The BasicsName: Riss Ziyi
Nicknames: Rissy
Age: 19 (30th March, 1995)
Orientation: Homosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Poison Detection; The ability to detect any type of poison instantly through taste. Even if a poison is very weak or seemingly undetectable, it registers as a disgusting taste in Ziyi's mouth. Her ability works for solid, liquid and gaseous poisons; gases like carbon monoxide will affect her very quickly. Liquor and drugs register as poisonous substances.
Limitations: For her ability to work, Ziyi has to taste what it is she thinks is poisonous. All poisons register as the same taste; utterly foul, so she cannot tell whether a poison is extremely dangerous, or something as mild as food poisoning. She has no immunity to poison, so anything she tries will affect her if it can through touch.
Side-effects: Due to everything vaguely poisonous registering as the same taste as something deadly, Ziyi is extremely picky with her food, and relatively nervous with eating new things. In highly urban areas, due to the sheer volume of pollutants present, Ziyi often feels unwell due to constantly being barraged with a variety of different toxic gases. If she spends too much time outdoors in a city- or worse still, stuck down in subway tunnels or the like- then her skin starts to react too, itching with a rash, especially on her cheeks and hands. Medical drugs often also register as poison, as they have artificial components.

Eye Color: Dark Brown
Any Piercings? One in each ear
Any Tattoos? Nope; one day maybe?
Any Scars? Nope
General Appearance: Riss is rather short, at 5'4, but she makes up for it most of the time by wearing the highest heels she can walk in. She has black hair that comes down to her shoulders; straight most of the time, but if she puts in some effort, she can get it nicely wavy. She has a few curves, and is not what you would call thin; just a regular weight, really. Her eyes are almond-shaped, and her skin what would be called 'olive'.
On a day-to-day basis, Riss generally keeps herself in pretty pristine condition. You probably won't find her without at least a layer of mascara and eyeliner, and a little foundation- although not so much to be noticeable. She's a big fan of hoop earrings, chic style and pretty accessories. A colour scheme is always a must, and even if she's not listening to music, a big pair of headphones regularly makes an appearance. Looking good is important to Riss.
Personality: Coarse-mannered | Blunt | Ambitious | Determined | Flirtatious | Arrogant
Despite her outwardly pleasant appearance and useful power, Riss isn't the nicest person to be around. Fiercely independent and set on getting places in life, she doesn't put her own goals aside for others. That doesn't mean she can't be kind once in a while- but she probably won't be too giving if she doesn't get anything back out of it. She speaks her mind and don't care what others think of her for it; making her opinion known settles her own mind, even if it frazzles others. She doesn't make a conscious effort to upset people, but sometimes just... does.
Although Riss is interested in girls, she's a tease towards men as well, often flirting with them outrageously just for the reaction, or her own twisted humour. It's all in good fun though, as she'll never lead them on too much. The fact that she's got a girlfriend (whether such a thing is true or not at the time) is bound to come blurting out sooner than later.Your VicesLikes: Fresh fruit, loud music, dancing, shoe shopping, open spaces (they don't set off her power)
Dislikes: Pushovers, cigarettes, tea, cheese, chemistry lessons
Strengths: Biology, independent, finding out gossip, staying up to stupid o'clock, mouthing along to music, studying
Weaknesses: Keeping gossip to herself, empathising, being kind, restraining from swearing, chemistry
Fears: Dying by poison and knowing it, being ignored, not getting anywhere in life
Secret: Riss is fascinated by botany; not that she would ever tell anyone of such a stupid hobby. She wonders if knowing more about the foods and plants she comes across, she might be able to use them to her advantage and reduce the amount of different substances she reacts to in the future, by working out which ones are 'poisonous'.Family TiesFather: Masara Ziyi
Mother: Aoma Ziyi (Maiden Name: Taka)
Siblings: None
Any Other Important People: She had a dog called Pom until she was 7; funnily enough, it was a pomeranian.HistoryRiss grew up in good old Manhattan, crushed into the city with a million other people. For the first decade of her life, she thought it was great; the big city, right at the heart of everything, with friends and shops and money and a pet and pretty much anything the world could offer her, if she took it. New York suited Riss down to the ground, and she easily fit in with her snarky attitude and drive. Of course, it got her into a bit of trouble here and there too, but nothing too bad, and she always had friends to back her up if she needed them for pretty much anything. Her grades weren't the greatest; merely average, but good enough for Riss.
