Surprises? Yes, Oriel liked surprises. Well, he liked giving them. He didn't quite like them towards himself, though. Oriel was a man of habit....

Anyway, Oriel had planned this particular one for a while now, and was quite pleased with how his overgrown confection had turned out. It was perfect! Especially since it was for the birthday of one of his closest friends. Yes, he'd memorized when it was. No, he did not tell her he was coming over today. Though thinking back, Oriel probably should have at least told Tak to not make any plans or called her to make sure the tiny little momma was actually going to be hanging around today and not go off somewhere with someone he didn't like(like certain blonde whores he knew).

As per the usual, Oriel made no effort to knock and wait to be invited into the dorm and instead waltzed in like he owned the place. He placed the generously sized cake-box on the table and called out. "Tak?" Shit, she better be here or else this was going to be hella embarrassing. Oriel didn't bother waiting for a response before simply tromping down the hall and inviting himself into Tak's room, pending she didn't come out to inspect the "mysterious" call he'd given her. Either way, as soon as he met the little Native woman, Oriel would pick her up with one fell swoop and toss her over his shoulder, then cart her out to the kitchen where he would deposit the girl in front of the table. "Uh....Happy birthday...or something, yeah..." And he opened the box to reveal the cake.

Tak honestly didn't expect much, or anything, on her birthday. She hadn't really told anyone about it that she could recall, so she thought maybe she might get a well-wish or two from Cam or Carter if they remembered, and maybe a hug or something from Oriel, if he remembered too. Other than that, she was planning to spend it in her room, having gone two her only two classes of the day that morning. She might go swimming or running later, and she might not. Maybe she would just swirl henna designs over her arms and legs all day, maybe smoke a little. It was up to her - no one was around to tell her what to do.

She was currently reading through an interesting book her parents had sent her for her birthday about tarot and other sort of future-reading practices that she wanted to try out. She had tarot cards, but hadn't yet felt prepared enough to use them on anyone but herself. Hmm... Maybe she should give it a try sometime. But, her concentration was distracted by the sound of an open door, and then her name called out that sounded like Oriel. Tak started to stand and was heading for her room door when it opened before she could reach it, and suddenly she was being hoisted into the air and dragged out with barely a squeak and a "Hey!" She giggled and kicked lightly in protest, but allowed the taller boy to cart her out into the kitchen, glad that he had remembered and had apparently done something for the occasion.

She watched with anticipation as Oriel opened the box, and upon seeing it, Tak stared for a moment before snorting and turning around to push her friend's chest. "Did you make that?" she demanded, turning back and laughing at the ridiculous thing. "Oh, Oriel honey, you shouldn't have." She loved it. She really did. Especially since he had gone to the effort of bringing it over. "Thank you, kitty," she said a little more softly, reaching back to cup Oriel's cheek and place a kiss on the opposite one. "Are we going to eat it now?" She hadn't realized she was hungry until that moment.

Oriel liked celebrating other people’s birthdays when he could. When they mattered to him. Or when he felt like he had to suck up to them or something. Yes, the point was for Tak to have her birthday celebrated. He didn’t expect her to do anything in return, though it would be nice. But he also felt a little(a lot) guilty about punching out Cam when he was supposed to be Tak’s support, but then again, he wasn’t doing a very good job of it so far, or at least from what Oriel had seen, so Oriel was still convinced that he more than deserved it.

The other half was that he wanted to see how she would respond to the cake itself. It was in pretty poor taste. He wouldn’t have been surprised if she slapped him over it. But instead Tak smiled and gave him a kiss on the cheek. No, he wasn’t exactly expecting that reaction, but it wasn’t wholly unwelcome either. “Yeah,” he said sheepishly, a color of pink reaching his cheeks. “If you want, sure.” Most of the design was just frosting anyway. The baby was just one giant sugar-baby. Oriel wanted to save that piece for last, if he could.

Oriel helped himself to the kitchenette, pulling out some plates and a knife to cut the cake with, and offered it to her. “You wanna do the honors?”

Fortunately, it took quite a lot to really offend Tak, so the cake, while somewhat rude in context, didn't do much other than make her a little huffy and amused. It was the fact that Oriel had put in the time and effort to make it that she appreciated. "I didn't think anyone remembered, or really cared, that it's my birthday," she admitted. "So... I'm really glad you came over." Tak wondered where Phoenix was - maybe working? It was alright, she knew Oriel better anyway, although she'd also grown very attached and maternal over the childish pixie. He just seemed so fragile and trouble-prone, she felt like he needed protection all the time.

