AU: Pilot Ridge Blood Drive! (OPEN to ALL)

OOC: I have two notes before this gets started.

1) This AU is basically not an AU. It's what the Japanese would call an omake, or an "extra". It's a scene that takes place in Canon!Hammel, but under a set of amusing circumstances.

2) I blame Sean for this thread entirely.

Volunteering with the Red Cross was not a new concept for Dr. Nakia Kenjutsushi. In fact, she had volunteered with them often during the blood drives in Japan, and knew the international Standard Operating Procedures even before they had given her the basics course. Really, it was a refresher she hadn't needed, though she was amused at the fact that they gave her a courtesy Japanese translation.

Over the three days of the drive, the group of nurses, EMT's, and doctors that had signed up would be asking questions, filing forms, and drawing blood from the residents of Pilot Ridge. The various general volunteers were either students or locals who talked to those donating and made sure they were eating small snacks or drinking water as they waited. They weren't being payed, and many of them were doing this simply from the goodness of their hearts.

Or, in the case of a few of the donating, a free snack.

In either case, Nik surveyed the room with a small smile, then looked to the ticket machine that had been installed. As predicted, it was already into the high fifties, when their registered count was only at twelve. Flicking the number over, the albino woman called out to the crowds gathered in the large area.

"Number 13, please step forward and present your documentation!"

Sean had many mixed opinions about the Red Cross, most of them borne from his vigorous opposition to irrational policies based on ignorance and prejudice. The Red Cross was responsible for immeasurable good in the community, but some of their policies were indefensible in the face of current laws and medical science.

Not that his opinions mattered to most people. It wasn’t as though he had donated blood within the past two decades.

Given those policies, Pilot Ridge was a poor choice for a blood drive. Fully a third of the population was ineligible due to prejudice, and that was a conservative estimate.

However, his ineligible status hadn’t prevented the telepath from going to the blood drive to see how the collection fared. He looked up when Number 13 rose to her feet, and he glanced down at his newspaper. The young woman was ineligible, which she would soon find out. While she was healthy and safe, Sean knew her boyfriend, and that her boyfriend had an ex-boyfriend.

It was incredibly problematic. It was also a shame.

When the young woman went back with one of the employees, he rose to check in with Nik and see how everything was going.

“I see there are a lot of volunteers,” the telepath remarked, surveying the room. “That’s always heartening.”
