Whistle While You Work (River, Jason, Wayne)

River Tseung and Jason Prowler have been assigned to wash Wayne Dietrich's car in the evening

Despite having one car washed already today, it occurred to Wayne that having another one get the same treatment wouldn't be all that bad. Especially since his other car was mostly a winter vehicle and rarely had the chance to see the bright sunshine of summer unless he was washing it himself. So, after taking his Ford home, the recruiter had come back to Hammel in another car - this one older and yet just as pristine. A 1962 Corvette painted in traditional black rolled into the lot and parked in a different area (since the parking lot was more crowded now) with two boys hanging around.

Cutting the purring engine with a turn of the key, the old man stepped from the car, both mechanical limbs glinting in the late afternoon light as he greeted the boys. "Mind giving her a good washing, boys?" he asked. "Poor thing hasn't seen much of daylight since March, and I want to treat her nice."

A car wash! While a lot of students probably thought this would be boring and dumb work, River was quite excited to be out in the sun, talking with people and messing around with water while making car owners happy. He was working with Jason, a guy he had met a while back on the training field and had hit it off really well with. Dressed in a loose tanktop and khaki shorts, with an oversized hat tilted sideways on his head, he peered up as another car pulled into their section of the car wash, immediately recognizing the driver.

"Mr. Dietrich!" he called, hopping to his feet from where he was taking a break on the curb and happily making his way over to the older man. "Nǐ Hǎo!" Knowing the recruiter spoke Mandarin, he almost always took advantage of the fact when speaking to him.

River knew nothing about cars, but the one he was driving seemed pretty special, if appearance meant anything. "Of course we can!" he chirped, giving his washing partner a grin. "I promise we'll do the best we can." Switching back to his family's first language, he added,"[How are you today?]" He had gotten to know the man fairly well from his time at Hammel, mostly because he was just so friendly to pretty much everyone.

A car wash…not the greatest of activities but one Jason knew would help him get more involved at campus, he was taking more initiative in that respect as of late. The Student Council was one of the many ways he planned to step up his game. He left the dorms in his sunglasses, boardshorts, a tight black tank top, and black flip flops and headed toward the car wash. He knew his partner for the wash was River which made things a little better. That kid could make any situation a positive one and Jason knew washing cars, even to raise money, wasn’t something that was fun.

The day was hot and supper sunny. He met up with River at the car wash spot where there were buckets filled with soap and water already prepared for the two to take on the oncoming cars. A hose, yellow sponges, turtle wax, and towel cloths laid in packages next to the bucket inviting the workers to get hop to it. “What’s up my dude!” Jason excitedly greeted River with a smile. “I know you’re ready for washing cars today!” This guy was ready for anything; River could probably take a punch to the face with a smile.

An engine revved with much ferocity as the first car pulled up at the hand wash. Jason’s attention was immediately drawn to the black car, he whistled. “River, look at this old school corvette!.” He said with excitement. Jason knew his cars, he wanted one himself but he never got the chance to go for his driver’s test. He had no idea what River was saying as he spoke to the man in what he thought was Chinese. Jason also greeted the driver as he got out of the car, “Nice Corvette. what year is this thing like 1961, 1962?”

Wayne chuckled as River bounded up, excitable as ever. "Hello to you, too, my boy," he replied, switching over to Mandarin briefly as he added, "[Very well, and yourself?] I'm sure she'll be really happy under your exuberant hands, River."

While he'd never met Jason, the recruiter was immediately impressed with the boy's enthusiasm and knowledge of the vehicle he'd just driven in. "As a matter of fact, you're right on the nose, kid," he answered, patting the hood gently with his flesh and blood hand. "'62, though she's been restored recently. Knew there was a pretty little thing under there when I got her at auction last year."

"You seem to know your classics, kid. Ever think about joining the school's auto club? Bet you'd do wonders in it."

River glanced at Jason as he excitedly named the car, impressed. "Man, I know nothing about automobiles," he replied with a laugh. "It looks cool, though!" Maybe it was something he would have to look into learning about. Although, he did tend to be more of a nature guy than machinery.

"[I've been great, thanks for asking!]" he replied cheerfully. It was always nice to speak in his native tongue. "I hope so, sir! I think I'll leave the techy talk to Jason, though," he added, jerking his thumb in his friend's direction. "He seems to know way more than me about this sorta stuff, although that's really not saying much."

River went to grab a bucket and hose, and began to carefully clean the car, keeping an ear open for conversation at the same time. "What have you been up to lately, Mr. Dietrich?" he asked curiously. "If you don't mind me asking." Wayne was such an interesting character, River really wanted to learn more about him.
