The Basics
Name: Zebadiah Derrick Hayes
Nicknames: Zeb
Age: 30
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Housing Staff/Live-in Dorm Monitor
Powers: Dream Telepathy/Manipulation
Zeb has the ability to enter another person’s dreams. He can observe and manipulate their dreams. He can also read a person’s mind while they are dreaming. But he can only tell what the person is thinking or feeling within the dream. For example if someone is having a dream about eating dinner with their father, he can learn how the person feels and thinks about their father. By changing the dream, he can learn different things, but it can become a bit of a guessing game. Although the telepathy part of his power is involuntary, he has control over whether of not he enters someone’s dreams in the first place. He’s “reach” extends to about the size of one floor of the dorms at Hammel and the rooms directly above or below him. Although he can sense that someone is having an intense dream (usually a very vivid and disturbing nightmare) over a longer distance, he cannot enter the dream unless he physically close enough to the other person.
Zeb’s own dreams are either very disturbing nightmares or extremely ridiculous, with no in-between “normal” dreams. One of the side-effects of this power is that he has hallucinogenic flashes of these dreams during his waking hours. These images are usually from his more ridicules dreams, such as a goat wearing a top-hat and a monocle, but from time to time he does have flashes from his more violent dreams.
Zeb also suffers the morning after using his powers, with feelings similar to a hangover. He also suffers from insomnia although usually his sleepless nights are more from trying to avoid his dreams than from an inability to fall asleep.

The Details
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Blue/Grey (depends on the light/shirt he’s wearing)
Any Piercings? None
Any Tattoos? He currently has three, all of them are lines of poetry. “Is all that we see or seem/But a dream within a dream?” (Edgar Allen Poe) is on his right bicep. “The houses are haunted/By white night-gowns.” (Wallace Stevens) is on his left bicep. And “nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals/the power of your intense fragility” is across his back, just below where his shirt collar line covers.
Any Scars? Yes. When Zeb was four he ran though a glass door. He had three scars from it. Two long ones on his right are. And one on his stomach where he was stuck super-man style. He got forty-two stitches in all.
General Appearance: Zeb dresses in what he considers “classy-comfort”. Meaning that while he is usually seen wearing a nice, button-up dress shirt, it is usually loose fitting and always overtop of a t-shirt with a high thread count. Throughout the course of a normal day the dress shirt will get unbuttoned and eventually discarded completely by the evening. In his mind, this mode of dressing makes him approachable by students, peer, and colleagues alike. Likewise, he keeps his hair a tad messy and wears constant stubble. Although his facial hair never gets quite long enough to be actually considered a real moustache or beard, he feels it helps him to look older and perhaps a tad more charming.
Although Zeb keeps in good physical shape, he’s not exactly muscular. When he’s not sleeping well it shows in and around his eyes. He’s always hated this fact because he feels it conflicts with the business/casual appearance that he works hard to keep up with.
Personality: Zeb thrives off of helping others. Whether it’s settling a dispute, giving advice, or just being there to listen; he tries to always be available. Although he majored in Psychology at college he doesn’t bring it up often to avoid people thinking he’s treating them as some sort of patient. Still his studies come in handy, and he has nothing personal against the profession.
His need to always be there for others tends to get the best of him because he has trouble knowing when and how to find time for himself. He often ignores how draining it can become and burns out every now and then. There is only a short list of people that Zeb feels like he can turn to with his own issues. He thinks he should be able to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders and is often upset by the fact that he can’t.
Zeb is also extremely overprotective of the people he cares about, especially his sister. He has zero tolerance for any sort of bullying or sarcastic joking towards others. Often, he takes harmless joking a little too seriously, more so when it is directed at others than towards himself. In the case of his sister, he also has trouble trusting anyone who express interest in her in a romantic way. He is slow to trust them to be alone with her, or that in the end they won’t hurt his sister in some way. Although some of these feelings may stem from jealousy that they are taking his sister away from him, he also believes it’s his job as her brother to be on the constant lookout for her.
When it comes to women, especially those he’s interested in, Zeb is the picture of a gentleman. He’s not interested in one-night stands, but instead is on the constant lookout to find “the one”. He’s a hopeless romantic when it comes to that sort of topic. And although his romantic gestures sometimes border on cheesy or cliché, they are always genuine.