She let Oriel grab the stuff for the cake and, when offered, took the knife he held out. "Oh, but it's such a masterpiece," she replied with a deep sigh, before chuckling and making a cut... Right through one of the boobs. She gave an empathetic wince and made a second cut before pulling the piece out and setting it on one of the plates. She repeated the process and set out another piece of cake and took one of them for herself. "Mm.... Breast meat," she laughed as she took a bite. "Delicious." Leave it to Oriel to get her in a mischievous mood.

"So... Your birthday's coming up soon too, isn't it?" she asked after she swallowed a bite. "Have any plans, or do I need to carry you out of your room to celebrate too?"

Oriel shuffled his feet, in a mock/honest play of meekness and embarrassment. “Well you’re, uh….my friend so….” Maybe he should just come out with the real reason already? Well, half of it, the other half was that, yes, he did want to do something to make Tak feel special. “And I get it,” he mumbled. “You been going through a lot and…well, I didn’t do much to help when I should’ve…” And maybe if he had, he could have avoided a lot of his own shit he ended going through at the time. “………….also I hit Cam. ‘Cause he’s an asshole and deserved it.” Oriel turned his head to the side, avoiding eye contact. He didn’t know how she’d take that…then again, with her ability, maybe she already kind of guessed?

It was hard to tell what kind of things she would know and what she didn’t.

But he was glad she liked it. And he was glad that he took the time to make it for her. It took him practically all afternoon and evening the day before. Even longer because of his roommate’s interruptions. “Thanks,” he said, still with the sheepish smiles. They did spread into more amused ones as she cut into the breast of the cake. “It’s the best kind,” he agreed with a cocky tilt of his head. He licked his lips, clearly thinking about another kind of breast meat he like to be feeding from.

“Yeah,” he said with a nod. Oriel wasn’t planning on saying anything to anyone except Phoenix. “Nah, Phoenix and me…we got plans. Been planning it for a while now.” To get the matching promise ring tattoos. Still, it was a nice gesture for Tak to suggest. “But, you know, maybe I can reschedule if what you got proves more interesting or something?” he said with his usual conceited attitude. Oriel had no intention of rescheduling, though. He’d been looking forward to this date.

Tak went quiet and still, watching Oriel as he mumbled and shifted around, before pulling him into another hug, tucking herself under his chin and giving his back a squeeze. "Thank you, honey," she murmured. "It really... Means a lot." With all that she'd gone through recently and with few people there to support her, Tak appreciated all the affection she could get. As for hitting Cam... Well, she had had her suspicions, which were always pretty accurate, for obvious reasons. ".... I see," she replied, absorbing this information. "He's... Not all bad, you know. He... He tries, even if it doesn't seem like it." Tak bit her lip and added after a moment,"Still... I was very upset that he left. It... Really threw me into a mess, and..." And she still wasn't entirely out of it, even with him back. What if she just got abandoned again?

But she didn't want to think about that now. It was her birthday, and she was supposed to be having a good time. "Mmm... You've got that right," Tak replied, taking another bite of the dessert. "... I think I need a girlfriend," she sighed, staring at the mutilated cake. "Or at least someone with breasts that I can have some fun with." She'd had enough flat chests and dicks for... Well, a little bit. She cheekily reached up and 'groped' Oriel's chest. "Mm... It's just not the same," she clucked. She knew he knew the feeling.

"Of course, I should have known you two were planning something," she replied, trying to squelch the unusual feeling of jealousy that had risen up. "I bet you two will have fun, whatever it is. I like Phoenix... I still think he's going to break one of these days, though." Tak chuckled and continued with her cake. "No, I didn't really have any ideas, at least nothing more interesting than being with your boyfriend," she laughed. "Because it wouldn't end in sex, whatever it would be."

Oriel smiled gently as Tak brought herself into the embrace. He rested his chin over her head and brushed his hand through her long black hair. It was comforting, to hold her close like this. While he could easily turn his thoughts, and the situation, to something more suggestive, he also enjoyed how much at ease he was put by merely the close contact. Tak was…he remembered thinking this before, when she had come back to Hammel, that she was so much smaller than he remembered. When they first met, Oriel was only a handful of inches taller, and she seemed like such an adult back then…now she fit so perfectly in his arms, the tiny, frail thing she was. When did that happen?

Oriel tightened his embrace. “I know….he ain’t fucking good though, either. Trust me, I know what guys like him’re like, I am one.” He chucked halfheartedly. “Does he know that?” he asked. “I know you want to, but you can’t just let him off the hook like that just ‘cause he’s got a half-decent smile.” Oriel shook his head gently. “…abandonment’s the worst,” he mumbled. “I can’t forgive that…” He couldn’t understand how anybody could.

