[Sawyer Lynn]

It was easy to score every time when you play alone, Sawyer thought to herself, mildly irritated. Sure, she wasn't about to go and find someone to play with but would it kill anybody to try and play with her? She wasn't that prickly when she was playing basketball, she figured.

Although, in other people's defenses...all they saw was her prickly side. She didn't actually blame them for not even trying.

Using the heel of her palm to wipe the dripping sweat from her eyebrow, Sawyer bounced the ball against the floor a couple of times before shooting. She jogged over to the net to receive the ball that had gone through.

Her shirt was already soaked through and she grumbled slightly. Moving over to where she had placed her sports bag, she took out the clean shirt was going to wear after the play and took off her wet one to hang dry.

No, the young lady had no concept of shame. Not when she had spent her childhood and a part of her adolescence changing in front of a bunch of girls. She wasn't about to show any kind of shame now, was she?

She wiped some excess sweat that was on her forehead with the wet tee and found a ring hook built into the basketball post so she hung it there and continued playing.

She'd come to the gym because she wanted to do something active. She'd spent most of the winter months inside doing absolutely nothing productive that wasn't homework. Homework didn't keep muffin tops and love handles at bay no matter how awesome that would have been.

She'd thought to change into yoga pants and a tank, anticipating at least somehow working up a sweat. She wore a hoodie and one of her many pairs of finger-less gloves (these ones were black). It was still cold enough outside that wandering around without sleeves was uncomfortable enough. She'd almost completely passed by the basketball court when she spotted a girl shooting hoops by herself. Basketball wasn't Katya's strong suit, but it beat standing around doing nothing. She made her way court-side. The worst that she saw happening was the other girl telling her to shove off and leave her alone. Those weren't bad odds.

"Mind if I join ya?" She asked with a smile.

She hadn't been paying much attention to anything besides her three pointers but when she heard a voice behind her, Sawyer turned and raised an eyebrow at the girl with the strange hair.

"Sure...try to keep up." The brunette smirked and bounced the ball against the floor in the other girl's direction.

"Nice hair." Sawyer ran her fingers through her own and quirked her eyebrows in the blue-haired girl's way. "I've always wanted to dye my hair. Do you think pink looks good on me?" She asked with her head tilted to the side and her hips jutting out.

She was definitely being mean but hey, if the girl can handle it, who's to say Sawyer won't like her?

She'd had time to remove her messenger bag and hoodie before the ball was sent her direction. She'd not been told to disappear, so that was a good sign, right?

And that was when the comment about her hair cropped up. "Thanks." It was usually a conversation starter which could go either way. Some people liked unnatural colors, and some people didn't. Katya's face scrunched a bit in thought as she dribbled her way out onto the court.

The smile returned as she brought her gaze back to Sawyer. "I think you could pull off pink. Cotton candy if you want to go for that sweet and innocent look. Hot pink if you're a bit of a bad-ass." She didn't know Sawyer. Maybe had seen her in passing before now, but nothing memorable. "But that's my opinion," she added with a shrug.

She continued the dribble, getting the feel for the ball. "So, we playing one-on-one, or something else?"

When the girl actually responded, Sawyer took a minute to wonder if she was actually being serious or her sarcasm was just as complex, if not more than the tiny brunette. She shook her head and waited for the blue-haired girl to get close.

Her question brought a shrug to the voice mimic. "Whatever. I'm good with anything." She answered before attempting to steal the ball.

Katya was good at sarcasm, though that was usually reserved for use against her mother. But she was fine with Sawyer taking the remark either way. If she wanted dye advice, or even someone to help with it, she was more than willing to offer it. But only if asked.

The steal was an easy one as Katya hadn't been paying much mind to the fact that they were actually playing now. "One-on-one it is then," she replied, positioning herself between Sawyer and the basket. She wasn't confident that she'd recover the ball, but she was going to try.

"So," she continued. "Do you play on a team?"

Pablo had some homework to do, but he didn’t feel like cooping himself in his room. He figured the gym wouldn’t be in use, since there was no gym classes around this time, but he was wrong. He should’ve turned tail the moment he heard a basketball bounce on the hard, wooden floor, but he was curious.

