TR: All Bark (Uriah and Madison)

There’s a mean dog loose in the park, and someone ends up a tree.

[Madison Bane]

Seriously, this again? Madison shook his head as he made a giant leap into the air, his hands finding purchase on the bark of the tree, hoisting himself up just in time. The last time he had been in the park, a dog had ‘attacked’ him. But at least that dog had been friendly, it just wanted to play fetch and wanted attention, but this dog... “Well! That’s just awesome!” Madison yelled from his perch, his voice dripping venom. The crazy mutt had just ripped his latest story to shreds, what was left of his notebook now a prized trophy in the dog’s mouth.

Madison scooted back on the tree, looking down at the bloody tears in the palms of his hands. He drew pictures, played video games, read comic books – his hands weren’t exactly used to rough surface. He adjusted his glasses and shook his head, cursing his rotten luck.

“Hey!” He shouted at a passing figure. “Can you help me here? Call 911 or something!”

Uriah liked animals, for the most part. There were always a few that he wouldn't get along with. Mozzie being one of them... That ferret would always be in Uriah's mind as Christian's worst idea ever. Reminiscing over this thought and the stories tied to it, Uriah did what had become a habit. He wandered the town. He had no destination in mind, nor any real purpose. It just let him think.

His thinking was interrupted by someone yelling at him. Looking over he saw the problem. A dog was keeping some kid up a tree. As bad as it sounded, the kid struck Uriah as being a geek, and probably bullying material. Pausing he considered the situation.

He didn't want to call the police on such a silly situation, but he couldn't think of many other options. Hmm... An idea came to mind as he considered his power. Dogs have very sensitive hearing. They can use it for all sorts of things. So how would an animal react if it lost the sense of sound. Deciding to at least give it a try, Uriah focused internally and created a bubble around him.

In the bubble were quite a few things. All of them were the same as before the bubble, except for the silence that no permeated the area. The dog became obviously unsettled and began looking around as it tried to continue barking. Trying to think quick, Uriah allowed the sound of his voice to penetrate. It seemed so much louder than normal thanks to the forced silence.

"BOO!" That was all he needed, and the dog panicked and ran away. Laughing at himself, he let sound return just in time to hear the dog whimpering as it retreated. "Hey kid, the mutt is gone. Try not to break your glasses on your way down."

Madison had been made fun of for his appearance before, and he wasn’t really affected by it anymore. He usually wasn’t listening anyways, turning his reality into a story while people asked him questions. Sometimes reading stories and playing stories wasn’t enough – sometimes he just had to create them. Besides, the dog didn’t care what Madison looked like, it probably would’ve gone after some pretty boy too if it had the chance.

Watching as the dog started to whine, Madison had to wonder what the person’s power was. Maybe they could control animal minds, or inflict some kind of unseen torture. Madison smiled at the prospects and already the gears were rolling. A good crime fighter always needed an excellent power – this would help in any situation. Even when helping someone who was stuck up a tree. Usually the cat was stuck up the tree, but this could work either way.

Madison’s grin faded slightly. “Thanks, and don’t worry about them. They’re fake.” Lowering himself down, Madison dropped ungracefully to the grass, getting a better look at his ‘saviour’. He didn’t really need anything else from the guy, so he turned to see if any of his work was salvageable. He frowned at the slobbery bits of paper – it was all that was left of his story. “I guess I’ll have to start over,” he said, glad his wallet was in his back pocket and hadn’t become a chew toy, “and buy a new notebook.”
