The soccer ball scudded along the grass, rolling to a miserable halt a mere few metres beyond the point from which it had been kicked.
Scowling and rubbing at her back, Jane sat up, giving the ball a venomous look and, with a huff, hugging her knees to her chest. She was reminiscent of some kind of spider as she sat there, all long spindly limbs.
This should have been so much cooler than it was. In theory being able to grow to be like, seven feet tall and having a huge tongue was awesome. In practice Jane couldn't get everything to work how she wanted it to. Every so often she'd by fluke pull something crazy off, like great springing jumps or scaling a wall, and then the rest of the time she was just an awkward gangly mess that couldn't even kick a ball without falling flat on her butt.
The sentiment could also be applied to the school itself. Jane had thought coming to some kind of superpower academy would be awesome, straight up something out of the comic books, with code names and colorful costumes and that. (Hers would be orange and yellow). When she'd arrived at Hammel though, it all just seemed to be about stopping herself from snaking out. While it was true that Jane couldn't really control her changes very well, she was way more interested in figuring out what she could do with her altered form than actively learning to inhibit the transformation.
Really, Jane didn't know what she wanted, out of either herself or the school. It wasn't even really like the whole lankyscales thing made her much stranger than she was before; if people were willing to put up with her in the first place then that spoke volumes.
Jane's stomach grumbled. Great... hungry again... and she really didn't want to have the mouse conversation again.