Zeb is not a morning person at all. It’s best not to try talking to him until he’s had his first cup of coffee. He doesn’t drink (except a glass of wine now and then with dinner on special occasions) but he can often be seen smoking a corncob pipe on sleepless nights.

History
Zeb was born fifteen minutes before his twin sister, Aliyah. Their father always joked that those were Zeb” 15 minutes of fame”. Although their parents tried not to play favorite, it was clear from an early age that Zeb wanted to grow up to be just like his father. Although Rhett Hayes was not an extremely wealthy man or important man in LA where they lived, he was respected and a true gentleman. And Zeb tried his best to be just like him. From an early age, Zeb was told that it was his job to look out for his sister. He took the role quite literally, often getting into fights in grade school with other boys over his sister. The two siblings were often seen side-by-side and Zeb always felt like she was the best friend he would ever have.
The two siblings found out of their meta status from a blood test during a routine doctor visit. Although they had not manifested with powers at the time, Hammel recruiters believed it was only a matter of time so they siblings became students there. They explained to Zeb and Aliyah’s parents that sometimes the manifestation could be dangerous. So the early move was in their best interest. Zeb didn’t mind, in fact he was excited. First off, he was immediately obsessed with the idea that he and his sister might be a gestalt pair. Secondly, as long as his sister was with him, he saw the entire experience as one great adventure.
Things changed when his powers started showing up though.
At first it just started as really bizarre dreams. Then he realized they weren’t even his dreams to begin with. He tried to keep the fact that he could understand what they person was thinking and feeling during the dream because he was afraid what they other students would think. But eventually he let something slip that he shouldn’t have known about and word spread. Still that wasn’t the worst of it. Zeb was also having a lot of nightmares himself and without proper control, he often accidentally manipulated other people’s dreams to be nightmares as well. His hallucinogenic flashes from dreams only helped to seal the deal that he was not someone to be best buds with. The other students started to distance themselves from him. No one wanted to spend time with him, or worse sleep close to Zeb’s bedroom. As always, Zeb turned to his sister.
During the last few years at Hammel, as he developed more control over his ability, his luck with his peers increased. But even though he made friends easier, he still remained close to his sister. The other students found that Zeb was a person whom they could always turn to when they were in need. But even after the other students began to open up to Zeb, he always found it hard. Instead he continued to turn to his sister.
Of course it was a little easier to open up to girls, especially once he was romantically interested in. He had several girlfriends during his time at Hammel. He treated them like princess, as his father had taught him. And although he was madly in love with each of them, not of his relationships were all that serious, or long-lasting.
After graduation he attended college. It was his plan that after receiving a Bachelors degree in Psychology he would return to Hammel with the hopes of finding a job there. He felt it would be right to work there and give help to the students, just as his teachers and mentors had helped him over the years. And by taking night classes or on-line courses he could still continue his education while working at Hammel.
Of course, he was delighted to have his sister alongside him at college. Although she wasn’t planning to make the move back to Pilot Ridge, he tried to convince her to join him. During the end of freshman year, Zeb met Christina. He was certain that she was “the one” and by sophomore year he had their whole life planned out. Sadly, he couldn’t see how completely one-sized their relationship was. While Zeb was devoted and ready to do anything for Christina, she wasn’t so committed. After a year and a half, Zeb proposed. He was completely heartbroken to find out that the girl of his dreams did not feel the same way that he did. This event only futher proved to him how much he depended on his sister to steady him through his life. And while he longed more than ever to return to Pilot Ridge, just for a change of scenery and a renewed purpose to get Christina off his mind he knew it wouldn’t be the same without Aliyah with him. So he renewed his efforts to convince his sister to join him. Not only because he needed her, but also because he wanted to be able to be there for her as well.
But when Zeb returned to Hammel after college graduation, his sister chose not to join him. Although he did well at his job and starting what he felt was his purpose in life, he still missed his sister. Although they kept in touch, he never felt it was the same without her physically with him. Finally after working at Hammel for two year, Aliyah made the decision to join it. Whether it because of his constant pleading or something else, he wasn’t too sure but he was pleased nonetheless.
