Happy Interrogating Holidays
Christmas was a time for sharing and giving, a time to spend with friends and family, a time to show them how much you care. This Christmas happened to be even more special in the Gallo/Jones household for they were spending it all together with an added guest. If only their guest knew just how ‘special’ this was going to be. Lucah had a good idea of just how terrified he should be, but he was keeping an optimistic outlook on this holiday. After all, he’d be spending it with his girlfriend, what could go wrong?
Upon arriving at the Gallo/Jones residence, Lucah was straightening his button-up and making sure his hair was still okay despite the snowflakes that were falling at a constant rate. He was nervous. Not because he thought the older boys were bad guys, oh heavens no, but because he was an older brother and he knew how he would be if Jezebel ever brought a boy to meet him. He couldn’t help but wonder if Callie had told them they were officially an item; part of him was hoping that she hadn’t. Maybe then the interrogation wouldn’t be quite so brutal.
Tapping lightly on the door, Luc shoved his hands in his pockets to keep from fidgeting. If he kept dwelling on this meeting, surely it would end much worse than if he just relaxed. So that was what he did, or attempted to do. Moments later, the door opened revealing a very excited blonde girl that practically jumped at him to give him a hug. Tension slid from his shoulders as he caught her in the embrace.
When they pulled apart he appraised her outfit, one that he could tell she had spent time picking out though she’d look beautiful in a paper bag. Lucah gave her a quick peck on the lips and just as their lips met, the first of the brothers appeared in the doorway and cleared his throat. Freezing, Luc stepped away and folded his hands behind his back. From the appearance and expression of the older boy that stood in the doorway, Lucah could guess that he was Eric. He was well-dressed, formally so and his eyes..well if looks could kill. “You must be Lucas,” The man said in a controlled tone.
“Uhm, Lucah actually. Lucah Ivaskov,” Offering his hand, Luc had to try to remember that manners were extremely important in this situation. He couldn’t come off arrogant and he couldn’t come off condescending. Otherwise, he was going to be banned from seeing Callie.
Eric took the cryo’s hand and almost recoiled from the cold, but instead gave his hand a firm squeeze to show his superiority over the Romanian boy. Had it been anyone else, Luc wouldn’t have taken that, but because he didn’t want to lose Callie, he did nothing and just gave the other man’s hand a slight shake. Before things could get anymore strained, Calliope stepped in and spoke up, “Alright, c’mon you guys let’s go inside before we freeze. Well, before Eric and I freeze.” She shot Lucah a sympathetic smile and ushered her brother forward before grabbing her boyfriend’s hand and pulling him in after her.
As Callie gave him the tour of the condo, the short version since she wasn’t allowed to show him the room she occasionally crashed in, he could see himself one day owning something similar. It was nice, three bedrooms, very neat and decorated for the holiday season. He had to admit, his respect for Callie’s half-brother went up a few notches as he looked around more and more. Eventually he was led into the dining room where the Christmas dinner would be held.
When he entered the room, he was told to sit across from Callie while Eric took the head of the table, as he should. Luc gave Callie the most reassuring smile he could muster while he twiddled his thumbs as they waited for the other brother to show up. It didn’t take long until a more casually dressed boy walked in. Luc could make out subtle similarities in appearance as he looked at the newcomer and he figured it was Callie’s brother, Niko. Giving the other boy a greeting nod, the other gave him a slight wave as he sat at the other end opposite of Eric.
Well at least this guy wasn’t nearly as intimidating as the older one, but then again, the Spanish Inquisition hadn’t started just yet. As they passed the food around, Lucah didn’t recognize some of the more foreign dishes outside of American favorites. He took a guess that they were more custom to Greek food due to Callie’s heritage. It all looked amazing though and he was looking forward to eating it all. “The food looks amazing, really,” He said and Callie gave him a bright smile which indicated that she had helped make it.
Eric shot him a look and Niko just leaned back in his chair. Any moment now, the questions would begin to fly.
As if on cue, just after fixing his plate, Eric turned his attention to Lucah, “So, Lucah, you’re from Romania correct?” He asked before taking a bite of Christmas ham. Blue eyes were fixed on the Romanian and it made him extremely uncomfortable, if it weren’t for Callie’s foot nudging his as a sign of showing that she was there, he might not have been able to answer.
“Yes. I was born there and lived there until I manifested,” Luc said in as even a tone as he could manage. Taking a spoonful of mashed potatoes, he shoved his face so that he could wait a little bit before answering yet another question. This was already a very stressful dinner. What would happen if they asked of his intentions of dating Callie? That would be an utter disaster.
Eric gave a slight nod and took another bite of food. Once his mouth was cleared he asked yet another question, “Why did you stay in Vermont after you graduated? I figured you would want to be back in your home country.”
The question was a sore spot and from the look on Callie’s face, he could tell that she knew it too. But if he didn’t answer, things would only be worse. Taking a deep breath, he tried thinking of a way to answer that wouldn’t sound horrible. “Well, I wasn’t really ready to take on the life that was already arranged for me out there. Not to mention, Vermont had a lot to offer me, a lot more than Romania by the time I made my decision,” There, nothing about his poor family relations, nothing about the arranged marriage that he turned down. Simple and easy.
Before Eric could ask another, Niko spoke up, “Calliope tells us that you have a younger sister of your own. Don’t you miss her?” Yet another question that hurt Luc to talk about.
Unable to get an answer out, Callie stepped in, her expression flustered and embarrassed. “I know what you are trying to do and he doesn’t have any sort of baggage. He chose to stay here for his own reasons, and none of them are your business,” She set her fork down harder on the table than what she intended and excused herself motioning for Lucah to follow her.
Looking between the two brothers, he rubbed the back of his neck and stood up uttering an apology of his own before going after Callie. He found her in the kitchen, that same humiliated expression on her face as she sat on the counter. Luc walked over and leaned against the counter beside her, “Callie, you can’t be mad at them for questioning me. I mean, I can handle it. I’d be the same way if it was Jezebel.”
Frowning, the blonde looked at him and shook her head, “I just hated the look on your face when they brought her up because they don’t get what happened. They wouldn’t understand.”
Niko and Eric got up from the table quietly and tip-toed over to the wall, eavesdropping on the conversation between the couple. Lucah sighed and shrugged, “But that’s just it, they don’t know what happened. I’m sure if they did they would understand because they’re older brothers themselves. Callie, you know the only reason they are doing this is because they want to make sure I’m good enough for you.”
Callie sighed and nodded, stroking his hair lightly, “I just wish they would see that you are.”
Niko and Eric looked at each other and as much as Eric wished to deny it, he was starting to believe that Callie was right. Niko nudged his brother forward and they hesitantly walked into the kitchen. Eric stood by while Niko made the first move, “Lucah, we’d both like to apologize for our rude behavior. W-we heard what you said and you’re right, we are just looking out for her. But you do seem like a good guy.”
Callie smiled brightly and hopped off the counter, giving her brother a tight squeeze. Eric rubbed the back of his neck and nodded, “Niko’s right. You do seem like a decent person and since you clearly understand what it’s like being an older brother, I really think you are good for our sister.”
Lucah smiled and Callie turned her attention to her half-brother giving him a squeeze as well before calling out, “Group hug!” She pulled the other two into the hug and awkwardly the three boys patted each other’s backs and they all started laughing.
