The Basics
Name:
Jared Park (Park Bae Young)
Nicknames:
Bae Young with his grandparents and occasionally with his parents, Jared with other people.
Age:
Fifteen (15) years old
Orientation:
Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job:
Student
Powers:
Undetectable by Machines. Red’s cells emit a strange bio-electric signature that makes him more or less invisible to machines, more specifically to things that are digital of sorts. His appearance, his voice, even his height and weight are unreadable by such technological marvels. From digital cameras and camcorders to CCTVs and laptops, he’s virtually unreadable.
While most powers have their ‘default setting’ as off, Red’s ability’s default configuration is on. Much like super strength or enhanced perception, his body functions as if being invisible to machines is normal. As such, it takes conscious effort and much strain in Red’s body to ‘be visible’. Side effects (of trying to be seen by machines) include severe headache and fatigue. Since turning his powers ‘off’ involves tinkering with the bio-electrical configuration of his body, turning ‘visible’ can also cause muscle cramps, numbness and other ill effects an imbalance in ions of the body might have. (He also takes food supplements to maintain his body’s ion balance.)
Also, Red’s ‘invisibility’ only extends to his immediate clothes. He still doesn’t know how it can do so, or how he can make other things disappear too. He tried making a mug disappear too but nothing happened; he just fainted from exhaustion but the mug didn’t vanish one bit from the video recording.
(And no, he can’t disrupt any machine by simply touching it or something. His bio-electric signature is only for him and him alone; he hopes he can extend it but the outlook is bleak.)

The Details
Hair Color:
Naturally black, though he dyes it very often. Currently it’s in a shade of brown.
Eye Color:
Brown.
Any Piercings?
On his earlobes. Mistaken for a girl when he was just born, the nurse took the liberty of punching holes on his ear without even checking his genitalia. Lucky him.
Any Tattoos?
None. He’s much too scared of needles.
Any Scars?
Just your typical childhood scratches on his legs and arms, nothing too big to be noticed.
General Appearance:
Being 175cm tall and having a weight a mere 50kg, Red can be seen as a your typical tall and lanky teenage boy (having a BMI of 16.3 means one is underweight, as 18.5 is seen as the normal BMI). Nope, Red isn’t skin and bones – he still has a layer of muscles in between – but he’s just genetically made to be lean and his (somewhat) active lifestyle simply adds more to his leanness. Tired of being called too thin, he tried doubling his serving sizes and eating more snacks, but it doesn’t seem to help that much.
As for facial features, most people tell Red that he’s got a face too soft for a guy. Despite hitting puberty a few years back (evidenced by his height spurt), facial hair has been all but elusive for him. He used to keep his hair short and neat, but he decided he’d build a whole new personality for him when he enters high school (and consequently, Hammel) so he decided to grow it out and dye it to a lighter brown shade.
As for clothing choices, Red pretty much is on the extremes. His wardrobe spans from laid-back casuals to uptight preppy clothes. What is consistent however, are his brightly patterned and colored outfits and skinny jeans.
Overall, Red can be seen as somewhat an androgynous teenager. His face is a bit confusing, causing much discomfort for the kid still looking for his identity. His hair and clothing does little to establish his masculinity too. Add that to his effeminate personality and posture and you have quite a mess in your hands.
Personality:
Having two older siblings and a loving pair of grandparents, Red grew up in a sheltered household. No matter how hard he denies it, he was babied by the people around him. As such, he can be highly dependent on other people, getting lost whenever he’s left to his own devices. He isn’t comfortable with deciding stuff on his own, needing constant advice and assurance that his decision would be fine.
Congruent to him growing up sheltered, Red is pretty much idealistic and naïve. He trusts people easily, wanting to believe in the good everyone has. He is pretty much comfortable around people, making friends easily and quickly.
Red can also be described as a child overflowing with cheerfulness and positivity. He experienced so much love growing up, so he couldn’t help but be so positive about the whole world.
Red is usually shy, but when he starts to talk, it’s hard to stop him. Red loves a good conversation and wouldn’t mind listening and participating in one. It doesn’t mean he’s such a show stealer that he interrupts almost every conversation, but he does like to pop in from time to time, especially when he’s close with the person involved. Lucky he didn’t have telepathy as his ability.
Red can be oversensitive at times. He’s not exactly the depression-cause-you-said-a-light-insult type of oversensitive; it’s just that he sometimes takes things a bit too hard than one would usually expect. This may be attributed to him being sheltered when he was young (as mentioned earlier). His oversensitivity also manifests in a way that he understands body language quite easily, having an easy time reading people’s emotions and how they tick (though not in an empathy sort of way). He believes his sensitivity to people allows him to relate with others and make friends easily.
