The BasicsName: Felix Marine (Mah-rin) Arnaud (Arr-no)
Nicknames: N/A
Age: 23 (Jan 17, 1992)
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Library Assistant at Hammel
Powers: Locational Perception
Felix's senses are not constrained by his physical body; instead, he can sense an entire area around himself. For the purposes of sight and touch, he can perceive objects within a certain radius as if he were next to them at every possible angle, and his “periphery” vision extends a little beyond what he can acutely sense. Thanks to his years at Hammel, his control over the power has been fine-tuned, and he can with much effort tamp it down to a simple heightened awareness of his immediate surroundings, but it's fairly uncomfortable (imagine walking around with the wrong prescription lenses and cotton in your ears). Passively, his non-local senses extend to five feet with perfect acuity, with his “periphery” fading out around ten feet. If he focuses hard, he can double that range, but the effort quickly produces migraines and nausea.
This strange mode of sensation means that Felix tends to unsettle people in social situations. He often forgets to turn and face them when speaking, and rarely looks people in the eye (since, from his perspective, he's already looking them in the eye). In addition, while he can still see into the distance with his actual eyes, Felix frequently forgets about his physical sight and touch, focusing only on those things within his area of perception.
This power also includes a greater capacity for mental processing and concentration than most people possess, and thanks his years spent honing the talent Felix can flip back and forth between several open texts simultaneously. This power is limited, though, and Felix still finds himself bumping into things with greater frequency than normal, and becoming overwhelmed by the depth of his perception, sometimes nearly to the point of panic, when his surroundings are especially busy or crowded.

Eye Color: Gray-Green
Any Piercings? Nope.
Any Tattoos? Nuh-uh.
Any Scars? Many minor ones from cuts and scrapes; two on face (right cheek, running horizontal from half-inch above edge of mouth to sideburns; upper lip below left nostril); three on limbs (quarter-sized burn scar on back of right hand; long straight scar on top of left arm; diagonal scar on top of right foot)
General Appearance: Felix isn't exactly an imposing figure; at 5'9”, he's of medium height, and he tends to slouch on top of that. The man is solid, though; he has shoulders that are just a little wide for his height, and he has a mix of muscle and fat on his frame that gives him the appearance of a young man used to manual labor. In general, Felix has very few sharp edges; his features are all smooth and rounded. His ruddy complexion and reddish skin add to the overall impression of cheer and comfort, aided by his full beard (which he usually manages to keep at a reasonable length), and if his gray-green eyes have perpetual bags under them, they're more expressive for it. His curly, light brown hair tends to obscure them, though, hanging in an unorganized mop around his head. The light does strange things to both; his eyes go from near-slate to near-emerald depending on the surroundings, and blondish highlights are revealed in his hair by the sun.
The metahuman's posture matches his appearance, for the most part; he's a sloucher and a lounger. His movements are casual and more often than not clumsy, and he tends to stumble a bit when walking.
As far as clothing goes, Felix tries to strike a balance between comfort and what he sees as fashion. His wardrobe is made mostly of denim and button-downs, ranging from dress shirts and nice jeans when he's trying to make an impression to old flannel shirts and worn-through Levis when he's not. He owns a few hoodies, but wearing one is generally an indication of either greater-than-normal laziness or proximity to laundry day.
Personality: Most of the time, Felix tends to go with the flow to an almost ridiculous extent. He rarely complains about things that actually bother him (though he's more than willing to sarcastically moan about things that don't), and takes a general attitude of letting sleeping dogs lie, even if those dogs happen to be blocking his way. He's often too careful about trying not to bother other people, though it's balanced by the fact that he can be oblivious enough not to realize when he's doing so.
Still, he's aware enough to realize that he's not a social prodigy, and when he's with people he knows well he can really come out of his shell. In the right company, Felix can be goofy or witty, but there's almost always an undercurrent of concern and empathy for others, even when he tries to keep them at a distance from his own problems. It's this quality as much as his powers that often causes Felix to retreat from social situations, and into books and research, where he can regain the energy spent worrying about others.
