#44 Together
“Fi! Come look!”
Two girls stood in a room, not much bigger than a closet, but in the back of the room was a window. And beyond that window? The view of the city. Neon lights flashed green, gold, red, and blue. The nightlife of Miami was absolutely beautiful. The city had character, and it was something they loved. But today, they had a music festival going on in the streets. People were dancing, laughing, and all Ivy knew was that she wanted to be a part of it.
“Yeah?” Sofia moved to stand on the stool beside the elder twin, her hand instinctively moving to pull away the hair that was no longer there, from her face. It had been a week since Ivy had cut the youngest twin’s hair to a pixie. It was oddly liberating for the twelve year old to not have to worry about the issues associated with having long hair; that, and getting ready in the morning was a breeze. Ivy turned to Sofia, pointing with an excited grin toward the streets below their third story apartment.
“Look at all the people and the lights! Look at how much fun they are having, Fi!” It was inspiring to see people with that much joy. They rarely had any, but they craved it. They wanted to be able to walk outside and laugh and just play. Hand in hand they tried, and hand in hand they struggled. It was a difficult thing, but they both tried to stay optimistic.
Fi grabbed her elder twin’s hand, lacing their fingers together. “We’ll be happy like that one day. Just wait.” Sofia wasn’t the inspirational one, nor was she the strong one emotionally, but the blonde was absolutely sure that they would get away from this. They would get away from the horrors of home.
“Together?” Ivy breathed.
“Together.” Sofia responded.
