Cecil flipped over one of the burgers, checking the underside to see how it was coming along. It was still a little pinker than he would like so he turned it back, before putting the spatula back down and taking a long swig of his cider. He was glad the weather was behaving itself today; the sky was clear and the sun warm but with a slight breeze stopping it being too hot and uncomfortable. The perfect mid-summer's afternoon.
Since arriving in Pilot Ridge Cecil had made many friends, a firm percentage of which worked at the Hammel Institute. He knew through word on the grapevine that the summer vacation was coming to a close, so he'd organised the barbecue today as a last hurrah for them all before they went back. Of course when it came to barbecues 'the more the merrier' tended to be the best way, and so he'd invited his other non-Hammel friends along too. He'd spent a small fortune on food and had put some of his own money behind the till to cover drinks, and he'd told people that they didn't have to bring anything along with them but if they wanted to, it would be more than appreciated.
For the event Cecil had closed off the little beer garden at the back of the pub. Normal patrons could still get their bar snacks and beverages but for the afternoon the garden was off-limits. As well as the human food and drinks he'd also bought a load of dog toys and treats, because happy dogs tended to be less likely to cause trouble. Mephit currently lay under one of the benches, gnawing on a large chicken treat, as the smells of cooking meat and roasting sweetcorn filled the air.