That side—the intellectual side—is where most of Felix's frustration tends to come out. As nice as he can be while shooting the breeze with friends, he gets irritated quickly by arrogance on academic matters. In fact, arrogance of any type tends to raise his hackles, and can ironically lead him to make the kinds of absolute statements that would anger him coming from others. When it comes to his friends, he can usually put a lid on this emotion and express it more positively, but it doesn't always work and he doesn't always try.Your VicesLikes: books, beer, smoke clouds, walking on abandoned streets or paths, cats, sculpture, unhealthy food
Dislikes: crowds, ignorance and arrogance (especially in combination), steamed veggies
Strengths: academic research and theory, three-dimensional art, diffusing social tension
Weaknesses: dealing with large groups, maintaining balance and not bumping into things, balancing responsibilities
Fears: his own indecision, offending close friends accidentally
Secret: he's interested in library science, but the other half of the reason for his career choice is that it takes less effort than the STEM majors his parents pushed him towardsFamily TiesFather: James “Jimmy” Arnaud
Mother: Janine Arnaud
Siblings: Tyler Arnaud (Brother, 16)
Any Other Important People: Gonzo (Housecat)HistoryFelix was born and raised in south Texas in a Protestant family, and while they were supportive of him from a young age, living in the middle of nowhere didn't exactly help the naturally shy boy make friends. Sending him to a private Catholic school didn't help much; being with the same few kids and having to clumsily explain to them (as only a grade-school child can) why he wasn't receiving communion or confession with them didn't make for a particularly social childhood. It only got worse as he hit puberty; though some clumsiness was expected of children as their bodies changed, Felix started bumping into walls and tripping over steps with alarming frequency. When, on the third day of extreme clumsiness, Felix ran straight into an (admittedly thin) window, his parents brought him to their family doctor, who suggested blood tests. The tests came back within a week. presented to them in their home by two men who sat them down and told them about a special school that might help the young boy with his problems. Felix, until this point reluctant to burden anyone else with what he thought wasn't that serious of a problem, finally admitted under questioning by the recruiters that his sight and touch had “gone weird”, and that it was difficult for him to tell where he was going at times.
His parents worried over what to do about their son's condition, but in the end they knew what had to happen; Felix had only been getting worse, and it seemed that without training it would only be a matter of time until he wandered into the street, too wrapped up in his area of “sight” to see a car coming.
The paper work was done quickly. Felix arrived at Hammel at the age of 12, exactly two weeks after his powers had manifested, and found it more welcoming than he could have hoped. It was certainly a more diverse place than the little Catholic school had been, and more populous than the isolated ranch home he had grown up on. He didn't turn into a social butterfly, but he did manage to make a few friends—and more importantly, he found the library. During his years at the school, Felix spent many an afternoon in the library, and sitting on the floor with three or four books open around him soon became a sanctioned part of his training. Though it didn't stop him from being significantly clumsier than normal, Felix developed enough that he never did wander in front of a car, and when it came to books and research, his power made life incredibly easy.
After graduating from Hammel, Felix could have gone out of state, but apathy and a sentimental attachment to the area resulted in him attending the University of Vermont and getting his BA in English. Though he intended to apply to graduate school and get a further degree in Library Science, he couldn't bring himself to abandon Vermont just yet, and instead decided to take a year or two off and work in Hammel's library, where he had spent so much of his time.
Roleplay ExampleTo her credit, Catarina's smile didn't falter, though it did go a little cold. This wasn't quite the situation she had been expecting. In fact, it was a rather poor position for a reporter to be in. She was used to being the predator, extracting facts from often uncooperative witnesses--and she usually did that by making sure she was prepared and they weren't. She had come in to this meeting blind, sure, but she hadn't anticipated being offered an interview. Maybe some juicy tidbit that was weighing on the new guy's conscience, or perhaps a warning to stay away from his men--as if--but definitely not an interview.
Cat's eyes moved over the papers on the desk, though she already knew what was printed on them. Being in this situation made her feel a little sorry for all the people she had done this kind of thing to over the last few years.
Well. Almost.
The reporter settled in her chair, brushing a loose hair from her face and turning towards Nick the same analytical gaze she had swept the room with just a moment before. This new captain was either good at playing the game, or he had no idea what he had just done. And you know? I'm honestly not sure which one I'd prefer to believe. Cat spread her hands, gesturing to the papers spread before her, a motion that conveyed a sort of acquiescence to reality.
"Well, it seems you do your research as well, Nick.” She put a finger to her lip, in a play-gesture of thoughtfulness, and the smile regained a bit of its warmth. "I suppose it would be fair to warn you that if you managed to get me to have a conversation off the record, then you'd be the first to do it." She extended the hand towards the papers on the desk again as she spoke. "I'm glad you're not asking me to defend my work to you, but having read it, you have to realize that I might be a little skeptical of any olive branch offered by your organization. I've made a career off of reminding everyone that the ONB aren't all Eugene Chaud, and occasionally reminding them that Mr. Chaud wasn't the model public servant either."
Cat shook her head and folded her arms, leaving her PET in plain view. "Still, if you're offering me an exclusive interview with the new head of Cyber City's ONB, I can't afford to turn you down. Why don't you start by telling me what you want me to know about you?" In her defense, the question was only partly a stalling tactic. There was the chance that Nick would give her something good right off the bat, and even if he didn't, an exclusive interview with him would make her editor jump with joy regardless of the content. More importantly, though, it would give her time to think of some better questions. An exclusive interview would make her editor happy, but some information about the inner workings of the ONB would make her happy. .What About You?Name: Willis