Oriel held the small Native girl a for a few more lingering moments before finally letting her go, finishing it off with a kiss on her head. “Girlfriend? You finally sick of guys?” Oriel could back that, if she could find someone who would support her like she deserved. He laughed and shrugged a shoulder. “Nah, it ain’t but…it’s worth it.” Oriel didn’t think he’d have been able to find anyone else as great as Phoenix.

“You’re right, I actually…I’m kind of scared of that too,” he admitted. Phoenix was still as skinny as a twig, it was a wonder he hadn’t broken already. Though if Oriel didn’t care so much, he probably would have by now. “Well, I mean, if you wanted it to, I’m sure we can work something out,” he said with a boastful strut. “I mean…it is my birthday.” He could do what he wanted….or so he liked to believe, though he knew he wouldn’t do anything that Phoenix didn’t like. Oriel dipped his head with a playful grin, letting his hair fall over his face. "What 'bout you? Anything you particularly wanted to do today?"

As much smaller as Tak was than the younger boy, in a strange sense, she still felt incredible maternal protection towards him. He was younger, after all, and though she knew he'd been through a lot and had seen more than he should for his age, she had gone through plenty, too. She liked to think she was somewhat wise, despite what had happened to her; in an otherworldly sense, if nothing else. She just wanted to make sure Oriel made something of his life.

"I know," she replied back, mouth twisting into a frown. "I... Honestly, sometimes I look at him and I wonder what the hell I got myself into..." Cam didn't really care about her. At least, not more so than his other hook-ups. And that didn't used to matter to Tak; the whole baby thing sort of changed her emotions about the relationship. Stupid hormones. "I... I don't know," she sighed. "As good as I am at picking up emotions and things from people, I can never seem to really express them myself." Tak bit her lip. "I guess I'm just used to knowing that sort of stuff naturally, and I forget it's not so easy for others..." She looked up and gave Oriel a sympathetic squeeze of his hand. "I know you won't abandon me," she murmured. "If only because you know what it's like..."

Not for the first time, Tak found herself secretly wishing Oriel had been the father instead.

She tried to lighten the mood when it fell to more light-hearted things (sort of). "I guess," Tak sighed. "I think I'm just tired of... All the douches I've managed to surround myself with." She peeked up at Oriel with a small smirk. "Current company not included." Hell, Oriel was a saint compared to some of the guys she'd messed around with. He was the only one here with her on her birthday, after all.

Tak smiled as she turned back to her cake, taking another large bite so her cheeks puffed out as she listened to Oriel talk about his scrawny lover. "Well, from what I've seen, you take good care of him," she shrugged. Tak would have had a word with him otherwise. She gave a small snort and pressed a hand against Oriel's chest, fingering the fabric of his shirt. "You think Phoenix would be okay with that?" she purred. "Because... I wouldn't decline if he is." She wanted to make sure the pixie boy was really okay with it, though, and didn't just say he was. She would be able to tell. "Mmm... Not particularly," she hummed. "Probably was just going to get high in my room and try to... Entertain myself, since I don't have anyone else to go to at the moment." Tak smirked, though her features were still a little sad.

“You should’ve been the one to hit him,” he mumbled, though truthfully, Oriel couldn’t picture Tak being violent with anyone. She was too understanding. It wasn’t a bad thing, and it was one of the reasons why Oriel liked her so much - he didn’t have to explain or go into things that were difficult for him to talk about too much for her to understand - but it also made it easy for other people to take advantage of her kindness, and to take it for granted. In Oriel’s opinion, Cameron was lucky that it had been Tak to carry and bare his child.

“Yeah…” he said despondently. Oriel didn’t want anyone to have to know what it was like to be left behind. But still, he knew, it was something that happened everyday. He hated people for it.

Oriel chuckled at her attempt to bring them out of the heavy atmosphere cocked his head cockily down at her with a cocky smile. “Well, then, on behalf of all the douche-bag-o-dicks in the world, I apologize,” he said with a bow. Because no matter how much she thought otherwise, Oriel still knew he was far from being dubbed a “good” person.

Oriel was enjoying watching Tak enjoy the cake more than he was eating it himself. He loved seeing other people enjoy the things he made. Still, he picked up a fork and stuck it into the boob of the cake, completely ignoring the piece Tak had so generously cut for him earlier. “I do my best,” he said, twisting the fork in a circle. “I worry about him.” A lot. Oriel lifted his head. “I don’t know, probably. I know he don’t hate you, at least, so maybe.” Though he also knew how important it was to Phoenix that they remained exclusive to each other. It was a struggle, honestly, but he was managing, somehow.

