Oriel laughed. Of course he wasn’t taking it too seriously, but it was definitely amusing how flustered he got at its mere mention…and then proceeded to rise up and meet Oriel on that level rather than shirking down like a lot of people with his typical demeanor might have done. Oriel remembered what Salem was like before…well before summer, is when he noticed the change, though he had no reason to know why. In Oriel’s opinion, he preferred Salem when he was a little bit edgy. It added flavor to what might’ve been an otherwise perfectly boring temperament. Like….right, like a certain turkey he knew, except Salem was blonde and white as fucking sandstone.
Oriel looked out into the courtyard, at the people passing. They all looked so…normal to him. And not for the first time, Oriel felt the seed of resentment start to grow in his stomach over that simple fact. He knew better, people had their own lives and who knew what they went through, as he just finished explaining to Salem…but it was somehow instinctual at this point. He hated that he did that, despite his logic telling him otherwise. “I know tons of people who’d disagree.” Like Dr. Sean, for example. Oriel supposed he was right…no, he knew it. It was just hard not to.
Cam…Oriel didn’t think he’d hear that name come from his friend’s mouth. “That bastard knows what ‘faithful’ is?” he chided. Oriel still hated the guy for running out on Tak when she needed him the most. While the two were on good terms(somehow), Oriel knew that Tak had been really hurt by that…she was just the type to never complain about it. She always tried to bear all her worries by herself, and Oriel didn’t know if he thought she was too selfless or admired her for it.
Then came a name he really hated. Just his name these days sent Oriel’s blood boiling…you’d think after all this time Oriel would have just done the ‘forgive and forget’ thing, especially since he went out of his way to ignore him…and Carter made it immensely easier by being graduated(though his twin was still wandering around, breaking his own hearts, though Oriel still didn’t hate Dom nearly as much). Oriel growled, hearing that story. “Yeah….seems to be his favorite thing to do lately. Stealing virginities, leading people on, and crushing their affections with one apathetic word.”
Oriel leaned forward and rested his arms off his knees, clenching both fists. “There’s a reason why reputations exists. Sometimes they’re exaggerated…but the rumors come from somewhere.” Oriel couldn’t claim that some of the rumors surrounding himself were baseless either. This rage-filled delinquent really was more likely to punch you than be your friend at any given moment. Whatever, it kept annoying people away.
He listened to the rest of the story in silence. Friends moving away, being left behind…finding his brother in the worst possible way. Oriel himself hadn’t seen his sister in over ten years…he had no guarantee she was still alive either. He could imagine the devastation. Then the confession of what happened on the retreat. Funny….that was around the same time that Oriel…. “Ain’t silly. It’s just how it happens.” Oriel had gone through that same sort of spiral before, over seemingly insignificant things. “One thing happens, and ‘fore you have a chance to move past it, something else happens….and then the rest….ain’t sure if you’re the cause of your own misery or if god really did take a huge shit on your life.” It was hard to tell sometimes, because it was for certain that Oriel created a lot of his own bad situations. Like when he went off on Phoenix…if he just hadn’t been so fucking stupid, then that never would’ve happened…and might not have been in that same place that Salem was on the retreat just a couple months ago. “…shit can get bad real fast if you don’t handle that first thing right. Make sense?” If only Oriel had that kind of self-control. He wished he did.
