General Appearance:
At 5'4" he's rather on the short side, a fact he considers most unfortunate. He had hoped that testosterone would add a few inches, but alas this was not to be. He attempts to compensate for this unfortunate height by devoting his free time to the gym, which has resulted in a rather more buff body than is typical for his age.
He keeps his hair short but allows his chin to grow what fuzz it can, reveling in the fact that he has facial hair. The fuzz helps hide the fact that his face is smooth and heart-shaped rather than the rugged, worn face he wishes he had.
He's not a flashy dresser. He considers tailored jeans and grunge-printed polo shirts to be upscale and thus is usually seen in jeans with holes in them and baggy t-shirts unless he needs to impress someone.
He usually has a congenial smile on his face and a relaxed gait, giving an impression of nonchalance and optimism. His body isn't perfect, but he's rather pleased with it all the same and if he occasionally stops to admire it in the mirror, well, he worked hard for it so who can really blame him?
Personality:
Hart is a friendly guy. He won't accost people in the supermarket, but he's more than willing to hold a lengthy conversation with people he doesn't know, assuming they're up for it. He's pretty good about noticing when someone else is uncomfortable and will cut things short if they are. Of course, just because he's sociable doesn't mean he gets close to people; he rarely tells anyone personal things. He would rather live his life as a normal guy than be the poster child for identity anything.
Although he doesn't like his secrets being known this is because he wants to be under the radar and not because he's (usually) all that offended by other people's opinions. It's difficult to offend him and so he assumes that others are the same. He will pick on people because he doesn't think they should be bothered by it and is often surprised when what was meant as gentle teasing is taken as malicious or hurtful.
He does his own thing for the most part. He likes to maintain an image of independence, though sometimes that means doing the opposite of what is expected to prove that he is as independent as he claims. Sometimes he would be better off doing the expected, but exerting his independence is generally more important to him.
He's not going to get in anyone's faces about anything; for the most part he has a live and let live attitude. He resents people trying to tell him how to live; he gets enough of that from his family. Usually, however, he'll quietly simmer rather than telling anyone off. Being an angry radical just isn't how he deals with life.
While he's willing to give other people the benefit of the doubt, when he does make a negative judgment it can be difficult for him to unseed it no matter what evidence to the contrary he amasses.
He's also a very patient person, both with other people and with seeing his goals through. Even when he's made up his mind about something it may take him awhile to act on that decision while he contemplates how to best accomplish whatever it is he's set out to do.

History
Hart was born Shannon Cynthia Kenney on February 18, 1971 in the wrong body. This wasn't something he recognized right away; his family doted on him and his elder sister, Tiffany Beth, dolling them up and encouraging them to be the epitome of spoiled princesses.
Tiffany was always in a contest for their parents attention and affection, trying to prove that she was the better daughter. She thrived on praise and adoration and could somehow always wheedle her way into more and more presents. Hart attempted to compete, but he was quieter, and while he looked up to his sister he had a difficult time moving out of her perfect shadow.
After all, with a father who was a wealthy oil tycoon and a mother who was simply fashionable Hart and his sister were expected to maintain the elaborate facade their parents hid behind; Tiffany was a natural at it. Hart had a slightly more difficult time, particularly once puberty hit. Suddenly, nothing seemed right. All the changes his body was going through were wrong, wrong, wrong, a fact he initially chalked up to the fact that his interest was very definitely in girls.
Not that he was going to tell his parents that. Registered Democrats they might be, but they were far from open-minded.
He left Seattle to head to North Carolina, attending college at ECU to obtain a teaching degree. During his time away at college he came out to his parents as a lesbian. They were less than pleased with this revelation and even less pleased when he chopped off his hair and began binding, sporting a deliberately androgynous look. It wasn't unusual for people to assume he was a man and he found....he liked that. It felt right, much more right than being a woman and a lesbian. A little bit of research and some time spent with the GSA and things began to click into place.
He had some money in savings, thanks to his parents, and he made sure to transfer all of it to his own account; he didn't want to risk his financial security if they had a negative reaction. He began attending therapy, though he made sure that nobody in his family knew. He attended his sister's wedding as a woman; he grew up with his niece knowing him as a woman. He continued to bind, but he hesitated to come out to his family a second time.
He took up a job teaching history to middle schoolers and coaching girl's soccer, a job he enjoyed despite the fact that his students were frequently self-absorbed brats (hey, he had experience with that) and by the time 2000 rolled around he'd saved up enough money to achieve (part of) what he desired: he legally changed his name (Hart after his paternal grandfather and Sylvester after the maternal; both quite fortunately too dead to object) underwent top surgery and began taking testosterone, though he eschewed bottom surgery.
During his recovery from the surgery his girlfriend left him (a fact he considers bitter-sweet; he was heartbroken, but on the other hand since she identified as lesbian that meant that she acknowledged him as a man.) and the school very kindly informed him that he'd been let go (due to the recession, of course, not because of the many parental complaints at all) and so he sucked up his pride and went back to his family, hoping for some monetary aid until he could find a different job. No such luck; the Kenney's could tolerate a lesbian daughter (even a *gasp* Republican one), but they could not accept a transgendered son.
Through everything the one family member Hart has kept in touch with is his niece (though she conveniently never mentioned to him that she ran away from home) and when she wrote to him saying that she was in Pilot Ridge and wasn't allowed to keep her cat he picked up and moved; not too difficult a task for someone who had been recently let go from yet another job (thank you, PTA, for digging up his past, he wanted to deal with upset parents a second time) and had no real ties to the city he'd been living in. He's found an apartment and has taken in Ouch on Jessica's behalf. He counts himself fortunate to have gotten a job with the Department of Public Safety but while he would like for this job to stick, he isn't entirely hopeful.
