The Basics
Name: Rafael Vincente Soto Vega
Nicknames: Rafi
Age: 20
Orientation: Homosecual
Desired Rank/Job: College Student
Powers: Reanimation - Rafi can bring the dead back to life. However there are many limitations to his power. Rafi cannot heal, only bring back to life. Therefore, if a person has died due to outrageous injuries, it is very likely that Rafi cannot actually reanimate them. Similarly, if a disease has killed them, if Rafi brings them back to life they will still have their affliction. Rafael can only reanimate the freshly dead. Once decomposition sets in, Rafael cannot reanimate. The process only works once. If a person dies again, Rafael cannot reanimate them for a second time. The process itself has side effects. Depending on the complexity of the creature he is reanimating, Rafel experiences varying levels of fatigue and drowsiness after reanimating. In addition, Rafi briefly experiences the pain felt while dying (if any) while reanimating.
Rafael is expected to have a decreased lifespan due to the nature of his ability. He is essentially giving some of his life back to somebody else. The years he will loose cannot be calculated exactly, but the more he uses his power the shorter his life will be.

none

a sugar skull tattoo on each of his middle fingers (looks like an intracate ring from a distance)

General Appearance: Rafael is 5'9" and skinny with a head of shaggy brown hair. When he first came to Vermont, he was so tiny that he had to go to the doctor daily to make sure he was getting enough food. He still remains very skinny, but is much healthier looking now. His cheekbones are full and he has gained quite a bit of muscle. He has two tattoos, matching sugar skulls on his middle fingers.
Personality: Rafael is a fairly naive, yet very wise individual. Rafael was born into a Christian family, and his grandmother taught him a lot about his faith. While he isn't 100% sure he believes in 'God' as described in the Christian bible, Rafael is a very spiritual individual who is constantly looking for answers and doing good for his belief in some higher power. Rafael doesn't get mad or upset easily - most likely due to the tragedies he faced as a child, as well as the environment he grew up in. Because of how poor he was as a child, Rafael is thankful for every single thing he has, and every single opportunity he is presented with. He is hard working and always trying to do something more to help.
Rafi is overly trusting of others. He sees the good in everything, and everyone. Even with all the crime he was surrounded with, Rafael was taught to see the good in the world. While it had made him kind, it has also made him nieve and overly trustworthy.
Rafael isn't very intelligent, however. He stayed at Hammel an extra two years to graduate. The language barrier he faces as well as the fact that he hadn't been in school since age 7 made learning difficult for Rafael. It still is difficult, but he is trying to learn everything he can.

History
Rafael was born to a very young mother in a little shack outside of Chihuahua, Mexico. He never had much, and never expected much. However the love his mother had for him was infinite, and turned Rafi into the loving, caring, calm individual he is today. Rafael would do anything in the world to make his mother happy. His grandmother also played a crucial role in his upbringing. She brought him to church every Sunday, and said his prayers with him at night.
Rafael's father was not around much, however it wasn't because he was a bad father or husband. The town they lived in was incredibly poor, and incredibly dangerous. Sometimes, Rafi's father would be gone for weeks at a time, only showing up to have dinner one night, and leave again for work. When Rafael was 7, Ramon was killed in a shooting in the City. Rafael didn't cry. He hadn't really known his father.
From the day his dad died, Rafeal skipped school to work in a factory in the city. His mother got a job, too, so they could keep their house and take care of Rafi's ailing grandmother. On Rafael's 10th birthday, Manuela passed. Again, Rafi did not cry. He was expecting it.
Estefania became pregnant again a few years after. She gave birth to a daughter - Adalina. Rafael does not know his sister's father, and sometimes wonders if his mother knows. He doesn't ask many questions though. He cared for Adalina more than anything in the world.
One night when she was two, Lina was playing outside, and found her way to the wash bucket behind the little house they lived in. She fell in, and hit her head. By the time Estefania made her way out back to check on her daughter, she was dead. Again, Rafi did not cry - though this time it was out of shock. He found himself hovering over his sister's body, blue from lack of oxygen. He reached out and took her by the shoulders. His mother was crying hysterically behind him, and all he could think to do was pray. So he prayed like his grandmother had taught him. He squeezed his eyes shut, and prayed that it wasn't true- that his sister weren't dead after all. That is was a strange nightmare and that the little girl would awaken. Suddenly, Rafael felt a painful constricting in his chest, like he too was drowning. He didn't let go of his sister as his vision faded, and he was overwhelmed by the feeling of breathlessness.
He blacked out shortly after due to his own lack of oxygen. But when he came to, he was surrounded by members of the village as well as his mother rocking his crying sister in his arms. He was deemed a miracle worker by the townspeople. He too believed that he had been blessed by god, who decided he was worth to carry out such a miraculous act. 3 days later a recruiter came and took him to Hammel. He had little to no understanding of what meta-humans were. Leaving his family wasn't easy, but the people told him he must learn to harness the ability he'd used to save his sister. He thought they were taking him to a monastery to become a priest. He was 15.
Rafael struggled in school. While he had always kept his faith, the things he learned challenged what he had been taught. Learning at Hammel made Rafi look at the world in a new light. He quickly learned things about people and social structures. He quickly learned about meta-humans in general as well, as he became fascinated with the concept. Rafi struggled academically though. Because he hadn't been in school since he was 7, Rafael was behind academically on top of dealing with the language barrier he was faced with. It took Rafael about 2 years more than most to graduate.
Now 20, Rafael isn't 100% sure what to do with his life. He has enrolled in community college, and trying to find a way to bring his family up to the United States where he has found so much knowledge opportunity. He only talks to his mother and sister through letters, and visits them once at Christmas, if he can save up enough money. He works mostly doing odd jobs for elderly neighbors (for very low fees), and sometimes finds himself waiting tables at a restaurant a few months before christmas in hopes of making it to Mexico for the holidays.
