take a sip, when Bill came by and asked, “What happened to your shoes White? Since when did mismatched shoes became fashionable?” This made the boy go at least fifty shades of red, almost spitting out his drink as he did. In fact, not only was his shoes not matching, but his shirt’s also not buttoned nor tucked in properly. Mark and Oliver had the same shoe situation, the latter even having his t-shirt on inside out. And don’t get me started on the odd stain(s) on Mark’s shorts (which were quite visible despite the low light of the parking lot).

Not really knowing how to answer Bill (he looked at the two other guys for help but they too were as bug-eyed blushing as he was), he decided to simply ignore his question and yell to the group, “Hey guys, think we should start going in now? We can always put these in Harriet’s car for the time being.”

Hopefully that’ll be enough to distract the rest of the guys. Hopefully.

Ceri knew for a fact that her brothers were a little suspicious of her friendship with Ethan. They both claimed that girls and guys just weren’t ‘friends’ without a little something on the side. She knew she wasn’t Ethan’s type though, he’d never look at her like that. As many times as she told them that, they still didn’t particularly like how much he hung around with her. They were ridiculous in her opinion. It was probably for the best that they had been out when Ethan showed up, otherwise they might have come out and put on their ‘big brother’ness. Talk about embarrassing.

As everyone started blurting everything out at once, Ceri rubbed at her arms and avoided much eye contact with any of them. The boys were all laughing loud and the other girls seemed to be hanging on at least one of them. She was the awkward one, standing off to the side as usual. Of course she could have fun, but it was difficult when she was out with this group because most of them made her uncomfortable. He repeated her order and she smiled slightly at him before it disappeared and she looked away, a few pairs of eyes on her.

Ceri had to admit that she was not particularly thrilled that Ethan was one of the ones leaving. She didn’t understand why the others were capable of going without him. He walked over to her and started pulling her towards the others, all the while she tried not to struggle. Nudging her closer to Jade and Kayla, two of the girls that she’d known since grade school (and hadn’t really spoken to since then), Ceri kept her eyes on Ethan. Her expression was one of fear and uneasiness. Why was he leaving her with these two? The girls looked at her when he told them to take care of her and she thought she saw the one smirk. This was such a bad idea. They may not bite, but they weren’t going to play nice, of that she was sure. “Hurry,” She whispered back to him.

After they left, the two girls just stared at her, mumbling about her appearance and questioning why Ethan even hung out with her. In all honesty, she didn’t understand why either, but she didn’t question it. After a while (too long), the boys returned and she had to keep herself in place as to not run at Ethan begging for him to just take her home where she was wanted. She took her drink, her body language more or less screaming that she had not been treated alright at all. “Yes, they treated me fine,” Her voice said against what she was really thinking.

Bill’s question had Ceri’s eyes narrowed at her best friend and she couldn’t help but smile slightly. The boys were all a little ruffled and disheveled, and she knew exactly where this conversation was going. Giggling silently she shook her head at him when he attempted to change the subject. It was almost a smooth attempt, but she expected at least one of the others to call him out on it. After all, that’s what they always did.
