Powers: Monarch Butterfly Communication and Control - Can communicate with butterflies with a specialty in the Monarch butterfly. Other butterflies would seem like listening to a different dialect or similarly sounding language, so she has limited ability to communicate with those kinds. She can also control them, though this is again limited by the butterfly type, with the Monarch being the easiest, however it is not a direct control over them. Instead she simply ‘asks’ them to do something with there being a high likelihood of them complying with her request. Side effects include often attracting an unnatural number of butterflies around her and possessing a constant scent of honey/nectar off her body which intensifies when she sweats. Another more indirect side effect is that she gets terrible hay-fever every spring and her sneezes tend to make the butterflies ‘jump’ and flutter around her before settling again.

General Appearance:

Aerina is a short, petite girl, standing only at a full height of 4’11”. Theoretically, she should still have some growing to do, but her mother’s not much taller than Aerina, so it’s highly likely that just barely breaking 5’ is about as much as she can hope for. Her hair is beautifully brunette and naturally curly, however she spends a good deal of time straightening it after showering. The humidity causes it to frizz uncontrollably without treatment, so she spends a lot of money on hair products. If she can’t avoid it, then that hair goes right up and out of her face any way it can. Combined with her height, this can make her look like a young middle schooler or even as young as an elementary school student! At 15 years old(practically an adult), Aerina gets sick of comments to her youth and so often tries to make herself look as mature as possible, both with her clothing and cosmetics.

Cosmetics, and other facial products, are absolutely necessary and she rarely(if ever) goes a single day without wearing it. While her dark olive skin looks smooth and healthy from afar, upon closer look one can see the scars and acne blemishes hidden underneath her strategically applied makeup. She wears a red bindi most days as homage to her faith. Other times, it’s just there for decoration and she uses a number of stick on gems of a variety of colors depending on what her outfit for the day calls for.

Clothing in her size that doesn’t make her look like a child is hard to come by, most of them involving a hem needing to be sewn in to keep her pants and skirts from dragging on the floor. On the plus side, a normal maxi skirt can be worn as a maxi dress(which she has indeed done before). Casually, Aerina prefers skinny jeans, something that will fill out her womanly shape, and stylish blouses, usually button-up or with a v-neck. Aerina likes to show off her painted toes, so will often wear open toed shoes and sandals, especially in the summer months. When she gets a sudden yearning for home, or when feeling particularly spiritual, Aerina will don more traditional clothes, typically a saree wrap(since she is too small for the 9-yard sari) or a shalwar kameez.

Personality:
Aerina is a bright little thing with a perpetually optimistic view on life. She may be considered a little sheltered, due to her family life, but also because she’s also spent the last ten years of her life diving head first in academia, resulting in her completing a majority of her high schooling by the age of 15, and will be dual-enrolled University of Vermont for the 2015-16 school year. School is very important to her and she takes it very seriously - she wants to enter the health profession(specifically pharmaceuticals), so she can’t afford to mess it up! - such that she often forgets that a social life is a thing. This can often isolate her from people, as it makes her seem anti-social. Her tendency to offer unsolicited information and butt her nose into other people’s business may also grant her the label of a ‘stuck up brown noser’. But when she does find herself in social situations, Aerina shines as bright as the sun, smiling and giggling as freely as any girl her age should.

Aerina is sharp and takes notice of many things, specifically of those that are going on with her friends. That is, when she’s around them. Her periods of isolation keeps her in the dark with their happenings, so it can weigh heavily upon her knowing that her own habits can make her seem insensitive and overlook her friend’s feelings.

Because of how secluded she can make herself, when Aerina does come out of her shell, she gives way very easily to the will of her peers, regardless if she thinks it’s a good idea or not. Aerina doesn’t want to seem childish or afraid, so she is often willing to do anything they ask/tell her in order to become more part of the ‘in’ crowd. Since she is studying abroad and is away from her family, Aerina is more liable to do this as she no longer has the same social expectations placed upon her that she would back in India.

Despite her cheery attitude, Aerina is very insecure with herself, mostly about her image. She thinks herself too short(so much that she’s often mistaken for being in middle school or even elementary!), and detests the acne that scars her face. Add to that, she’s due to get braces over the summer and she’s dreading what that is going to do to her social life. So her attempts at being outgoing may be a result of her compensating for everything that makes her weird and ‘uncool’.

Aerina does practice Vaishnavite Hinduism and keeps a small statue of Ganesha in her dorm room. While she is rather devout, she will eat beef on occasion, for its taste, it’s availability, and her own health. Marathi is her native language, however she was also taught both Hindi and English during her primary and secondary school years and speaks both fluently, though her English does come with a heavy accent. She has hobbies in dance(her mother’s influence) and in swimming, though she isn’t very good at the latter.

History

Aerina was born and raised within urban Mumbai, Maharastra, located in west India. Her parents weren’t very strict with her growing up, but they never felt the need to be since Aerina was typically a very well behaved girl. Her brother, however, had a bad habit of spoiling her rotten. Being several years older than her and being as much in academia as she was, Kasheem was always running around from here to there, either for work or school. Then when he’d return, he’d always make sure to shower her with a gift or three. This was how she developed such a strong interest in Bollywood movies, as they were one of the most common presents he would bring back for her. She would often mimic their clothing and cosmetic styles to make herself more ‘pretty’. Her parents didn’t quite like this trend in her, but since she didn’t cause a lot of trouble by herself, was an excellent student, and she remained devout in her faith(for the most part), they mostly let her have her fun, dreams and fantasies.

The most outrageous thing she had done, and was scolded(and punished) for, was when she snuck out to get a tattoo when she was 14 years old. The artist was an acquaintance of her older brother and had aspirations to becoming a tattoo artist in the future, so he was giving them away for free as a means to gain more practice. When she returned home and showed her mother, she was slapped immediately(and repeatedly) for doing something so foolish. Her father was also displeased, but the one who got his ire was Kasheem for having gotten Aerina involved with his hoodlum friends. His punishment left him with more than just a bruised cheek. In the aftermath, Aerina apologized to her brother and for having caused him so much trouble. As always, he reassured her that all she had to do was continue being the best student, daughter, and sister that she could be, and all would be well.

Aerina had always done well with academia from a young age, however her parents felt that her intellect was wasted in public school, therefore she was enrolled in private school when she was seven. From there she advanced quickly and by the time she was 14, Aerina had completed most of her secondary schooling. It was also that year that she manifested, in the month of December 2014. Aerina was walking home from school with her friends when a butterfly landed on her shoulder. Aerina thought it was adorable and cute, and didn’t think anything of it. However, soon after, another one joined. And then another. By the tenth butterfly, Aerina’s friends were starting to become unsettled and suggested that it was a sign from the gods as a symbol of rebirth, or awakening.

It took a week before recruiters from Padhaai Guni arrived to announce her status as a meta-human to her parents and take her away to the school. She stayed there until the end of the school year(in March) before she was ready academically to take the upper secondary examination, but as she was not old enough to do so, she only had reason for power development to stay at the meta-school. Her parents agreed it would be to her advantage to transfer to the American school and continue her academics there, as she would be allowed to have duel enrollment with the local university there. It was for the best, either way, since she would be allowed more academic opportunities in the United States and not denied them on account of being a woman or being pushed out from a spot from affirmative action caste laws.

Aerina will start her first academic year at Hammel in the fall of 2015 and will be dual-enrolled at the University of Vermont while she finishes her high school requirements and continues her powers training.
