Damien can travel within the shadows without detection becoming practicably invisible until he speaks or walk out of the shadow and of course is forced out by someone stronger than himself. His ability does drain him physically making him tired if he uses his powers for an extended period of time, his powers are also useless while standing in the sunlight or a very bright room. With a great deal of effort Damien is able to bend the shadows to his will, expand the shadow by making it larger (longer) roughly 5 times its original size or smaller (shorter) half of its original size from the source of the shadow; i.e. buildings, trees, and even humans and animals. The side effect of using this ability is migraines, mild nausea, fatigue and light sensitivity.

Personality: When it comes to people that Damien doesn't know he comes off as shy and a bit shut in, he was never a guy that would strike up a conversation with a random new person. But if Damien knows you he will not hesitate to start up a conversation without hesitating. Damien is a nice person the majority of the time but does come off as blunt sometimes but only when people need to hear what needs to be said and not sugar-coat the topic. He can be classified as an active person though he does not play any sports, hes is excited about a lot of things as long as they are things that interesting him such as learning new things, video games, music, movies, etc. His analytical skills are amazing but he is a bit indecisive, so making an important decision is hard for him because he likes to make sure that he covers all of his bases, balancing out the pros and cons to decide if he is going to be in a lot of trouble.

History

        Damien was born in a small village just outside the Albany, New York but wouldn't classify it as his home. The reason being is that his mother, Monika's, job had her relocated several times over his childhood. Between the ages of 6 months to his 11 year they had lived in New York, China, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand and Canada. Within time Damien began to understand that his mothers job was the reason why they had moved around so much. His father, Anzi, on the other hand was not as understanding as his son. Anzi wanted stability in his life, to stay in one spot and grow old like normal human beings but he could not stand the constant moving and eventually he separated from Monika, first it was separation but eventually evolved into divorced, not out of hate for His wife but out of love for stability. At the age of 8 years old Damien grew to enjoy the traveling, getting to know new people and exploring different cultures was what he loved the most about his mother job. His schooling did take a slight ding over time, with all the moving and new languages that he needed to learn his focus on school varied depending on how quick he can learn the language.

            By the age of 13, he was living in Minnesota at the time, his abilities began to activate at random, mostly at night. His room was the basement, which was fully furnished with bedroom and a small living room like area, he preferred it to the 1st floor rooms, his affinity for the colder weather and darker environment was the reason why he enjoyed it. He had been know to sleep walk anytime he was deeper into his sleep than normal but with his lack of control of his ability he would end up waking up in the basement living room and every one in a while he would wake up laying on the washer and dryer. He couldn't figure out why he would be waking up in odd and different locations. He chalked it up to his sleep walking but when he started waking up on the upstairs living room floor his mother had come started to realize that his abilities had come to the surface.

            Because of her work there was little for her to do about it but when she had recalled her past experiences with her own powers, her years at the Hammel Institute came rushing back to her, she had attended there Vermont location at roughly the same age as Damien. Her studies at the institute is were she had mastered her Telepathy and Precognition but didn't see this coming. Monika contacted her former institute for help but when she called, they had been already in transit to come and having Damien attend there institute. Damien listened to his mother and understood what he really was, a meta-human, and needed training to control his abilities. The following day after calling Hammel, the facility officials came to his home. Damien and his mother parted ways but staying in contact as much as they could.

            Damien started attending the Vermont Institute, since it was located in the states and English being his native language, the schooling was a lot more pleasant. There was not any barriers that he needed to overcome before the learning process began, other than learning to stay in one place while sleeping. He had decent grades, not the best but certainly better than those from when he went to school overseas. After some training and adjustments to his sleeping routine he had managed to control his movements while he had slept, he discovered that he was not sleep walking but actually wandering through the shadows of night. He also realized that he could do the same while he is awake. Morphing and bending shadows and shade from object both living and non-living things became something that he grew to understand. Damien is still growing stronger and more powerful as his schooling progressed. Because of his darkness abilities there were some downsides to it all, sunlight sensitivity and headaches plagued him almost constantly whenever he used his abilities. Which is why Damien is always seen wearing a hoodie and sunglasses whenever his is outside and since his outdoor activities are limited because of his side-effects making friends were harder because he couldn't go anywhere fun until the sun started set. His contact with any friends is mostly during school hours or after sundown.

