“It was not me, Richard. Hassan and Tamali have been teaching the cockatoo to swear again. You know how children are.”
Ah, I see. How are things at home? Is your husband showing any improvement?
“He has spinal muscular atrophy; that isn't something you get better from. He is happy enough though. He has had a desk put into the spare room, what was Aalia's bedroom. He wont be able to work properly again like he used to, but the little he is doing now is better than nothing. It keeps him busy, and he's happier when he's busy.”
It is such a shame that he got sick like that, right at the height of his career too.
“Yes, it was a real shock to us all. Him especially. It has brought him closer to the children though; they barely saw him before. Little Hassan hardly knew him at all. As hard as it has been, I think we are all grateful that it has brought us closer together.”
I can imagine. How long has it been now? You started working with us not long after he was diagnosed, if I remember correctly?
“Yes, that's right. I'd never worked a day in my life before despite going to college, then Manish got sick and I had little choice. It's been twelve years now, if my calculations are right.”
Twelve years, wow! I didn't realise it had been quite so long.
*laughs* “It often feels longer. You know, I haven't had a proper break in almost a year.”
I know, Seema. Once you are back from your next assignment we can talk about you having some time off to be with your family.
“I would appreciate that, Richard. Where is my next assignment?”
