“There will always be those in this word who can’t see past the end of their own nose,” Ida said waving a hand, yes she was cynical about the whole thing. You couldn’t change people’s minds. “I find it wearying to get angry, I really just feel sad for them.” It was a closed minded existence to be angry at everything. Hate was a strong word and it was a strong emotion. It was exhausting to hate, Ida found that those people who did preach hate were not just nasty to those they hated they were nasty in general. The way Ida saw it her God was a good God who loved mankind. She smiled to herself. She wished she had the time to go to church more often. Sundays were crazy days most of the time, she was lucky if she made it once a month and often stretches were longer. But Russell was speaking again, so she shook of her thoughts and focused on him. “It’s very true. A lot of employers still look at us and though I’ve never gotten it I have had friends who get asked if they’re planning on having children soon. It’s horrible.” Russell had gotten Idalia on her soapbox and he was probably going to hear more than he ever wanted to.
Ida nodded. “You don’t have to spend hours doing it,” she said teasingly, “Not all gamers are those people that don’t leave their couch for days. She nodded eagerly and she paused, not because she was shocked he didn’t know but more so because there were so many systems now. She was honestly still just a fan for the nostalgia that came from the Nintendo64 that was still at her parent’s house. “They’re Nintendo, so it depends on what game you want. The Wii is really popular but I never much got into the whole…” She mimed swinging around a remote like a crazy person, “thing.” She laughed and shook her head. “I know you can get a lot of the older systems cheap, and there’s nothing wrong with the older systems, it’s just all about the next big thing, you know.” She shrugged. She didn’t have many of the newer systems because working a lot and adulthood kind of took precedence over games a lot.
“Then it’s settled,” Ida decided placing her palm on the table as if making an important decision. “Next time you’re out on your boat I’m going to shove Ike at you and row circles around you.” She said raising her chin her eyes sparkling boastfully. It was not even in the realm of possibilities for her or any manually moved boat to go faster than a motor boat. She hoped that Russell was sympathetic to rowers, if she’d ever been waked by him she was going to swat him. Some of those yacht drives were complete asses. Despite the fact that they knew how easy it was to flip a single and worse yet it almost seemed like they enjoyed doing it. She had given more than one tongue lashing to some hotshot who thought it would be really ‘cool’ to swamp her boat.
Idalia couldn’t help but laugh. She covered her mouth and shook her head. “Oh my god I’m so sorry!” She shook her head. It made her think of that time someone left their lunch in the office fridge so long that no one even remembered what it was supposed to be in the first place. “I bet you learned your lesson then,” she teased cheerfully. “Awe, now that’s no fun,” she said but couldn’t help but laugh again. It was such a thing she would have expected from some people. The only thing Ida had been able to do was get someone she hated rained on by promising sunshine. One time in particular an ex-boyfriend had asked her for a weather report to take his new girlfriend out on a picnic. Ida had seen pouring rain, and cheerfully told him to have fun. Ida was a normally kind person, but she did have a vindictive side. She smiled warmly. “I think so to.” She looked up and into his eyes for just a moment, a thing she’d been avoiding until now. Were his eyes always so blue?
Nodding in agreement, Idalia was blissfully unaware of his thoughts. She found herself shifting slightly as the conversation twisted and turned. It seemed as if there was nothing they could run out of to talk about. She couldn’t stop smiling. “A lot of them do,” she agreed, “I mean a few don’t, but most of them are in this for the right reasons. You’ve gotta watch out for Oleander though, from Channel 3, he’s a viper and if he asks you for an interview you high tail it in the opposite direction,” she advised before adding, “And I’m not just saying that because he’s a rival.” She smiled and nodded. “You’d better, I don’t normally get a chance to get out of the office. Though I should warn you, if things are busy I might not be able to get away.” The last she added regretfully, but honestly, she lost more boys to her work schedule than she cared to admit. She took a drink of water and wet her lips, they’d been talking so long, she’d have to be careful to watch the time. She quickly checked the time on her phone and smiled with relief. Plenty of time.
Just then the food came out and Ida could already feel her mouth watering from the smell. The souvlaki looked perfect, as always, on a bed of rice and pita. The Yiaprakia looked just as good and Ida was going to have to see if Russell would share. She could of course share. It was a Greek thing, if the food was good everyone passed their plate, it had taken her a while to realize that that was not a normal person thing to do. “Oh everything looks delicious. Tell Panagiota, efharistó.” The waitress smiled and nodded before leaving their table.
