Jonathan Park glanced at his phone, hesitating on picking up. The student in his office was eagerly taking notes, trying to understand the concepts they were going over at the beginning of the term. It would be rude to interrupt, but he had another job along with being a biology teacher, and his gut instinct told him this was important…

He sighed, pulling off his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I’m sorry, I think this is important. Would you mind if I had a moment?” The student politely nodded and left the room, and Jonathan picked up the phone, trying to keep his voice light. “Hello, Jonathan Park speaking.”
”Hello, Mr. Park, this is Nancy at Burlington Elementary. We’re sorry to bother you, but… Well, Benjamin has just been having a hard time keeping to himself again.”
The man stifled another sigh. “What did he do this time?”
”Well… He’s been stealing food from other children and pushing them out of their chairs. We’ve given him numerous warnings and time-outs, but nothing seems to be effective.”
Which, of course, meant that Jonathan and his wife were expected to discipline their son themselves, and hope for better behavior, or else more drastic measures would have to be made. This was the second call just this week; there had been others previous, and the man was getting weary.
“I’m very sorry for Ben’s behavior, Nancy. Karen and I will have another talk with him and see if we can figure out how to alleviate this misbehavior. Thank you for calling.”
After a bit more talking, the professor hung up the phone, tapping his fingers absent-mindedly against the desk before remembering there was a student waiting outside. He waved her back in and went back to work, picking up where they left off and trying to push the problem of his son to the back of his mind until he could do something about it later.

Dearstupid bookdiary,
Mom and dad want me to write in here to help with ‘anger’ issues, but they don’t know me! I don’t have anger issues. I just don’t like to follow rules, they’re dumb and I want to do whatever I want so there! Why do my parents have to be so mean? I wish they would work more.
And Tony deserved to be hit today. He took my chips, Mrs. Brunswick didn’t see it! She’s a dumb dumbyhead and I don’t like her.
At least I got to hang out with Caleb’s house today. His mom is nice, she doesn’t yell at us when we run around the house and climb trees. I wanted to sleep over, but my parents said no. I told Caleb I’d sneak out so we can hang out somewhere at night, when it’s dark and scary out. So I better go!

“That was very good, Benjamin. You’re doing really well.”
The ten-year-old smiled at the praise, but inside he was emotionless. Bored, even. His parents had wanted him to learn piano ever since he was like, two, and of course they’d signed him up for these very expensive lessons that he couldn’t just quit because he’d rather be doing something else. Like riding his bike on one of the mountain bike trails not too far from his neighborhood, or playing truth or dare with some of his more adventurous friends. One of them had nearly lost a finger last time; it was great fun.
But noo, he was stuck here in this smelly room with a woman old enough to be his grandma. Benjamin bit his tongue as she urged him to play again, barely able to keep back his scowl as he replayed the same piece for what seemed like the millionth time.
It was always like this. Him trying to do things he wanted, and his parents ushering him back into their protective little shelter of education and music and good manners. Benji was on the verge of just rebelling completely and running away; he wasn’t sure how much more of all this he could take.
At least there was one thing he enjoyed doing that his parents provided for him. Dance lessons. He'd protested at first, saying it was dumb and he didn't want to get made fun of, but Benji had actually found that he... Really liked dancing. He wouldn't tell anyone, but... Ballet was one of his favorites. So while he pouted and protested sometimes about going, he always ended up smiling and in a good mood by the time practice was over, and didn't want to leave.

Dear stupid book,
I think that name’s just gonna stick. I know I don’t write in here a lot, but you’re full of stupid stuff, so it fits right?
Anyway, I think I figured out how to get my mom and dad to stop bugging me all the time! As long as I act like I’m doing what they tell me, they let me do what I want when I don’t have lessons or whatever! They seem to trust me more or something, so I’m really acting good, I guess. Hey, maybe I could be an actor someday. I don't wanna be a professor or a doctor like they want me to be.
But… They can’t know that. No, I’m gonna keep up this good kid act and see just how much I can get away with. They won’t know a thing! I’m even sucking up to my teacher more, so she’s ignoring me, yay. I’m careful about sneaking out and stuff when my parents are sleeping, and I haven’t been caught yet (although I've had a couple close calls with some people asking me why I was out at night, I gotta be more careful about that).
I think I’m really onto something. Took me long enough… I really don’t think I’m smart enough to be a professor anyway.
But I’m smart enough to outsmart them!