On the same note, Red’s emotions can easily be read as he shows how he feels easily. If he’s happy, he’ll skip and prance. If he’s sad, he’ll be so quiet in the corner that you’ll fail to notice him unless you look twice. He finds it hard to mask himself and bottle his emotions up, saying it just feels so wrong and disgusting.
Red’s naturally curious. Combined with his talkative nature, it makes him come off as somewhat the nosy kid. His curiosity can also be thought of as the reason why he was gravitated towards electronics and circuits, even before his powers manifested. He wanted to know how things work and cameras, radios and television sets seemed to be a nice starting point. He opens things up and tries to see how he can put them together again. His brother’s laptop and sister’s iPod were no exceptions. Good thing his grandfather ran a junk shop (where he can take things apart and no one would really care that much) else his siblings’ gadgets would be in more danger than they are now.
Red comes off as an effeminate guy. It may be due to his sister spending much time on his little brother and dragging him wherever she goes when they were young, Red has come to appreciate things deemed too girly by the normal populace. He likes stuffed animals, furry objects and likes to use the word ‘cute!’ quite often. He enjoys shopping and has quite the eye for fashion. He also prefers chick flicks and romantic movies over blood-gore action movies. Despite all of this, he clearly identifies himself as a heterosexual and would be incredibly annoyed at if one would think otherwise. He sees his strong connection to the opposite sex an invaluable strength and asset.
Your Vices
Likes:
- Dancing (he’s a self-professed dancer)
- Pop music
- Electronics (despite them ‘hating’ him)
- Talking, laughing
- Scribbling or doodling (not so much an artist, but he tries to be)
- Hugs and kisses
- Cute, furry animals (and other cute kawaii things)
- Giraffes, leopards and other animals with exotic hides
- Sunny weather
- Comic book superheroes (he prefers DC over Marvel)
Dislikes:
- Being mistaken for a girl
- Being teased due to his thinness
- Pats on the head (such actions are reserved only for his older brother and sister)
- Needles (and hospitals in general)
- Athletics (despite being a dancer, so he claims, he’s relatively weak when it comes to physical sports)
- Rain and lightning (thunder, not so much)
Strengths:
- Being a dancer, Red’s extremely flexible and has relatively high upper and lower body strength. Also, he has an ‘innate’ sense of rhythm.
- Also, Red can pick up moves fast (dance moves or otherwise) and has above average muscle memory (though not enough to be considered meta-human or something).
- Red prides himself for blending into the crowd and making friends easy. It may be due to his cuddly face or just sun-shiney outlook in life, but he likes and does make quite a number of friends.
Weaknesses:
- Athletics. He absolutely suck at sports (being tall and lanky doesn’t really help).
- Academics. While not entirely bad at it, it takes quite a while for Red to understand terms and concepts.
- Clumsiness. Red’s gracefulness begins and ends on the dance floor. Elsewhere, he’s so clumsy that it’s as if he uses tentacles to walk on land.
- Used to the lively beats of dance music, Red’s attention span lacks finesse for slow and meticulous procedures. He has so little focus that he often gets scolded by his previous teachers for having the attention span of a five year-old.
Fears:
- Becoming invisible permanently. Not being seen in photographs came as a shock to Red, and the only thing he wants not to happen is for his ability to evolve into him being invisible even without him wishing it to be.
- Being branded as a lady, much less a gay person. He has nothing against gays, but he hates being called as such. He’s sure of who he is and he hates it when people think otherwise. From a simple dislike, it escalated to a fear of people becoming confused about him, causing him to think of ways on how to be more manly’ and somehow hate himself for being quite effeminate.
Secret:
- None. He’s pretty much transparent with the people close to him and much too young to hide such a monumental secret.
Misc:
- Jared’s developed quite an inferiority complex upon entering Hammel. He hasn’t been on Hammel long, but he feels a bit incompetent compared to the other students, probably because of the nature of his abilities. He deems his ability to be too dull; he can’t breathe fire, control plants or even heal himself. He’s invisible, but not to the naked eye.

History
Jared was the youngest son of James and Jessica Park, a petroleum engineer and geneticist specializing in meta-human research. They were the typical middle-class family living in sub-urban Canada – simple, quiet and content. But things changed a few months after Jared turned 7. James got a job as the lead engineer for a Middle East oil company and Jessica was hired to be the lead researcher in Switzerland’s meta-human school (the counterpart to Hammel). Confused as to whether to send the kids with their father or mother, the couple decided that it’ll be best for their children to stay with James’ parents in Canada. After all, with the internet going into a boom, distance becomes all but relative. So Jared, along with his older siblings Jasper and Jeraiah, were sent to live with their grandparents as their parents went off to the different parts of the world.
