Is This The End, Or Possibly The Beginning?

It would have been a lot easier to pull the job off if he had used backup, but Jared was out of time, which also meant he was out of options. It was now or never, and he’d just have to fill the boys in on what happened when he got back. He had received a package from Kevin, and he had the feeling that the price had just gone up. Upon opening the box in his dorm room he had found a few bloodied fingers wrapped up in a pair of panties. A pair that he was fairly sure had belonged to Kevin’s wife. It was now or never. If he couldn’t pull off the heist it would very quickly turn into a death match, one that he didn’t have much hope of surviving.
Jared hadn’t thought it through when he had grabbed what clothes he had and a duffel bag and thrown it in the back of a truck that was parked on the road by the school. He stopped only to shave off every bit of hair he could get from his body. He kept the hair on his head though, it wasn’t as if it wouldn’t be suspicious if he was suddenly bald and a robbery was reported. He had texted Odion but there was no answer, and there wasn’t another soul he would trust with something this heavy. Checking his phone one last time before he got in the truck and hotwired it he sighed when it simply showed the time. It was too late now, and it was all on him. He wasn’t thinking straight anymore but he knew he’d have to get this figured out.
The tires squealed against the pavement as he blew through Pilot Ridge. If this went well he would be back by the end of tomorrow. If it didn’t; well he was doing his best not to think about that outcome. He gripped the wheel tightly and let the highway take his thoughts away. He had a few hours to figure out the best course of action but that wouldn’t make a bit of difference if he didn’t know the layout. All he knew was that Rhett had suggested hitting a jewelry store in Maine. At least that way he wouldn’t have to worry about bringing extra attention to Hammel. He was going to try to do this without using his powers though. This was yet another reason why his dedication to lock picking was a good thing.
He was a few hours into the drive when he slapped off the radio. It seemed like every song that was playing was related to what was quite possibly going to be his untimely demise. He took a moment to regain his composure at a rest stop along the way and was back on the road within a few minutes. This time he noticed the set of headlights start tailing him when he left. He grinned and drove on as if nothing was out of the ordinary. It had always been Kevin’s style to take care of things himself. The rest of the drive was uneventful; however the headlights never seemed to lose much distance from the stolen truck. He pulled over a few blocks from the jewelry store and started mentally preparing himself. Jared got out of the truck to grab his duffel bag and went back into the truck to get changed.
He put the ski mask into his back pocket and adjusted his new shoes. He hadn’t used any of these clothes yet, it was a damn shame that he was going to have to burn them before the night was over. He slipped the pistol he had been hiding from the world into the back of his waistband. The latex gloves were the last thing to go on, and it was only a few seconds before he was walking towards the jewelry store. He was already mentally casing it. Rhett may have thought he was the brains, but Jared certainly wasn’t lacking in the planning department. He couldn’t see any security cameras on the outside of the building but that didn’t stop him from pulling the mask over his face and darting towards the back alley. He saw the dark SUV drive by as soon as he was in the alley. Kevin would be waiting for him to leave, and that was fine with him. He needed someone to pin this on.
He dropped to his knee and carefully began to pick the back door to the store. He wasn’t certain if he should stop the alarm from going off or let the police come and pick up Kevin. He decided it would be easiest to deal with it himself. You could never trust the law; it didn’t matter where you were. The door was opened an instant later and he ran inside, straight to the alarm box. He was only as good as his tools for once and he had to hope this one would work to deactivate the alarm like he had been promised. He hooked it up and breathed a sigh of relief when the alarm turned off ten seconds later. Most store alarms had a timer for employees to enter their code before the police were dialed, and it looked like he had made this deadline.
It didn’t take long for him to open and empty everything he could in the store. His bag was full and he was about to leave when he heard movement from somewhere behind him. He could have shot himself with the gun he had brought at this point. He had left the back door wide open. He also heard movement from above him. He should have realized that there was an apartment above the store. He reached behind his back to feel for the pistol. He carefully pulled it out and turned the safety off as silently as possible.
He walked to the back, but not before he slipped his bag of loot behind a display. Kevin wouldn’t be stupid enough to end him without the paycheque. He tucked the pistol back into the front of his pants and prayed silently that it wouldn’t go off. He had barely covered it again when he felt the shotgun barrel between his shoulder blades and the lights to the store flicked on. One thing Kevin wouldn’t have known about Jared was that he could phase. He turned slowly to face the eyes he still remembered. “It’s been awhile mate.” He said sheepishly, even sending a smirk at Kevin. That was all he got out before he heard the sound of another gun cocking. “Bloody hell…” He muttered. A shaky voice called out. “Don’t move, the police are on the way. I’ll shoot if you try anything.” Jared wasn’t convinced.
Apparently Kevin wasn’t either because the shotgun was pointed away from Jared’s chest and fired in the general direction of the shopkeeper. “Okay, you win!” The keeper called, the sound of footsteps retreating back upstairs echoed through the store. Jared took the moment to draw his pistol and point it straight at Kevin’s face. “Now you’re going to let me walk out of here, and you’ll call off the hit if you don’t want anyone to witness you being here, considering you aren’t as prepared as I am.” Jared said, motioning to Kevin’s ungloved hands. The cops would be sure to look for the source of the shotgun spray as well and that was enough for Jared. Kevin dropped the gun and nodded. “You win this one Bell, I’ll keep my word, but I still expect payment.” Jared nodded and walked out of the back door, keeping his pistol trained on the back of Kevin’s head. He stopped only to pull out the bag of loot. As soon as the door was closed he started piling garbage in front of it. He had to make sure Kevin was caught and convicted. They’d be looking for his partner, but there was nothing about Jared that would give them clues.
Jared didn’t hesitate to hop back in his stolen truck and strip everything off. If he was lucky this vehicle was never technically stolen, and Odion would cover for him. That meant getting back to Pilot Ridge as fast as he could. He left as fast as he could and started driving back to Vermont. He stopped and took a back road just to burn all of the clothing he had used for the infiltration. He waited for the fire to go out and scooped the ashes into a garbage bag. He brought that with him back to Pilot Ridge. He stopped at the dump and disposed of both the pistol and the bag of ashes before he headed back to the school.
He walked back into the dorm with his bag of goods and flopped down on his bed, letting the events of the night sink in. He was free; for the time being. He wasn’t sure for how long, but he had enough cash to get out of anything right now and if all went well he wouldn’t be hearing from Kevin for a long time. He picked up his phone and sent a text to Odion. “We need to talk. Let me know when you have time.” Was all it said; Jared had every intention of staying up to answer Odion, but he was passed out before the message had even left his phone. He woke up in the middle of the night and hit send, only to fall back asleep with a grin on his face.
