After two months back at Hammel, Jesse was getting tired of being on probation. While he understood it was a necessary evil, at least until he won some sort of trust back from the staff, it still sucked when he watched roommates disappear over the weekend to head downtown for entertainment.
It wasn’t even the weekend yet, and he was tired of being cooped up in his dorm once classes were finished. He missed being able to roam around town at will. The best he could do at this point was to mope around the grounds of the school. He didn’t know what would happen if he tested leaving them. After working so hard at getting back in, he wasn’t about to screw anything over.
He had already accomplished a good chunk of his homework for the day, but his roommates were being noisy in the common area and he had no desire to stay in his room. After yanking on a thick hoodie, he jammed his cigarettes and lighter in his pocket and headed outside. He was restless today, and he didn’t quite understand it until he looked at his phone. The date was merrily displayed along with the time, and for a moment he sucked in his breath and just held it.
He knew why he was a little more on edge today. The teenager swallowed and closed his eyes, trying to force down any feelings that tried to surface. Now was not the time to get hung up on his past yet again. Okay, it would have been Gabriel’s birthday today. He probably would have cracked sarcastic jokes about his age and everyone at the compound would have been civilized...
No. He pushed the thoughts away and moved faster, ignoring the chill on the air. His phone was shoved back in his pocket, while his lighter and a cigarette were withdrawn from the other. The courtyard seemed as safe a place as any, and he made his way over, cigarette dangling between his lips as he lit it. He didn’t even care who else was around. He wanted to be left alone for a few minutes. In a vague effort to distract himself, he threw his back against a tree in the corner and closed his eyes again. The minute pain was a distraction, but not enough of one. Today was not going to be easy.