Despite being away, James and Jessica took it to heart to at least try and talk to their kids once a week. They also sent gifts regularly and tried their best to be home for the holidays. Also, Grandpa and Grandma Park aren’t so bad. They were fun to be with and actually were much understanding of the difference of generations than most grandparents. But overall, the experience made the three siblings closer. After all, despite having their grandparents, they’re the only ones they have around.
Jasper grew up to be the smart one. Always the top of his class, it was but natural that he right after high school graduation he went off to medical school. On the other hand, Jeraiah went on to be the one who shines on stage. She was part of the school’s drama club and works as a model part time. It was only natural that at first, Jared felt inadequate. Being the youngest, he felt as if he’s always behind his siblings’ shadow, never to truly find somewhere he can shine on. It was during this time that he went into somewhat a depression cycle, being so gloomy and down almost every day. His siblings tried to comfort him and put him into voice coaching, instrument lessons and even cooking lectures but nothing happened. It wasn’t until they saw him absent-mindedly moving to the beat when he was 10 that they forced him to try dancing. Finding his niche, his confidence slowly grew back and the lively, cheerful and talkative Jared theyve come to know returned.
Jared’s gifts first appeared when he was 13. It was the advent of the digital cameras, miniature handheld video recorders and webcams, and Jared couldn’t help but notice his absence on some of the pictures. He knew he was there but he couldn’t figure out how or why he can’t be seen. He tried seeing if the problem is with the camera (as the first notable picture came from Jeraiah’s camera) but nothing was off (he’s quite skilled with the parts already, having disassembled a dozen cameras beforehand). He was about to shrug it off as an isolated incident, seeing that he appeared in a couple of photos afterwards, but a few months later, in a camping trip with his friends, he disappeared again. This time, the photos all came from different cameras, all shot at different intervals and locations. He tried his best to simply laugh it out with his friends but inside, he was worrying deeply.
His powers went full blast when he turned 14. When he was 13, his powers only manifested at random intervals, sometimes on, sometimes off. But now, it was as if it was always on. When he went to the doctor, they have to get a more traditional scale just to get his weight (as the digital one kept on returning an error message) and he couldn’t get his learner's license because his picture can’t be taken. He’s slowly being reclusive now, not joining his friends’ trip to avoid the ridicule of not being seen on the photos. His siblings and grandparents were worried, but they don’t know what to do really.
Jessica had her hands full in the institute so it took some time for her to call and be informed about Jared’s current situation. While the problem surprised her, it wasn’t because of shock (as she worked with meta-humans on a daily basis for a good 7 years already) but it was because she didn’t expect a meta-human to come from her family. She tried to do a sweep on their family tree and it turns out that her mother’s brother (ergo her uncle) was a meta-human, an electrical manipulator who studied in Japan’s institute. To further prove Jared's meta-ness, she asked him to send her a sample of his blood to be studied. And the blood test returned positive results.
While the revelation somehow shed light on his current situation, Jared was left at odds. Being a meta-human means he’d have to go to one of the institutes in the world to train and master his ability, which meant he’d have to leave Jeraiah. She was so sad when Jasper left (granted he was home every break, but still) so he couldn’t imagine what would happen to her when he leaves. On the other hand, he was excited, as being a meta-human meant he could stay with her mom in the institute she works at. He hopes they could somehow recover the last 7 years they’ve spent apart.
His dilemma increased as his mother informed him that he couldn’t go to the Swiss institute; there was a situation regarding the rise of a meta-human militant group and he might be caught in the crossfire if he enrolls. So, she suggested she go to the American institute, Hammel, as she claims it was much safer there. She said she’s already called the recruitment office of the said institution and they said they’ll send a recruiter in a week’s time.
Jared’s one week of wait for the recruiter was a hard one. When Jeraiah heard the news, she couldn’t help but cry. Good thing Jasper was home for the break, else Jared wouldn’t know what to do. They spent the whole week trying to cram as much fun as they can. The night before the recruiter comes, Jeraiah snuck into Jared’s room and gave him a video camera. She said it was a gift from Jasper and her, and would’ve wanted him to use it to give them daily updates about his life. A video blog, so to say. She said they know Jared can’t be seen in the video, but he can think of it as his training, so that he can progress better. (She also added that Jasper would’ve been with her when she gives him the camera, but he says he’ll just cry so much that he’ll make a fool of himself so it would be better that Jeraiah alone would hand him their gift).
So now, Jared’s on to start his new life in Hammel. It’s been a rough few days for him, but he does hope things will get better soon.