The way she put it made Oriel feel guilty, that he wasn’t able to give her a more “enjoyable” birthday gift. He didn’t know what to say, though. “I hope…things get better for you, Tak.” He really did. She deserved to have a break and be happy.

Tak rose an eyebrow. "I did hit him," she told Oriel, smirking slightly. "When I first saw him after he came back. I laid one right over his cheek." She tapped her own for effect. "I didn't really leave a mark or anything, and I kissed him right after but..." She trailed off with a shrug. "I was just.... And that smirk..." She shook her head. "He's just a... A moron." But Tak still loved him, in a way. She couldn't help it.

She giggled a bit at his 'apology', not wanting to sulk and sigh over the past anymore on her birthday. "Aw, thanks," she replied, giving him a squeeze and another peck on the cheek. "You're such a sweetheart sometimes, you know that?" Not all the time, certainly. But he had his moments.

Tak watched him stab into the round lump on the cake, wincing as he swirled it around. "Ouch," she chuckled. She bit her lip and tilted her head as he spoke, pondering an idea. "You know, if you're ever... Worried about him, if he might be lying about how he's doing, or whatever, I can always hang around him a bit and see if anything's wrong," she told him with a small shrug. "My ability doesn't lie. People can't hide stuff from me." Tak smiled softly, not surprised by his response. "Don't worry about it, hun. Whatever works for you both." She just wanted them to be happy and healthy in their relationship.

She hadn't meant to make Oriel feel guilty, but Tak realized after she spoke that he probably took it that way. "Oh, don't worry about me," she replied with optimism. "I only have a couple months left here and I'll be off on my own anyway. I hear college is supposed to be great." She'd likely just be going to community college, at least for a while, but it was something. "Still need to find a roommate, though..."

Ohh, so she did hit him. Well, now didn’t Oriel feel like a little…. Wait… “And you kissed him? Doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose?” Sure it sounded like something Oriel would do himself, but if you wanted to prove a point, you kind of had to stick to your guns, right? “He’s never going to learn if you keep rewarding him for being a jerk,” he mumbled. Unless he really was as bad as Oriel and just didn’t give a shit about consequences…well, Oriel cared about consequences, but only so much.

“I try,” he said meekly…which didn’t last long because who are we kidding, this was Oriel and he does not do meek. “I mean…I don’t always try, but sometimes I do.”

Oriel didn’t let up on the swirling fork. He’d take a bite eventually. “Phoenix doesn’t lie to me,” he said. “I told him not to. He said he wouldn’t.” His eyes remained focused on the cake. “He knows how much I hate it.” Oriel only had that to go on and he could only trust it. He wanted to trust that Phoenix would speak up if there was something he wasn’t okay with, like Oriel told him to. Oriel didn’t like the idea that Phoenix might be keeping something from him. If he thought about it too much, it’d drive him damn near crazy.

He finally finished with the fork and scooped up a cluster of off-white crumbs onto it. “There’s a lot of people graduating this year.” A lot of people Oriel knew. Hammel was going to be a strange place without them. “You can probably hook up with one of them.”

Tak let out a humph and crossed her arms, shifting her hip to the side. ".... I don't know," she sighed. "I didn't know how to react to seeing him. I guess I didn't really know what I was doing." She quirked her lips uncertainly. "I mean.... He's the father of my child, and everything... And... I don't know, I just feel like it could have been worse, despite him leaving. Maybe." She rubbed her temples; Tak hated being indecisive. "I don't know anymore. At least I didn't get pregnant with some jerk who might have battled me for custody of the child or something." That would have been hell.

She smirked as Oriel spoke, taking a cheek in each palm and landing a proper smack right on the lips. "I love when you do," she told him, booping Oriel on the nose with her finger.

Tak nodded slowly at his response, taking the time to take a couple more bites of the boob-cake. "I don't think he'd be one to lie, especially to you," she agreed with a shrug. "It was just an offer. Although I can do it to anyone you'd like, really." She peeked up at him before setting her plate down for a moment and heaving herself up to sit on the counter, looping her legs around his butt with a grin. "I could ask you anything and know if you're lying to me or not. Mmmm..." She picked up her plate and scooped up another bite, making a big deal out of sticking the piece in her mouth and licking her lips.

"Hook up, right...." Tak chuckled and leaned forward, stealing a bit of the cake on Oriel's fork. "You suggesting I'd sleep with anyone I ended up rooming with?" She knew he didn't, but it was fun playing. "Oh honey. You know me too well."