“What a polite son you have, I’ve never seen a young man his age with such wonderful manners!”
Benjamin smiled his perfected innocent smile, tilting his head a little ‘bashfully’ at the comment while his parents thanked the woman for her praise. He hated this luncheon that they had made him come to, for University staff to bring their families and ‘get to know one another’. All these other kids were stuck-up brats who sucked up to their parents and talked too much. Then again, Benjamin supposed they thought he was a suck-up too – maybe they were all acting.
“Come on, Benjamin, there’s someone else I want you to meet,” his mother ushered him towards a stuffy-looking old man that was probably a friend of hers in the human physiology department. Ben followed obediently, trying not to tug on the tie that he swore was trying to strangle his neck. He was incredibly uncomfortable, but that didn’t stop him from smiling and being polite and pretending to be interested in learning about these people he cared nothing about.
------
“Hey man, have you tried these flavored ones? They’re really weird!”
Benji took the cigarette from his friend, rolling the stick between his fingers before popping it into his mouth and lighting up. He didn’t smoke all that often because his parents would definitely catch onto the smell, and to be honest he didn’t enjoy it that much, but it felt like the right rebellious thing to do with his group of equally rebellious friends.
His parents didn’t know about them, of course – they thought he was studying with a bunch of snobs for the math quiz tomorrow. Benji wasn’t worried about it, he was smart enough that he knew the material well enough to pass. Because of course, keeping up his good-boy act meant getting good grades. And so far he was doing pretty well – his parents didn’t suspect a thing.
The taste was strange in his mouth, but he grinned at his buddies as he lifted the cigarette away from his lips and blow out a stream of smoke. “Not bad,” he determined, sucking in another lungful. “We still gonna go tag that building, ‘r what?”
Whooping and hollering, the kids grabbed their bags and spray cans and sped off on their bikes, Benji taking the lead with his little group of rebels.

Dear stupid book,
Something really weird happened today. It’s my birthday, you know – I just turned 14 – and… I feel strange. Like... Everyone around me suddenly isn’t who I thought they were. So I was at this party with a couple of my friends and… I don’t know, all of a sudden it was like, whoa, I realized James is… Okay, this is gonna sound crazy, but I think he’s an alien.
I’m not crazy, I swear! I don’t even really know what happened or how I know, but… I do. I just do. I didn’t say anything to him, because that’d be weird, but… It happened with some other people too. This girl I was thinking about asking out? Yeah, that’s not going to happen, she’s an assassin! I don’t think she’s going to try to kill me, thank God, but what if I’d asked her out and then dumped her like I do all of them!? Jeesh…
I didn’t say anything to my parents, of course. They’d wanna send me to a shrink or something. I think it’s better if I just… Don’t say anything until one of my friends brings it up. Yeah.
Anyway, I have this killer headache and I’m really tired, so I’m gonna pass out now. I’ll keep updating this if I run into any more weird people…

“Eyyy, baby, you busy tonight? I got us a couple tickets to that movie I know
you wanted to see, how about we sneak out tonight and go see it?”
Benji grinned as he laid in his dorm bed, holding back a laughter hearing the excited chattering of his newest catch. She was a pretty thing, and, get this, a princess. How awesome would it be to sneak around with a fucking princess? He’d do what he normally did – keep throwing some empty compliments her way like he’d been doing to sweeten her up, make her feel special, have a bit of fun, and then move on to the next one. He never pushed too far – he was still a virgin (although he didn’t tell his friends that) – because he didn’t want to get into that sort of trouble. A little bit of his parents’ teaching had stuck, apparently.
Still, girls liked the bad boys. No matter what he did to them, that always seemed to be the case.
Speaking of his parents, he remembered as he hung up the phone that he was supposed to go visit them that weekend. It was convenient they worked at the U of V – it was just a quick drive over that was just long enough to put on his good-boy act that he still put on for the majority of the teachers here at Hammel. Of course, it didn’t work on all of them – stupid telepaths, like that fucking Zeus psychologist – but for the most part he did alright.
For now, Benji focused his attention on the pile of homework stacked beside his bed, and let out a sigh. Mmm… First he wanted a cigarette. Maybe the nicotine would help wake his brain up.
He wandered outside and snatched a stick out of his near-empty box, lighting the cig up and taking a deep whiff. Ahh… It was still a rare treat that he allowed himself. Not a regular thing. Benji’s act couldn’t keep up with that. He’d found the perfect balance between Benjamin the suck-up and Benji the rebel, and he wasn’t going to mess that up.
He wasn't all bad boy, though, as much as he tried to be. It seemed that some of his upbringing still had affected him in some ways - he helped people if he saw them struggling with something, sometimes. Often with homework, or studying. He was still pretty sharp, despite his acting like he wasn't, and he didn't mind helping out a classmate if they needed it (especially if it was a pretty girl).
And dancing.... He was still practicing, as he'd been doing since he was a kid. It was impossible for it not to bring out the less cocky side of Benji's personality. Well, he was still cocky, but he smiled more, and laughed, and enjoyed showing other people that he practiced with how to flow through movements and perfect certain motions. Dancing was his kryptonite.
