The BasicsName: Ray Kelly Miller.
Nicknames: Ray.
Age: 17.
Orientation: Heterosexual.
Desired Rank/Job: Student.
Powers: Size Alteration.
Size alteration is split into two subsets, the ability to make oneself grow and the ability to make oneself shrink. Ray generates certain subatomic particles which interact with electrical impulses in his brain to generate a reducing or enlarging field just about his person. The field can extend to certain tight fitting clothing or slightly looser clothing with much more concentration and less size change. When his power is activated he may reduce or enlarge his entire person at a uniform rate, meaning he cannot grow one part without proportionality growing everything else. During the transformation Ray's cellular and molecular structure is slightly modified providing him increased strength and stability at large sizes, and increased durability and agility at smaller sizes. The mass gained or lost during his transformations may be linked to mass "shunting" view Einstein-Rosen bridges, in essence his mass gained or lost is simply sent to or received from far elsewhere in space.
His power is not without it's downsides though. Physically transformations will begin to have a wear on Ray's body. Constant restructure at the molecular and cellular level leaves wear on sensitive joints and his bones, as well as muscle damage and even some brain damage over long periods of time. Additionally he experiences a symptom known as "shift shock." When shifting to rapidly, from too great a size disparity, or if not returning to his normal size after long periods of time Ray will suffer from symptoms akin to withdrawal symptoms. To many rapid shifts or too great a size change may cause him to pass out from the bodily strain. If he remains too long outside of his normal size he will begin to shift back and it would take considerable strain to attempt at stay at his size.

General Appearance:
Ray is a typical teenage boy, at seventeen years old he's finally popped up on the right side of puberty and is truly coming into his adult self. Bodily, he is a thin athletic build, he doesn't pay too much attention to working out but he does enjoy going on a run from time to time. He appears lanky at 5'10" and his awkward stance and gait often cause him to be overlooked from time to time. Though he has probably reached his adult height his body is still filling out and perhaps someday he'll trade his awkward teenage form for a strong confident one.
He has dark hair and eyes, traits from his father. His hair is normally a wild mess and the shadow of facial hair begins to creep upon his cheeks if he isn't meticulous. His eyes are large and expressive, even more so his toothy grin. He isn't bad looking but all the same he feels self conscious from what he perceives as his crooked nose and large ears. He is quick to laugh and grin, which shines all the way up to his eye but just as quick to keep to himself, keep his gaze averted downward hiding and obscuring his features.
is wardrobe is whatever clothing he can manage to scrounge up. He isn't exactly the most fashion forward teenager and happens to wear just whatever is available. He is fond of simple t-shirts, thin long sleeve shirts, and of course hoodies. He has a steady supply of worn jeans and alternates between pairs of skate shoes and a ratty old pair of converse he has yet to replace. He is supposed to wear glasses all the time but he rarely does aside from when he's reading.
Personality:
Ray is a somewhat introverted guy. He's very bright and can be sociable but there are many times that he simply prefers to be on his own with a good book or just watching a movie or playing a game. He isn't the type of guy to head out to every party but he can be convinced with a few good friends. On most nights however he prefers to be on his own working through a problem which has engaged his interest. Though sociable sometimes he still does retain a bit of an awkward demeanor and some uncertainty when talking with those he isn't all too familiar with. All the same when nervous he is known to crack awful jokes and can be quite funny among his friends.
He is very intuitive when solving problems or addressing situations. Typically considered to be a gifted thinker and a good student Ray puts more stock in his gut from time to time. A lot of math and science comes easily to him as the systems make sense to him intutitvley. Additionally when confronted with any sort of mystery or problem he finds it easy for him to piece together clues and observations. The downside of this however is it leaves him rather single minded when pursing a goal and can cause him to brush away others' opinions.
For all his introversion and single mindedness Ray is a sympathetic teenager. He will easily involve himself in matters that engage his sympathy whether that be standing up for others or simply helping someone who dropped their books. He does think of himself as a rational thinker more likely to follow his brain than his heart but in truth he quickly jumps up to help others even when it's not necessarily the "smart" thing to do. Though he tries to remain impartial and rational there are times he can be swayed by emotional words and the plight of others. This aptitude towards feeling leads to him having a great sense of responsibility and taking on the woes of the world.
On a final note Ray is a pretty adaptable teenager. Though he has some tendencies to making sure things stay ordered and neat within his life he is highly flexible and can adapt to most situations. When he finds himself caught up thinking about things he can easily forget about tasks for days or weeks at a time. He prefers things to remain relatively stable and familiar but when change starts coming in he's ready to flow right along with it.Your Vices

Artemis, 3, CatHistoryNatalie Fields was 26 years old when she first started getting serious with Jack Miller. She had dated his younger brother Sam for three years before the young man had gone off to join the Air Force. Now, Jack and Natalie were an odd couple. Jack was a mechanic who owned his own shop, "Miller Automotive" and a high school dropout. The previous year he had dumped his girlfriend after she had exclaimed that she was pregnant with his child. Natalie was a bright young woman, an engineering graduate and had worked as a mechanical engineer at a major airplane production facility for Boeing for just over three years. In the heartbreak of her former love Sam Miller running off to the Air Force, his rough around the edges older brother Jack had been there to comfort her, for reasons beyond all logic she fell in love with the man, and the two would have a few interesting years ahead of themselves.