"I HAVE TO PEE!!!!!" Selina screamed to the white bathroom door, more so, her pain in the ass younger brother that was on the other side of that very door. "You be quiet." came a crackling voice, the brother, beyond the door. "Drew, if you do not remove yourself from the room this instant I will use your bed as my personal toilet." It was the only gross thing that she could think of that would disgust her brother to the point of possibly leaving. "You wouldn't dare." Bellowed the brothers voice. Selina made a noisily showing of walking past the bathroom door and towards her brothers room. With a scream from the bathroom, there mother, Barb, came rushing up the stairs to figure out what was going on. With noticeable sniffles from the inside of the bathroom Selina's brother snitched on his sister. Selina silently came back from the bedroom without relieving herself, she smiled openly and spoke to her mother, "He has been taking forever in there and I have to pee like really bad. What would you have done?" The mother laughed to herself without letting either of her children knowing it and knocked on the door to the bathroom, the door whipped open and a towel-clad young boy of 8 years old stepped out, eyes red and snot flowing freely from his nose and tiny tendrils of water dripping from his still wet hair. Words would have been passed between them but torturing her brother was something she rarely did unless it was to get her way. Selina smiled once again and closed the door to do what she set out to do.

Not Quite

Welcome to Hammel, Damien! We love to have new players, but Damien requires several edits before he can be accepted for play.

The first has to do with his power. I think there was some confusion about the power explanation you received. When staff said that powers are reviewed in the context of the application, we mean that we read the full-write up and then decide if a particular interpretation is too over-powered or otherwise beyond the scope of the game. Since Shadow Manipulation has so many potential variations, you need to include a write up of how the power works, including limitations and side effects. If you want to keep the site side effects, you can copy and paste those, but we need to see everything together.

Second, since he's underage, where did he get his tattoo?

Third, the personality section is a bit confusing. Everyone is sometimes serious and sometimes cheerful; what the personality section is intended to demonstrate is what traits are the strongest, and what situations might cause your character to deviate from their more dominant traits. At the moment, we don't have a good sense of Damien as a person.

Likewise, the strengths and weaknesses are not necessarily intended to compare your character to other people, but to compare with himself. What areas is he strongest in? Even if his best is mediocre compared to other people, it is still a strength for him. This can include artistic skills, athletics, scholarly pursuits, social skills...surely there is something that he is better at than other things.

Next, the history is rather vague, but since it mentions Damien helping his mother grieve does this mean that she lives in Vermont? Or did his help necessarily come over long distance communication (which might be somewhat easier on him given his power)? Additionally, although you mention that he manifested at 13, you don't include information about how the manifestation occurred or how he was recruited. These are important details that should be included, keeping in mind that he would be found within two weeks of initial manifestation, or less, depending on the nature of his manifestation or how close he lives to Pilot Ridge.

Finally, he has been enrolled at Hammel for three years, which is a significant period of his life so far. Please include a paragraph or two about his experiences at the school. Has he made friends (since you mention he struggles with this)? How does he like it there? How is his training? How are his grades?

Getting There!

Hello Damien,

While this is much improved, I do have two small items to address.

First, for how power, can you elaborate on how big or small he can make a shadow from it's original size? As well, adding in fatigue and light sensitivity as side effects, as these always go hand in hand with that type of power. I do see you included light sensitivity in his history, so just adding it up by his power too would be perfect.

With regards to his history, the most time we allow for between manifestation and recruitment is two weeks, which is usually for fairly benign powers that are harder to detect. With his mother contacting the institute for him, the recruiters would have been there much more quickly. Depending on when she figured out his powers, they may have even detected him before she had figured it out. Please either shorten this, or have the recruiters come prior to his mother figured it out. Either way, two weeks at the moment between manifestation and recruitment.
