The Stewarts had mostly joined the car wash on this principle:

It was hot.

The best way to get cool without having to sit inside was to get wet.

Car washes let you get wet and, better still, they could sneak away for a smoke between cars.

So far, they hadn’t had the chance to do the last one, but they were hopeful on the topic. Their attire was…interesting, of course. Naomi was dressed in one of Orion’s shorts and a bikini top, and Orion had shorts and a tank top. Naomi had tried to talk him into going shirtless—we have the body for it, she’d said. But Orion had turned her down, pointing out they were both too pale and they’d end up with a sunburn.

Which Naomi had. Orion could feel the twinge on his own skin and so was inclined to be more sympathetic.

The car wash had been busier than they’d expected, so they hadn’t actually gotten a chance to go away for a smoke. This was making them both a little irritable, and when the next car drove up, the woman stared at him, then at Orion. Then she sighed and went to the window, leaning against the door as it opened.

”What kind of wash do you want?” she asked, hiding a yawn behind her hand. ”And please make it a fast one.”