In their hometown of Boston, Massachusetts when Natalie was 28 and Jack, 30, they had an unexpected surprise in the form of little Ray. Jack trying to do the right thing married Natalie and intended to be a father, but his resolve to do so would wear away quickly. While during his formative years Natalie was a doting parent, Jack proved to be less reliable. Jack could be often be found drinking or gambling rather than in the company of his young wife and son. He still had to pay for the care of his other son, Jack Jr. and he had found that family life was quite restraining. To make ends meet he was selling drugs on the side, in addition to doing them himself. He wasn't ready to give up the parties and excitement of a young man for the responsibilities of an older man.
Sam Miller returned from the Air Force and worked with his brother at the autoshop and did his best to try and get his brother to act responsibly while simultaneously looking after Natalie, Ray, and Jack Jr. He was disappointed about all that happened while he was gone but he accepted Natalie's choices and did his best to help everyone. When Ray was 5 years old Natalie was (unexpectedly) pregnant again. Unfortunately Jack was indicted on drug charges and sent to prison at the peak of her pregnancy. Divorce papers soon followed as did the birth of Ray's little sister Sarah. Sam was there for the family the entire time, a rock for everyone during the trying events. When Jack Jr.'s mother died of an overdose the following year Sam took it upon himself to raise the child as his own, while still managing to be close to Natalie, Ray, and Sarah.
Natalie moved with her children a half hour away from busy Boston to the smaller Newton, Massachusetts, just in time for Ray to begin school. Ray's childhood was certainly an average one. He went to school excelled in many ways and always had his mother to support him as well as his Uncle Sam acting as a father figure. He did see his father Jack a few times while he was on parole but it wouldn't be long before the man was back in prison time and again.
In school Ray developed an affinity to sciences and mathematics. He had a penchant for critical thinking problems though he seemed to be just a bit reclusive and quiet. His teachers would note his keen insight and observation but expressed concern for his quiet, reserved nature (hypothesizing that it was caused by the absence of his father). Ray's Uncle Sam encouraged his academic endeavors, personally paying for him to attend certain summer programs and helping make things easier for Natalie and her children. Ray did feel a sort of animosity towards his father throughout his childhood but if there was one thing his Uncle Sam taught him it was; destiny does not decide a man's fate, his choices do. Ray did his best to live by this creed and did what he could for his mother and his sister.
When Ray was 14 he was visiting a physics symposium with the rest of his class from Newton High. A magnetic reactor, and particle accelerator were the main events of the day. As the students all hovered around the glass there was a slight technical error in the machine. While his class filed out Ray approached the glass in time to see the reactor blow and the air light with a plasma spark. In the stress of the moment his latent powers manifested and he shrunk down to two inches tall. Amid the chaos no one noticed the missing teenager as he had a particularly harrowing experience with stampeding feet, debris, and a few cockroaches. Ray managed to finally return to his normal height, hesitant about who to tell about this experience. He eventually approached his Uncle and confided in him. His Uncle was supportive but was honestly uncertain of what to do at first.
Sam suggested it would be better if Ray didn't reveal his nature to his mother and sister, at least not just yet. For several weeks Ray tried to simply forget about the occurrence. The incident appeared in several papers and news outlets but it soon faded away and he was certain no one was any the wiser. At some point, out of the blue Ray arrived home to find a man sitting down and talking with his mother... about him. Fear flooded through way, certain that this man was a government agent there to take him away, dissect him and study him. The recruiter reassured him that was not the case when Ray shot accusations his way, instead proclaiming he was a recruiter for Hammel Institute.
The family, his mother, sister, and his Uncle sat down and discussed what was next for Ray. They were assured that Hammel would be the best choice for the teenager, as it was likely his shifting would occur again. The Institute and it's programs were explained in full to the family and before long Ray's bags were packed and he was headed off to Vermont.
For two and a half years Ray has gone to Hammel doing his best to hone his abilities and just live a normal life. He doesn't yet know what he wants from life but if what his Uncle says it's true, it's his choices that will decide that.Roleplay Example
Jimi hurriedly rushed through the halls and towards classroom eleven. He had just been out near the quidditch pitch experimenting with some brooms, trying to do a little reverse-spellcraft on an old comet 240 to determine the list of charms the broom was enchanted with. He had a short list of spells to be researched scrawled on a piece of parchment and for all his trouble he had bits of charred splinters stuck to his robes.
All the same the Ravenclaw boy was exceptionally excited for the charms club meeting. Charms was his favorite subject and he hoped to learn some more as well as perhaps teach a few others. As a wandmaker hopeful Jimi hoped to learn a bit more enchanting and a lot more about spellcraft. He waltzed into the classroom and spotted the club leader. He was early, excellent! He offered her a warms smile before plopping down in a seat.
"Hello! My name is Jimi, I guess I'm here for the meeting today."
