Shane looked around the falling down house, it needed some work for sure but it defiantly fit the style he and Cat shared. Clapping he got Cat’s attention and smiled with thumbs up. They’d just barely graduated and both decided to share a house off campus for college, it was cheaper and smarter that way. Shane had been working with a renovation company for a few months now and thought it would be nice to have a project to use his new knowledge on.
Shane went out to help Cat bring another box of books in with a grin, his first project after repairing the kitchen sink was to build floor to ceiling bookcases in the living room. Between their combined collections the entire room would become a shrine for book lovers.

Shane dropped his bag in the hallway, already the house had taken such a turn towards being a home. Sure he’d had to call in help several times with several projects but atleast everything was now up todate and clean. Shane smiled smelling good cooking from the kitchen, slipping through the library/livingroom Shane paused in the archway to the kitchen and smiled watching Cat dance around the kitchen a book in one hand a wooden spoon in another. Shaking his head Shane wrapped his arms around Cat to lean around her, stealing the spoon as he moved to stir the bubbling pot infront of her. He released almost as quickly as he’d embraced her already hands gently scolding her.

Shane woke from a dead sleep to his phone going off. A number he didn’t recognize flashed on his screen making him frown. 2am waiting for his phone to chirm with a voice mail Shane eased a gentle pressure on his ear to hear the long message.
This message is for Mr. Williams, this is Maria Henderson at Seattle’s Swedish Medical Center… we are calling on behalf of Kennedy and Marianne Williams you are listed as an emergency contact, if you can give me a call back at 253-xxx-xxxx…
The Shane was frantic as he stumbled from bed and burst into Cat’s, he cared not for rules as he dialed the number and handed the phone to his startled friend. His face was filled with fear as he cursed his lack of speech. His ear rang as he heard the woman on the other side of the phone explain there had been an accident. That night Shane slept beside Cat trembling in his sleep, waiting for dawn when he could fly home to his parents.

Graduation day, Shane smiled at Cat as they both fumbled around the house, they were graduating today he could hardly believe it. Laughing Shane was once again startled to hear noise escape from his mouth causing Cat to laugh at him. He never seemed to mind when she laughed at him unlike anyone else. He still couldn’t make the noises organize to words but then again the surgery was still healing.. the doctors predicted he’d be able to talk one day.. if nothing else at least now Shane could alert people.
Are you ready? Mom and Dad are meeting us there, they want to take us out to dinner afterward… I remember to tell you that right? Shane held out his arm for her to take feeling his chest tighten. It had been growing steadily since the night of his parents accident. Shane couldn’t get her out of his head… he was trying hard to hide the feelings he’d developed for his best friend, for it was far to costly to express them. Shane opened her door for her and helped her in his car. With a smile he reminded himself it was better this way, besides that guy… Chris was it? Cat had an interest in him and he could support her better than Shane. Shane clenched his jaw, if Chris ever hurt her though that guy would pay for every tear she might shed. Taking a deep breath Shane got in the car and they headed for the ceremony, Cat trying to convince him not make her go through it all.
