Nao was focused, so much that while he knew that Ray was drifting around there somewhere, he’d essentially forgotten about everything going on around them. So Ray’s pleas to flee barely reached his ears. Nothing outside of this fight mattered. If Nao didn’t focus all of his attention on it, then he could make a mistake and get hurt. Moreover, Ray could end up getting hurt.
Aside from that, bullies like this one were something that Nao had absolutely zero tolerance for. That’s the reason why he so often came down on them hard and fast. If you gave them too much wiggle room, they’d think they could walk all over you. They wouldn’t take you seriously.
Well, this guy still wasn’t taking Naozumi seriously, proven by the fact that he didn’t leave when Nao told him to, despite already being aware that Naozumi could put up a defense with laughable ease. That first strike was a freebie. The second one was on account of Nao not expecting the man’s reach to suddenly extend. Now that he knew about his claws, Nao had no intention of letting the man get another hit off of him.
There! He was coming! And Nao could already see himself executing a body flip against this guy, which would quickly have him on his back with the wind knocked out of him. But then something white flashed past his eyes. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to distract the speedster from the split second that he needed to retaliate against the man’s charge. A split second later, Nao was sidestepping and turning, barely getting out of the way in time, and stopping several feet behind his attacker. He glared up fiercely at the flyer. “Ray!” he snapped at the hovering boy. “Stay out of this or get out of here! I don’t need your help!” Nao would later regret flinging such words so curtly at his best friend, but at the moment, Nao wasn’t thinking about how he looked to others. He just wanted to get this fight over and done with, and that meant no distractions, not even from Ray.
He panned his eyes back down to the man, keeping his gaze sharp and cold. “Now….where were we?” Naozumi may have been getting into this fight a little too much.
