It was late Saturday morning in the Home Ec. classroom as the musical talents of the All American Rejects was interrupted by the occasional whirr of a sewing machine. Though Maisie could be using one of the school machines, she had dragged her own small device up to the classroom in order to feel more comfortable as she worked on her project. At the moment there was just a pile of different fabrics and a haphazardly decorated dress form with a billion different pins stuck into it. Maisie had been working on the same project for a month, a patchwork skirt for her older sister that would be stylish and not at all strange and out of place in the posh settings she often found herself in. She had just finished pinning most of the squares together and was starting to sew them carefully into place. She really wanted to finish in time for her sister’s birthday. Today she might be able to finish most if not all of it if she managed her time well and didn’t get herself get sidetracked.
Thankfully she was able to stay mostly focused on her task and had only taken one break so far. After she finished with another line of squares she turned towards the dress form and pinned that row of patches back to the skirt. Okay, now she was getting somewhere! She hummed in time to the next song and set her foot gently on the pedal of her sewing machine and ran another few pieces of fabric through the needle. The process repeated itself a few more times until she had another row of mixed fabrics ready to attach to the rest of the skirt. She turned and surveyed her half-finished work and realized that with some of the extra fabric she could simply make a dress for her sister rather than just a skirt. With that in mind she started draping fabric around the top of the dress form in order to choose the best option for creating the top of the dress she now wanted to make.
She was so absorbed in her task that she didn’t realize someone had joined her in the room until they made themselves known.
