The Basics
Name: Elaine Kim Tonaya
Nicknames: Mom, Mommy, Mama, Ma’am
Age: Forty-Five
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Florist
Powers: Aura-Smelling (for lack of a better term) She can, through smell, identify the emotions of a person as well as their general character and major events from their past. This is limited to her sense of smell—if she isn’t close enough to smell them, she can’t identify anything about them. This also tends to give her allergies to certain smells, and thus allergies to people, though she hasn’t yet found the pattern between people. Nosebleeds are also common.

General Appearance: Elaine likes to look good, but she will always choose comfort over style. Her everyday outfit might consist of a nice top with some comfy slacks and a pair of well-worn sneakers. Makeup is light if present, since it’s too time-consuming.
One of her most striking qualities is her eyes. Oftentimes it seems as though she might be seeing into your soul. Her face is incredibly expressive, and she doesn’t bother to try to hide most of her emotions. She’s gained many laugh lines and other wrinkles over the years as she’s cried with different people over their problems and smiled over all their exciting new developments.
Personality: Over the years of aura smelling, Elaine has realized that people are surprisingly complex. Someone who was the victim of abuse can be the sweetest person you ever met, and a murderer can still be a good person. People change. And Elaine likes to believe that people change for the better. She always looks for a spark of good in people that she sees, though this sometimes blinds her to some of their worse qualities.
She’s a romantic, a trait she’s passed on to her son. She’s also realistic enough to realize that sometimes romance doesn’t work out, and now she’s gotten a lot smarter about the kind of people she falls in love with. At least the people she pursues, anyway.
She has a few people that she loves unfailingly, and those people she would protect to the death. She’s not afraid to stand up for the people she loves, nor is she afraid to stand up for her own ideas. She always attends city council meetings to make sure that her opinions are heard.
Elaine is not the town gossip, though if she ever wanted to be she could tell many stories. People trust her, though, not to tell any of their secrets. She might go up to someone who she recognizes as being sad and ask them what’s wrong, and her general aura of “Mom” tends to comfort people into trusting her completely. She won’t ever betray their trust, much as people may try to convince her.

History
When Elaine was ten, the oldest of three children, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Cassandra had always been the stay-at-home parent while Dad worked as a journalist, and her disease was a huge blow to the family. Not only did they not exactly have the means to pay for any treatment, but it meant that Elaine now had to step up and start to take charge of household chores more often. She learned to cook, clean, and do minor repairs around the house. She’d often arrive late to school or fall asleep in class because she’d been up late the night before sewing patches on everyone’s clothes.
At fourteen years old, Elaine moved on to high school. Her first week she began to feel more stressed due to the increased homework load. Added to this she started to have nosebleeds in the middle of class and would sneeze around certain people. She began to notice certain scents that hovered around individuals, though she had no idea what they were. She assumed the entire school was on drugs and ignored everything. After a week of these strange symptoms, she finally went in to the school nurse to ask what might be wrong with her.
The next day a recruiter from Hammel came to the door of their shabby apartment and asked to speak to Elaine. He suggested that she might be one of the meta-humans, though there had been no previous sign of it within the family. Still, she had a blood test done and discovered that yes, she was a meta-human. This fact required her to leave her family in New Jersey and go up to Vermont. It also meant that the running of the family fell to Deirdre, who was still only eleven. Their mother couldn’t even leave the bed anymore and wasn’t expected to live much longer.
Elaine had only been at Hammel a few months when she heard about her mother’s passing. She received permission to go home for the funeral and stay for a few days with her family. When she first came back home, she noticed a new smell on her sister. It took a while for Elaine to connect the new smell to Deirdre’s jealousy over her sister’s ability to leave and go to a new school. It was Elaine’s first realization of what her powers actually were. From that point she tried to discover what different smells meant.
Elaine went home for her sixteenth birthday to see her family again. Her sister’s initial jealousy had developed into hatred during the past two years, and Elaine returned to school shaken. She took refuge in the first boy to offer kindness to her, a young man named Marcus Hawthorne. After only a month of dating Elaine slept with him and conceived. She approached Marcus about the baby, but he was not interested in becoming a full-time father.
Instead of choosing to get rid of the child, Elaine saw this as an opportunity to continue to have a loving family. She named the baby boy Morgan and raised him on her own with only some support from the wealthy Hawthorne family. Upon graduating from school two years later (with much support from the entire Hammel community), she chose to remain in Pilot Ridge, close to all her friends. She set up shop as the town florist and raised her son with many of the same values, morals, and beliefs that she had come to depend upon.
She still lives in Pilot Ridge as the local florist, and she still is treated by most everyone who comes around as the town mother. She did force Morgan to move out of the house eventually, and refused to let him continue living with her when he returned to teach at Hammel. Still, she does see him at least once a week and talks to him daily, which suits her just fine.
Roleplay Example
Elaine was bent over a display of irises and crocuses when the door blew open.
“Can I help you?” she said, standing up and smiling at the new customer. The young man stood bent over and shuffled his shoes. He smelled of embarrassment and a little bit of fear, as well as a nice heaping of happiness.
“Let me guess,” Elaine said as she walked to the daffodils. “You just got a new girlfriend and you want to impress her with a splendid display of flowers, but you’ve never done this kind of thing before so you aren’t exactly sure what to do.”
She ignored the expression on the boy’s face and proceeded to gather up a simple set of daisies, daffodils, and carnations. “Here,” she said, handing the flowers across the counter. “These are really pretty flowers that won’t scare her off because their meaning is too intense. And, even better, they’re cheap, and I’m willing to bet you’re on a budget. I’ll give you that set for four dollars, deal?”
As the man left, a little bit happier and with his fear changed to a tone of anticipation, Elaine smiled to herself and returned to her flowers, each of which had their own distinct scent and emotion. “Young love,” she said, and continued organizing and freshening.
