The BasicsName: Josephine Raines
Nicknames: Josie (most common), Jo (rarely used)
Age: 24 (Born January 8th, 1991)
Orientation: Straight
Desired Rank/Job: Hammel maintenance/janitor
Powers: Biological manipulation (human). This requires that Josie actually physically touch the body of whoever she's manipulating, generally a wound (or in case of illness, general proximity of the cause, like the chest for a flu or abdomen for a hernia).
Limits: The process is physically exhausting, especially for more serious injuries. During manipulation, Josie will develop on her own person whatever it is she's trying to fix on another. Whatever assorted aches and pains she takes on last as long as they would if they were the original injury. Attempting to manipulate more serious injuries will result in blacking out. (OOC: the absolute most serious thing Josie can heal completely is in the realm of broken bones and generally nonlethal illnesses, although she is personally fuzzy on her limits because she hates using her power for several reasons).
Play By: Julia StilesThe DetailsHair Color: Bleach/dyed blonde (naturally mousy brown)
Eye Color: Dark brown
Any Piercings? Three along side of left ear (another three have closed due to disuse), one in right earlobe, one in left eyebrow (usually empty), one on left side of lower lip (usually empty)
Any Tattoos? Red cross symbol on left calf, half-sleeve of flowers on right upper arm
Any Scars? One on her right shoulder, four inches long and half an inch wide, hidden by tattoo; assorted nicks here and there
General Appearance: Josie is slight and short at 5'3", with narrow hips and shoulders. From her mother, she inherited her round jaw and straight nose. Her brown eyes came from her father, as well as the brown hair that she regularly colors a golden blonde. She keeps her straight hair cut at or above chin length for ease of maintenance and styling. Despite her height, Josie isn't frequently mistaken for much younger than she is; her face is youthful, but not deceptively so.
She doesn't wear makeup or most of her piercings to work, but on her downtime, she'll put in most or all piercings and throw on some dark but not overwhelming eye makeup. The most decorative aspect of her appearance during the work day is polish on the fingernails she keeps clipped short. In day-to-day life, Josie's clothing varies much more. Running errands or lounging around calls for printed shirts, dark jeans, thrifted jackets, and either a pair of flats or her favorite boots. When going out on the town, she tends towards midriff-baring shirts and a collection of necklaces and rings. She doesn't wear skirts, favoring shorts during the warmer months. The half-sleeve covering her right upper arm consists of red hibiscus, yellow sunflowers, and white daisies, and is of decent but not spectacular quality. Her scar is slightly visible from up close, but mostly hidden by a carefully-placed hibiscus.
Personality: Josie retains some of the hair-trigger temper from her teen years, but her time at Hammel helped to calm her down significantly. When “playing nice,” she prefers to just ignore whoever is bothering her rather than take it with a smile; if pressed will move from hostile silence to rude shutdowns, and from there to vulgar screaming. That said, although she still gets riled up more easily than she should, Josie is better at picking her battles these days.
Although her angry moments can leave a bad impression, Josie in a good mood is much more easy-going and humorous. When in the company of friends, Josie is usually loud and boisterous. When she befriends someone, her attitude can be summed up as, “I can mess with you but no one else can.” That is, she can be fiercely protective, even in situations where the friend is question deserves whatever she's protecting them from; at the same time, sometimes Josie goes too far with sarcasm and playful insults.
Regarding work, she tends to be fairly no-nonsense, refusing to cut corners. Josie has no patience for slackers, but will be patient with people who work more slowly due to inexperience. These people she'll take time to work with, because she remembers what it's like to not understand something and be left in the dust for it.
Due to the nature of her failed engagement, Josie is generally distrustful and avoidant of men who express an interest in her. This issue usually comes to light in social settings like bars and clubs, but is rarely a problem in work settings.Your VicesLikes:

Weaknesses: Holds grudges, impolite, reads slowly, smokes, can't win a fight if her opponent is of average size or larger (prefers to get the first hit and beat a retreat)
Fears: That her sister hates her, that she won't amount to anything, intimacy and commitment
Secret: Josie isn't very open in conversation, so many things about her could be considered a secret. That said, her biggest is that she blames her power and herself for the dissolution of her family.Family TiesFather: Mark Raines (marketing executive, 55, estranged)

Home base was a small town in southern Ohio, Josie was born healthy to ecstatic parents and three years later Ronnie followed. The problems arouse when Josie began schooling - in kindergarten it's not such a big deal to be bad with your letters, but by the age of eight it was clear that she was falling behind her classmates and fast. For Mark Raines, this was a problem, and he immediately began pushing Josie to do better. Not enough to actually sit down with her after school and help her with homework, he was too busy for that. Instead pressure came in the form of snipes and putdowns, and only got worse when Ronnie entered school and seemed to experience none of the setbacks that Josie did. The only thing their father seemed to disapprove of more than Josie's failures were meta-humans, and the toxicity at home only served to stunt her progress. Although she did well enough in math (with the exception of word problems), Josie consistently read about three grade levels below her peers and was put in remedial classes, much to her father's disdain. By middle school, she had been held back a grade and she stopped working to correct herself, instead acting out by ignoring her schoolwork and lashing out at the peers who considered her stupid. It didn't matter how hard she tried, she wasn't catching up and it wasn't good enough, so why bother?
One day at the age of fifteen, Josie was put in charge of watching her younger sister while their father was at work and their mother was running a last-minute errand. Ronnie tripped running down the stairs and slammed her head on an end table, causing her to go unconscious and bleed from the back of her head. After frantically calling 911, Josie applied pressure to her sister's headwound with her hands in an attempt to slow the bleeding. The EMTs found both girls passed out next to each other, both with bloody scalps but the only laceration being Josie's. They were questioned – Ronnie couldn't remember what happened, but Josie was able to clumsily describe the feeling rushing from her into her sister. Their parents were stumped until a Hammel official showed up to their home later that week, and that's when shit hit the fan. It took Mark Raines six days to accept that his daughter was a meta. It took him one more to leave.
Josie's mother and sister stayed in Ohio, although moving from the family home into a small apartment, while Josie was sent off to Hammel. At first her anger was worse than ever, but with the help of the institute's trained professionals, she was able to get help both with her mental state and her schoolwork. It turned out that without the presence of her father applying pressure and influencing her sense of self-worth, she was able to progress at a much faster pace than she was used to, although she still didn't quite catch up to her peers. Josie graduated from Hammel with a C average the winter she turned 19. Instead of going on to college, she moved in with another meta student, an electricity manipulator named Cal, whom she had been dating for a year.
Life was steady for a few years. Cal proposed when Josie was 22, and she was thrilled until she learned that it was a ploy to keep her from finding out that he'd cheated. They split; Cal got the house, Josie got the dog. She moved back to Pilot Ridge, where she resides now.Roleplay ExampleYOOOOOOOOAdded miscellanyThis is an aged-up adaptation of a character I used to play several years ago in a setting similar to Hammel, and I'm stoked to get her back into a game.