Shifting his books to one arm, he used the other to pull open the door that took him into the gym. Since when did girls like basketball, that was his question. He raised his brow, playing around with the idea that they were lesbians. He hoped not, because that made girls less relatable. On the other hand...

“Hi guys! I mean girls. Unless you don’t mind being called guys…” he said, walking up to them with a great big smile on his face as he secretly tried to find out if they were in fact lesbians. That way he could be the one to tell the whole school the juicy news. It wasn’t healthy being closeted. He would be doing them a favor.

“I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.” Not.

Acquiring the ball, Sawyer slowly bounced it from one hand to the other, calculating her moves so that she could get to the basket. She could very well just jump and shoot the ball from where she was. Granted, the girl was way taller than her and could easily swat the ball from her. But if she ducked under, it would be predictable and much easier for the blue-haired girl to intercept.

Sawyer shrugged at her question. "Not much of a team player. And if you couldn't tell, I'm a little too small to be on the team." With her five foot two build, the only sport for her was gymnastics and even then, it was hard to find a good program in Vermont. Or one that sponsored a meta orphan.

Her parents would have a field day if they ever knew she considered herself an orphan.

Another voice from behind her made her turn. The guy's greeting was pretty awkward and she smirked slightly. Tucking the ball under her arm, she pushed a lock of hair that had plastered itself on her forehead. "You don't have to be PC around here. I mean really...it's a school for metas. We should all be past that."

"So no formal teams. Alright," she gave a nod with a thoughtful roll of the eyes. She would have mentioned that height shouldn't matter if one is good at something. Especially if pitted against someone like Katya herself that wasn't as great at the sport in the first place. Her face had scrunched, and she'd prepped to respond to whatever offensive move Sawyer decided to go with when Pablo spoke.

She straightened now to look at him, her own amused smirk crossing her face as Sawyer responded. "Yeah, I don't care. I've been called 'dude', 'guy', 'gal', 'you with the hair'," she raked her fingers through her hair and let her hands settle loosely on her hips.

Pablo definitely did interrupt something. Whether it was a romantic thing or not was debatable, but they definitely were in the middle of a basketball game. Oh well! Hopefully they wouldn't ask him to play, because he was terrible, nor did he like it. Or any sports for that matter.

He quirked his eyebrows in confusion at the brown-haired girl. "PC...?" he said out-loud. Was that even a word, or just another one of those American phrases that were lost on him? It didn't matter, though. "I'm glad no one cares, then. I wish all guys were as secure as you girls. I swear, call them a girl and they go nuts." Not Pablo, though. "Well I guess I should let you guys get back to your game... I'll just be doing my homework over here." He pointed to the empty corner of the gym.

"Nope. No formal teams." Sawyer repeated, deliberately using the other girl's voice against herself. She was getting better with her control, which might actually mean she could leave this place sooner rather than later.

She did laugh a little when her companion answered the boy's question. "Politically correct? Uh...are you not from here? Am I talking too fast for you?" She asked with a raise of an eyebrow.

"They go nuts because they can't fathom the idea of not being able to control their emotions when it's the time of the month." She shrugged before looking up in the direction of where the boy was pointing.

"You do that." Sawyer responded with a roll of her eyes, not entirely sure why people always had the need to tell other people what they were going to do. Especially people they didn't even know.

"Okay, blueberry shortcake. Let's dance." Sawyer bounced the ball against the basketball court and faked left before shooting the ball into the net. It rolled around the net a little bit before dropping through, into her hands once more. "And that is how you do it." She smugly said with a little bow.

"I could do this all day, unless you think you can steal this ball from me?" She challenged the other girl with a smirk.

To say that hearing her own voice from another wasn't unnerving would have been a lie, it was. Even if they hadn't been metas. While she loved comedic impressions of celebrities, this was a different story. But she said nothing, and instead let out a chuckle just before they returned to their game.

"Let's see what you're made of, dynamite," she retorted, jogging over to face off with Sawyer again. Hey, if Sawyer was gonna give her a nickname, it was only befitting to bestow one of her own. Katya crouched slightly, and waited for what seemed like the perfect opportunity to attempt to snatch the ball away from her petite companion.
