Rhett toyed with his cellphone for several minutes before finally turning the display on. He went to the contacts at looked for the name, staring at it for several seconds. Nah... I'm not sending him a text. He turned it off and threw it back in his bed. He looked at the white ceiling above. He then looked around. His apartment was silent, clean... lonely.

He missed having Trouble around, he missed having Odion around.

Maybe he simply missed having someone around.

Rhett sent him a text.

Patch was wandering the courtyard alone, as usual, being one of the only students who actually enjoyed weather in the dead of winter. Everyone else would usually be inside, bundled up and protected from storms, cold winds, and the occasional slushy rain. Patch loved it outside, even if he was lonely around this time of day. He still had a beautiful day of cold weather ahead, and that soothed him. As he walked down a side walk near a park bench where he had met a certain shy girl more than a few days ago, the cell phone he always kept in his right pocket buzzed.

I wonder who that could be... he thought as he reached a hand into his pocket and pulled out his phone. As soon as he slid the lock screen away, he saw a familiar name on his new message display. Rhett. He hadn't seen the guy in a while. Out of curiosity, he opened the text message just to see a simple "Hey" scrolled across it.

Hey, what's up?

Patch responded, after a few after of fumbling with keys in the cold.

Rhett regretted having sent that text the instant he sent it. It made him feel bad. He felt bad about Ulrich. A part of him was sort of telling him that it should had been the blonde who he texted, not Patch. He wasn't even sure why he texted Patch, he only knew he had to text someone and... well... maybe another part of him did want to text patch.

His cellphone rang and Rhett shook the thoughts off of his mind. He was now in it, he had to continue it.

Nothing.

He simply responded, knowing that was the silliest reply ever. He shook his head from left to right and back. This was silly, the whole situation was. This was not Rhett. Rhett was direct. Rhett dealt with things, he didn't wander around them.

I think I may sort of like you.

Yeah. Now he totally felt bad about Ulrich. He had the right to like two guys and be in love with third one, though, right?

Patch chose to sit while he waited for the text to come. A bench in the courtyard was a nice place to have a conversation, even if it was with a person over a phone, by text message. Soon enough the phone, now gently gripped in his right hand, buzzed again. It was Rhett, and he had responded with, "Nothing." Patch almost nodded towards this, as if he was having a face to face conversation with Rhett, acknowledging that he was bored and up to nothing too.

Maybe they could hang out, and actually start off a friendship from the wreck things had been.. and the later awkwardness, last week. He thought of the many things they might be able to do and he started to formulate a text. In the middle of his message his screen fluttered to life again, and the small machine vibrated against his fingers. "I think I may sort of like you."

Patch stared at the phone for a little while, unsure of what the message meant. Did he mean, as a friend.. like he was finally relenting and fully being sorry for everything? He.. hoped so. Even then, his head filled with confused and muddled thoughts.

What do you mean..?

He responded after a while, hoping the dots wouldn't be too much.

Exactly. What did Rhett mean? Rhett wanted to think he didn't know either, but the truth did linger in some deep point in his mind. As much as Rhett was constantly confused about his feelings, he is still not used to them, he wasn't oblivious to the whole teen romance act. After all, he had lived it with Odion and sort of was with Ulrich, even if he knew that the three situations were very, and oh so very, different.

I don't know.

Lies. Rhett shook his head again.

No, I do know. You know too.

Rhett typed his cellphone with a lot of strength. It just sucked that it was a tactile screen, you can't really type angrily with a tactile screen.

Patch dreaded what would come next, he was unsure, and doubtful as to what the complicated blonde boy would say. But still, he dreaded what might come of it. In moments his phone flickered back to life and buzzed in his hand, the text message read, "I don't know." Patch sort of sighed with relief at the text, maybe tings would wind down after all.


Suddenly his phone buzzed to life again. "No, I do know. You know too." Suddenly Patch's heart began to sink, his mind was a storm of confusion, and Patch just didn't know. He didn't know what to think, he had only met the boy a week ago, and most of their meetings weren't good. Then.. there was the fact that most of their meetings had ended badly. "Like in liking you, liking you." Came another text from Rhett. Do I even like guys? He thought, trying to think back to the day he had last seen him, and that encounter with Romeo. He just didn't know.

I don't know what to say.

Patch answered truthfully enough, he hoped that he wouldn't hurt Rhett, or get his hopes up either. He really hoped the response was neutral enough to give him some time to think.

Don't say anything, then. I wouldn't be able to hear anything you say.

Rhett rolled his eyes. He really shouldn't have expected anything less from Patch. Of course he doesn't like me back, he's too... Rhett decided not to complete his thoughts. Patch was indeed very handsome, and Rhett couldn't get his mind off that shower image, but he started to think that Patch was maybe a bit too much for Rhett.

It's ok. I get it.

Rhett's mind wandered off to Ulrich again. It wasn't like the German blonde was not as good looking as Patch, but with Ulrich, Rhett didn't quite feel so... altered in a hormonal way. And it wasn't like that was Patch's only good thing, no, the Texan boy had managed to get a side out of Rhett that not many could, and that made Rhett felt good.

It was all around that single moment. The moment when Patch told Rhett about his dad and he told Patch about his sister and mother. That was the real reason why this was all happening.