“Just because it could have been worse doesn’t make it okay.” That was like saying…fuck, that it was okay to beat someone because at least you weren’t killing them…though it was true that on more than one occasion Oriel had tried justifying things that way. And by this point, it just sounded like she was looking for reasons to forgive him. Oriel growled. “If it were like that….then I’d say the kid was lucky.” He’d kill to have one parent, let alone two, who were willing to fight for who got to keep him instead of who had to keep him. Oriel really was paying too much attention to this matter. The whole situation upset him, and the fact that he seemed to be the only one who thought it was worth getting upset over was just making him more upset.

Oriel started gnawing more on the cake he shoveled up from the crumby hole he’d created. “I’d….” Oriel wasn’t sure he wanted to know if Phoenix was lying to him or not. If he didn’t know then he could keep trusting, even if it wasn’t happening that way. If somehow Oriel found out that Phoenix was lying to him…Oriel might not be able to trust his word again. As much as he wished that he could tell, he was still afraid to know. He was already paranoid enough as it was about people lying to him. “Even if he was….I don’t know….I think I’d just rather not know…” He could pretend all he wanted as long as he didn’t know. Believe anything he wished.

Oriel tilted his head with a smirk. “That ain’t what I was saying.” Even if it was essentially true. Oriel didn’t put it past Tak to hook up with her roommate, especially if they were nice to look at. He pulled up another fork full of cake and held it out for her take. The girl apparently wanted Oriel to feed her.

Tak opened her mouth to reply, but ended up snapping her lips shut and burying her face in her hands, suddenly overwhelmed. "I don't... I don't know...." she whispered, beginning to tremble slightly. It was rare that she was pushed into showing such emotion; the whole deal with Cameron and the baby had rocked her so much, and she'd tried to be strong, but there was only so much even she could take. Even with him back, Tak still struggled with the after-effects, the paranoia of people leaving her. She didn't respond to what he said next; she couldn't. She was too busy trying to compose herself again from her sudden and unexpected breakdown.

How had this conversation gone so off-kilter? She loved spending time with Oriel; this sort of stuff didn't usually get in the way of their playful relationship. Tak almost felt bad he'd even come over in the first place, since she was making him feel bad. "I understand," she said softly. Tak might just end up doing some snooping on her own, without Oriel knowing; if she found out some good news, she would tell him. "You can trust me, hun. I hope you know that." Her hand found his and she gave it a squeeze, amazed by how much larger his palm was than hers. She managed a small smile. "Are you done growing yet?" she teased softly, flattening their hands together to compare.

Her smile grew a little wider, and Tak batted her eyelashes at him. "Sure it wasn't," she chuckled. "You know how much alike we are, Oriel. And I don't have a boyfriend to keep me in line." She opened her mouth and accepted the bite, pulling her friend in closer and wrapping her arms around him. Tak rested her head against his chest. "I love you, you know that, right?" she said quietly.

Really, Oriel was such a fucking asshole. Tak probably was fine, just like she claimed, and then Oriel had to go and force her into a depression. Making a girl cry, really great Oriel. Bet Cameron never did that, that’s why every seemed to think he walked on water and could forgive anything he did no matter how horrible. Meanwhile, Oriel just has to give someone the stink eye and suddenly he’s the worst person to have ever lived. How nice it must be for people to have such a great amount of faith and forgiveness for you…Even someone like Tak trusted that blonde bastard more than she did Oriel…that’s why it was Oriel who ended up making her cry and not Cameron.

Could he trust her? Oriel wanted to. He really, really did. Maybe it was his own fucking fault for getting too close? Then he wouldn’t have cared so much. Of course, it was his own fucking paranoia which was even going to ruin what he had with Tak, a very precious friendship. And it was that irrational distrust of others that would end up getting in the way of his relationship with Phoenix, should he ever hear something even slightly contrary to what he wanted to be true.

Oriel shrugged. “Dunno,” he said despondently. “I cracked six feet back in December. Haven’t really checked since.” All he knew was that the world, as big as it was, looked a lot smaller now than it did a year ago.

“Yeah…” Oriel said with a nod. “It’s a shame really.” He paused, lowering his eyes. “You deserve to be happy, Tak.” His arms fell over her shoulders as she pulled him in closer, and rested a hand on her head, holding the small woman in a gentle embrace. Oriel wasn’t sure how to respond to her admission, though. “Sheesh….first Phoenix…now you. The fuck’s wrong with you two?” Oriel didn’t deserve their feelings, yet had them anyway. Though a part of him still didn’t believe it. A part of him still felt like this was all just a ruse and one day he was going to find out that reality just played the longest, cruelest joke on him for nothing but it’s own amusement. He was…terrified…that it might be true. Oriel pulled her in tighter.
