Ket had been looking forward to today for weeks. She hadn’t been able to attend the summer fair last year because two of the alpaca’s had come down with a virus and she’d had to stay behind to care for them. Her pumpkin and pecan pie that was supposed to have been entered into the competition had ended up being sold in the café at the petting zoo instead. This year, however, all the animals were healthy and Nolan had given her permission to have a break in the day to enter the contest, and that is exactly what she was going to do.
She made sure that there was enough people covering the little petting zoo they had set up for the day before giving Dexter, the young calf, a final scratch behind the ear. She then grabbed her back to go to the toilets in a nearby café to scrub her hands and arms and get changed out of her work clothes. The grass-stained jeans and hay-specked shirt were switched out for a figure-hugging black velveteen dress and smart heels, and she touched up her make-up to give a bit more colour to her features. Of course Ket knew that her pie was being judged, not her, but that fact alone was nowhere near enough to stop her from wanting to make an impression.
Once she was happy with how she looked, she dropped her bag back off with Nolan at the petting zoo and retrieved her pie. She did feel a little like she was cheating by entering the competition, given her profession, but she’d heard that professional bakers and chefs with far more experience than her usually entered so it did nothing to put her off. Setting her pie down on the table, Ket couldn’t help but be proud of it. It was her variation of a chocolate cream pie, with a graham crumb crust and rich chocolate custard topped with piped coconut meringue. Okay, so it might not have really been a chocolate cream pie at all, but the people she had used as guinea pigs for it had certainly not been complaining. After making sure it looked neat and tidy on the table, Ket stepped back away from it with a satisfied nod and went for a nosy to check out her competition.