Life was good, and Riss appreciated it. She liked a bit of adventure now and then when it came along, but other than that, she didn't mind a pretty normal life doing what everybody else did too.
Her poison detection power manifested itself at 14, and not in the best of ways. In short, there was a wild party one night- an apartment full of fourteen year olds, a crate of stolen alcohol from an older sibling, and a very sick Riss at the end of the night. Everyone had told her that alcohol tasted horrible, but you drunk it anyway for the feeling it gave you, so she tried to ignore the disgusting taste in her mouth it gave her- her power activating.
She managed to get through one bottle of beer, then spent a good two hours throwing it up in the bathroom, scorned by her friends for being a lightweight.
Riss thought- hoped- it'd be over by the next morning, when she had stayed over at her friend's house, but on waking up and leaving, she just found herself feeling sick as a duck all over again. The city isn't the greatest place to live when you react to every pollutant going, and New York, with all its car fumes and pollutants, definitely no longer was the right place for Riss to be. Her parents didn't understand it at all; Riss didn't dare tell them about the party for a day or two, then finally caved when she couldn't stand their confusion at why she had been so sick for two days. Of course, it wasn't a hangover that lasted so long- and a trip to the doctor came to no avail. Medicine just made her feel worse, and Riss was utterly miserable.
She only felt relief when, two days later (four days after the party), a recruiter found her. Manhattan had been busy that week, the only reason they hadn't picked her up sooner. Riss had never been happier to get out of the city once they explained what was going on. Her parents were less eager to let her go, but they couldn't easily up and take off out of the city, so had to face facts. Riss had always been a city girl, but she just couldn't live there any more.
When she made it to Vermont, Riss was utterly relieved, on a thousand different counts; understanding of what she was, why she was always unwell, and relief from the city's pollutants- and independence, from her parents, back in New York still. Suddenly she found she could do whatever she wanted, and loved it.
From there, it's a happy story. Five years at Hammel, and Riss is relatively happy in her place, and relatively well from day to day- unless someone's smoking nearby. She failed junior year, so had to re-take, but strangely wasn't that fussed. Riss always knew she wasn't the best of students.Roleplay ExampleJoining Soneya at the table, Lutis drew the book close to him before taking out the key and putting it nearby. Inspecting the book from all angles, he couldn’t see any evidence of wear and tear at all; if he hadn’t known it had been dragged out of a ruined building, he would have said that it was brand new, hot from the inker’s. Strange, really, to find a book in such good quality- even those in bookstores were rarely found in such a pristine condition. That was magic for you though; strange things happened.
He turned it over a few times before looking more closely at the lock. Just like the rest of it, perfectly clean, not a speck of dust or dirt in it. Frowning, he slid in the key- and was amazed to find it fit. And turned, too, although it was stiff and reluctant to turn properly. Lutis leaned close to the tome as he wrestled with the lock, not paying much attention to Soneya’s rustling of paper next to him. He hadn’t looked through the pages… they could be completely useless, or pure gold.
He let out a small puff of satisfaction as the lock clicked again and the key finally turned properly, the covers falling open onto the table. Then he gave a yell of horror as a poisonous looking armoured insect scuttled out, its fat tail raised high to strike with a huge needle on the end. Lutis knocked over his chair in an attempt to scramble back, grabbing hold of the book after a moment of dithering to smash it down on the scorpion’s back. A horrible series of crunching and clicking noises came from underneath the hardback as he pressed down firmly on it, grimacing at Soneya.
“Not sure this investigation lark’s such a good idea any more.” Even if it did mean they had found something now; whatever the creature was guarding inside the book, and Soneya’s thickly-scribbled upon page of notes. What About You?Name: Rogue
