Alex set down his copy of Oedipus Rex. He'd read the entire thing in one sitting without even stopping - two hours had been spent sitting on a couch of the Student Lounge without talking to anyone, and just focusing on the text in front of him. It was a recommendation from a website, which had a list of books that involved some sort of character who could see the future. He knew that it was more common in mythology for someone to have the curse that he had, but Tiresias the Prophet almost had it worse. Rarely, people listened to him (Oedipus had shouted at him for delivering the truth), and even worse, he was blind, as well as helpless. Back in ancient Thebes, there really wasn't sort of help for disabilities.
He knew that not everything he saw would come true. In a way, it was a bit of a double-edged sword. He would end up worrying whether it'd happen or not, and he'd feel awful if it did. Then again, as the play had expressed, avoiding one's fate didn't help much. One would try to avoid it as much as possible, and yet, in Oedipus, he ended up making the prophecy come true as he tried to escape it - he'd accidentally killed his real father due to his temper issues, and married his real father's wife to boost his claim to the throne, unaware that she was actually his own mother. He couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor guy.
Maybe he'd read Antigone next. He wasn't sure, though.
Though, he wondered if what he saw about his brother was going to come true - he'd seen his brother's gravestone in a vision not too long ago, which had done nothing but unnerve the teen. Maybe it would come true, but then again, hopefully not. He'd spoken to his brother earlier in the day, right after classes - and Frankie was still alive. He was confused about the whole thing, but more worried than anything else. If he'd seen a vision along the same lines several times, was that warning that it'd come true? Alex barely noticed as someone sat down next to him.
