[/size]The easy S T U F F . . .Name: Jonathan Fitzgerald Thornton (note; both name and playby stolen from North and South, a bbc dramatization of the book by the same name. He did not have super powers however)
Nickname: Most people call him Thornton. John for people who are close to him
Age: 37
Member Group:Powers trainer.
Power(s): physical Invulnerability. John Thornton is unable to feel physical pain, cannot be shot, stabbed, or damaged in any conventional way. He can never be seen bleeding or sustain loss of limb nor can he naturally suffer an illness.
However, he can be poisoned, and can be concussed or knocked out if exposed to huge amounts of physical force. If he’s hit by a train, most likely you’ll knock him out.
However, over time it has become apparent pain is not the only sensation John is becoming numb to. While the onset only started in his late twenties, John has become aware of a very gradual loss of sensation in his body. He can't feel pain, but he is also slowly losing his ability to feel any physical sensation. While it is not numbness in it’s truest sense (he can feel what he is touching), other sensations are being lost. A sense of temperature, for example. the progression is extremely slow; the tips of his fingers and his feet are the only parts without sensation; but John is aware that in time it will spread.
It is not a thought he likes to dwell on.

General Appearance:
John Thornton cuts a stern figure. His face seems to be made up entirely sharp angles, with a nose which less kind people have been known to call a beak. Combined with his usual severe expression and general choice of somber attire, he looks like a villain from a Sherlock Holmes thriller, or a medieval fable.
Due to the nature of his abilities, Thornton’s skin is completely blemish free, and due to a lifetime in England he is quite pale. Having spent most of his life at a desk job, Thornton’s physique is moderate. Without being overly muscular he keeps relatively fit by boxing training he attends twice a week.
Despite his humble upbringing, John’s mother had always installed the importance of appearance and impressions. As such, John is always well turned out, and has no place for jeans or flipflops in his wardrobe. Not being hugely affected by changes in temperature, John is most comfortable in slacks, collared shirts, blazers (sports coats) and double breasted jackets. In the colder months he often dons a scarf and overcoat out of habit and to avoid attracting attention. His slight quirk is that on outings he dons derby style hats , an homage to his mother’s views on proper gentlemen keeping their heads covered when out of doors.
He still has a top hat that his mother gave him, but he never wears it out. He can’t bring himself to sell it though.
It is often possible to actually see your reflection in Thornton’s shoes. The secret? A toothbrush.
Personality:John Thornton’s nickname at Ernst & Young was the Bulldog. It was not inaccurate; John Thornton is blunt and aggressive, but he prides himself on his self control and ability to keep a level head. While he is extremely stubborn, and at first unwilling to budge when he believes he is right, Thornton will listen to reason and can, most of the time, be make to see if he has erred.
He is not one for soft words, or for talking freely in front of people he is not well acquainted with. Given his rather limited education, he quickly feels out of place and awkward if discussion takes an intellectual turn, and so becomes withdrawn and gruff. He believes in working for money, and does not see the point in academics as a career.
If people turn their nose up at his pervious employment he is fiercely defensive, and is quick to anger if he feels someone is making a fool out of him. However, once he has been acquainted with someone, he is more likely to just fall back on his sense of propriety and become somewhat stilted and awkward.
Given the nature of his ability and it’s side effect, John no longer has any expectation of finding romance. However, Thornton has a soft spot for children, and while he fears failing them as his own father did, he hopes he can provide someone with the upbringing he couldn’t have.

Strength: Thornton is hard working, and dedicates himself fully to whatever project he takes on. He is fiercely protective of his family, his friends, and women in general, and does not hesitate to put himself between people and anything he perceives as dangerous. That being said, if angered, Thornton strikes fast and hard, and has a reputation for being unwilling to budge from what he considers the right thing to do.
Weaknesses: Thornton’s extremely serious attitude means he often appears gruff and stern, and hard to approach. This has made it hard for him to form relationships, and it often takes people a while to warm to him
Fears: Letting down his mother, waking up completely numb
Secret: Thornton hasn’t told anyone about the side effect to his ability, or how it progresses

History
prolog:
“Ok, now hold still. It’s going to hurt a bit.”
John shrugged and looked with interest at the needle gun as it narrowed in towards his arm. It was his twentieth birthday present to himself; just a celtic armband. Nothing fancy. Mother was going to be upset but it was important to him he had this. He could have this.
The needle touched his skin, and the little engine buzzed unhappily.
“Hang on, it’s stalling a bit,”
A spark of doubt entered John’s mind, and he fought the urge to roll down his sleeve and bolt out the door. “Don’t worry ab-” he started, but the woman narrowed her eyes in determination and after checking the little machine prepared to go again.
“What the hell?”
John glanced down and blanched at the sight. The needle had bent, as if it had hit solid steel rather than supposedly soft human skin. He jumped from the seat as if he’d been shocked, backing away quickly. “I’ll go, this was a mistake,” he began but the woman was already narrowing in on him, nose ring glinting. She had left the tattoo gun running and jabbed at him again, hard. The needle snapped off.
“Get out. Get out get out get out!”
He didn’t need to be told twice. Grabbing his coat from the hook she’d hung it from, he bolted out the front door and didn’t stop until he’d cleared ten blocks.
Well, that had torn it then.Chapter one: from humble beginnings...
Mrs Thornton regretted nothing. Things were hard, but it took immense pressure to create diamonds. She told herself that every night when John started washing the dishes as she fed his screaming baby sister. She might have to ask a lot of her 12 year old son but he would grow to be a better person because of it.
That was what she prayed for anyway.
They’d fallen hard. There was no point in sweet words to cover it up. Her husband had invested and lost, and hadn’t been strong enough to deal with it. But they’d be different. John would be different. He’d learn to be careful, and not risk everything on reckless ventures. She would make sure of that. Molly started crying again, and Mrs Thornton sighed.Chapter two: stronger stuff
Interview with new recruit number 746.
Age: 20
Gender: male
Place of birth: Warwickshire, England.
Subject appears to be immune to physical harm; no medical files since age 13.
So, John, when did you realize you had your ability?
I don’t know. I really don’t have time for this. I don’t want to go to switzerland. I have a family to support.
Records show you as unmarried.
My sister. and my mother. I understand the concern but there is no justification for me to be sent away for three years to learn about something I’ve been living with for 7 years, surely.
That didn’t sound like a question.
It was not one. I insist.
I’m sorry you feel that way, but meta education is a matter of global security, you understand.
No. No, I can’t say I do. I don’t use my abilities, they only affect me, I didn’t ask for this! I don’t even want it.
You could become a formidable asset to your country, or to the meta organization as a whole.
I crunch numbers, ma’am. I don’t save the world. We can’t all be super heroes.Chapter Three: with great power....
Dear Mother,
First of all, I hope that Molly hasn’t gone through the money I wired her already. Try and talk some sense into her; I’m worried she’s being frivolous.
Now, Mother, I’ve heard again from Kocher about transfer to the Hammel Institute, the American meta school. I know you think it’s mad, or dangerous but I’ve applied.
Before you become too outraged, I have some news that you will perhaps not look on with the dislike I know you will view my new employment. I’ve been cleared in the adoption process. Apparently America is a little more lenient towards single men adopting then the UK. I know you’ll be happy that I can have this.
And before you start, I know I’ve been made partner. I know what that could mean for my career. I know the future of a meta teacher is not the same as a partner in a top london accounting firm but it has been my decision to make.
I haven’t changed anyone’s life for the better, aside from you and Molly. I can change that now. Besides, let us be honest, it’s not like I am going to get hurt, is it?
Yours faithfully and devotedly,
John
