It wasn't often that someone would actually behave like many students would in the staff lounge. No, this behavior didn't revolve around gossiping or flirting with someone. Even adults did that. Playing World of Warcraft on staff computers when game playing of that type wasn't allowed certainly tip toed on the lines of breaking the rules. However there was no rule suggesting that someone couldn't mirror download a game so that it could be played without necessarily having all the files downloaded. It was borderline illegal. But this person seemed to know all of the loopholes in which to get away with this activity. After all, who better to know how to get around rules than staff?
"Look, look, I'm just saying. I can shout my way through this. Just keep healing me," a feminine voice said with a hint of aggravation. Whomever this woman was playing with wasn't listening to her. A team of players, along with the female in the staff room, were all attempting to clear a dungeon. The female in question was trying to be a glory hog and use herself as a tank in order to beat the mystery monster all by herself versus utilizing a complete team. Sweat drops formed on her forehead. Furious clicking of a mouse and tapping of computer keys erupted from the keyboard and mouse. She was really getting into this game. Her body even moved with each click of the mouse.
She grit her teeth. "I'm not listening to that. We don't need a plan we just need to-" Her words ceased. She was getting angrier and angrier by the second which was why she couldn't finish her sentence. Her teammates stopped healing her. So, instead of being a mature adult about the situation she sabotaged the entire mission or, in this case, dungeon raid. "Time's up lets do this! BRILLIANNNNNNNNCE GIDEON!" Her shout was something similar to a Youtube video she saw not too long long featuring a man named Leroy Jenkins. That guy did the same thing she just did. Instead of just sticking to the plan and not being a team killer she resorted to running in all by herself to fight the monster and basically ruining her team's chances of any kind of success.
Brilliance smiled as her whole team, including herself, were wiped out one by one. The headset she had on her ears was pulled off. When she lay it upon the table one could easily hear the sea of insults coming from it. That woman was called everything but a human being. She laughed with an evil glare that went across her face. Brilliance whispered, "Shoulda just let me have my way. Now nobody will finish the raid." Those words were followed a bit of a snicker. It wasn't just a normal one either but one those snickers that came from a kid who just stole from the candy jar while putting crazy glue on someone's fingers while they slept. Brilliance was known to be childish but her ways were getting worse. It was almost as if her hiatus from Hammel made her less of an adult. The truth was that the earlier sentence currently had some truth to it. She didn't seem like herself at all.
There wasn't any satisfaction. Normally warcraft playing made her calm her sense of wanting to do something. She was restless. There could be more research to do but there weren't many willing subjects to conduct research upon since so many were either afraid or annoyed by her. It was times like these where the professor would resort to fantasizing about how someone's power usage could be so much better. Time after time she had to be warned about her antics of following people and trying to get to know more about their powers. Brilliance understood that her research could be invaluable as far as understanding metahumans. However, she also understood that not many places outside of Hammel would put up with her personality.
The thing about her that made her so creepy sometimes was that she wished people didn't have powers and that the powers were personified. In other words its not the people that the powers are attached to that she was so obsessed with. Instead she was more attached to the powers themselves. This would be very similar to someone liking another person's clothing without necessarily liking the person. This was probably an insulting obsessive disorder in two ways. One, she didn't really care for interaction with others if talk of animation, video games and metahuman abilities were not the subject of conversation. Two, she doesn't even like metahumans at all. She just liked what they can do.
"Hmmm time to check out a profile," she said to herself. The professor turned her head over to a small pile of vanilla colored folders. Randomly she checked out students and even members of the staff to get a profile kept in the database. She wanted to pick power wielding folks at random because she figured it was the best way to tackle the problem of finding truth in her theory. Brilliance believed that one's personality had a lot to do with what powers they possess and/or how one's power manifests. Time and time again she saw that someone's powers manifested in time of need and/or a power type manifested due to what someone has witnessed, experienced or mentally projected in their mind.
For example, if what she theorizes were true, a pyromancer could have gained their powers in response to a house fire or that person could have ended up becoming a pyromancer in part to their fiery personality. Now, of course, this was only a theory. But if proven to be even twenty percent correct this could potentially change the understanding of metahumans forever. This research could help places like the Hammel Institution on classifying metahumans who were problems and even assist the government in isolating metahumans who posed significant threats. Not to mention that knowing someone's personality has something to do with their abilities or vice versa in some cases could even assist in therapy of both the mental and physical kind. Alas, this wasn't just for the world's benefit and certainly wasn't for the benefit of metahumans like herself.
Many misunderstand Brilliance. She doesn't give a damn about people or their problems. Brilliance was just out for herself and her own glory. She wanted a Noble Peace Prize or a statue built in her honor. Nothing about anything she was doing was meant to help people. Instead it was meant as a way of potentially generating fame and money for herself. In truth Brilliance was only using Hammel to get what she needed from them. It was hard finding a laboratory that could furnish all of the equipment and resources she utilized and exhausted on a daily basis. Oh but she wasn't going to say anything about the reason why she was really here.
As she flipped through the piles of folders her eyes lit up with excitement. "Such a shame. If only I could do a sleep study on these people maybe I could manipulate power projection and even watch their sleep patterns to see if certain powers are still active even when in REM sleep," she said to herself. This was yet another theory she had. This was concerning the powers that were constant in nature. This referred to the powers that couldn't be turned off. For example a constant ability could be someone who has rock hard skin and would always have rock hard skin. That kind of ability doesn't have an off switch. Her theory on those types was that their powers directly affected the way those people thought. For example a person with said rock skin could sleep easier since they wouldn't have to worry about physical harm.
It wouldn't be ridiculous to suggest that someone who was impervious to most types of damage wouldn't have as many nightmares since their mind already knew not much was going to hurt them. She was so intrigued to find out if someone's powers could directly affect the way someone acted without that person necessarily knowing their brain and patterns of actions acted in such ways. She wanted to know if someone who mimicked the abilities of a cat realized that sometimes they might act like a cat would or would they have to have someone make them aware of this behavior. But since those types were rare in her opinion she put that theory on the back burner for now.
"I need a test subject," she said, with a sigh behind the words. No, what she needed was someone to help her dress. For goodness sakes a vomit green colored skirt with black shoes, a yellow shirt and a white lab jacket coupled with black framed glasses? She looked someone put a handful of bad taste of clothing in their hand and slapped her with it. Then again Brilliance was known to dress really bad. This was intentional. She figured that her brains and her superior wit as compared to some people was all needed to be dressed with. This was a metaphor of course. Oh but at the same time she really didn't care if someone didn't like her wardrobe. Way she saw it if someone didn't buy her clothes then they don't have a right to comment.
