General Appearance: Sapphire has a thin, streamlined frame, taller than most women at 5’9”. On closer inspection, she also has layers of rock-hard tone in her thighs, calves, and abdomen, being a very athletic person, though her slim body type deceptively makes her appear otherwise, especially under fitted clothing. She has a youthful face, much softer than her attitude gives away sometimes, her cheeks a natural pink that prickle with red whenever she flushes, either from shyness or physical exertion. Sapphire keeps her hair short, revealing the nape of her long, slight neck.
Sapphire dresses in a style that might be described as ‘boyish’, though because of her family background, she’s still fashion conscious in her own way. She doesn’t do sun-dresses or evening gowns, preferring faded skinny jeans and other sorts of slacks instead, but she might do a knee length black skirt. Definitely no mini-skirts either. Sapphire likes to emote a mature sort of elegance over the more common ‘sexy’ style. Collared shirts and simple t-shirts are her preference over blouses, while colors tend to be of earth tones, dull blues, and other cool colors.
Personality:
Sapphire is a person who is passionate about her interests and hobbies. She takes pride in her accomplishments, but doesn’t rub them in other people’s faces. She hates that sort of behavior. Just like there are bad losers, there are bad winners, and Sapphire likes to keep her attitude hovering around the middle of that spectrum. Sapphire values humility as much as she values putting 110% into everything she does. She takes praise as it comes, but readily acknowledges those who are more skilled than her, and rather than gloating over her accomplishments, she would encourage her underclassmen to be the best they could be as well.
Her background with her elder sister is part of, if not the primary, reason for why she exercises humility as much as she does. Yes, Emerald has an IQ of 170, that is undisputed, and she has many, many academic achievements, but what bothers her so much about her elder sister is the fact that to her parents, and to instructors and so many others, Emerald can do no wrong simply because of her intelligence. They use it as an excuse to overlook her flaws, praising her as some ecclesiastical being. Simultaneously, yes, Sapphire’s own accomplishments become overshadowed, because Emerald always seems to be not only shamelessly, but innocently stealing the spotlight. Sapphire herself maintains a 4.0 GPA while in college, and did so in high school as well, but because she was on the normal track with the rest of the students, and had an IQ measured (more than once) at only 135, her accomplishments were never appreciated quite as much. In short, Sapphire’s animosity towards her older sister has everything to do with everyone’s else attitude towards her more so than her sister’s, who was just...smug. Gloating. And because people praised her for being ‘humble’ by ‘sacrificing’ her intelligence to be a history teacher. How incredibly selfless of her!
It’s that kind of attitude that makes Sapphire roll her eyes at the insanity and irrationality of the world. Sapphire is a realist, a level headed person, a very grounded, down-to-earth person. She prefers to look at the bigger picture, which makes small things like petty sibling squabbles and adolescent boyfriend problems unimportant to her, and things that she’d rather stay away from 100%. She is amazed at how worked up people get over silly disagreements, omg-you-offended-me-on-the-internet complaints, and other trivial matters such as those. If she can avoid them, she will. Hence why she avoids a relationship with her elder sister, because she doesn’t trust herself to not lose her patience with that woman.
Yes, Sapphire lacks patience, despite her strides to be the better person. In the first few minutes of a conversation with a new person, Sapphire instinctively decides whether or not this is a person she wants to surround herself with. Not because they don’t agree with her value system, because everyone is entitled to their opinions, but mostly because she wants to avoid people who can manage to push her buttons and turn her into someone she doesn’t want to be.
That said, it’s actually pretty hard to push her buttons as she is, as she would say, rather thick-skinned. Petty things, petty offenses, etc, aren’t important enough for her to get upset about, so she tends to brush off those sorts of comments completely. Maybe she’ll counter with a quip of her own, but for the most part her reaction is “really? you’re so stupid you said that?”
Sapphire doesn’t consider herself to be a traditional ‘girly’-girl, instead proclaiming herself to be very much a tomboy. She’s rowdy, swears, runs and wrestles, more often than not with her group of guy friends. That isn’t to say that she doesn’t know how to clean up and act a more proper lady, like her parents wish of her, but it’s simply not her style. Sapphire prefers freedom to be who she is rather than conform to any set of standards. She learned a long time ago that she is a lot happier doing things for herself rather than for the approval of others.
Sapphire has found that when she does let herself care about the little things, she cares too much and can get so involved and emotional about it that she will devolve into furious quibbling at an attempt to convince someone to see her point of view. Fighting with minds that won’t change frustrates her so much that she tries to avoid it altogether. She doesn’t like the person she becomes when she gets too emotionally invested in a particular topic, and that’s another reason why she prefers to not take things so personally, or avoid people who would rub her exactly the wrong way.Your VicesLikes:

For her whole life, Sapphire Parker lived in the shadow of her older sister. With nearly a ten year difference between them, they were far apart enough so that they needn’t even interact during Sapphire’s childhood, as Emerald was taken care of by their grandmother and off doing “big girl” things in New York. However, at home, she still couldn’t get away from hearing about that girl’s constant achievements. “She went to college at such a young age!” “She’s doing this program while doing this thing and that thing, all at the same time!” “Perfect scores every time, that’s my girl!”
When she was still in elementary school and middle school, Sapphire too tried to live up to these standards. Academics came easily to her, such that she never got anything less than an A in any class. She was friendly with her classmates, and an active child as well, having an aptitude for sports and rough play. However, even Sapphire couldn’t achieve college by the time she was 13, and it was around this time that she realized that she and her sister just weren’t on the same same playing field, therefore there simply was no possibility of competition between them. It didn’t help that her elder sister didn’t recognize her as such either, that girl was so self-involved in her own life that sometimes it seemed like she barely realized she had a younger sister. At least, that’s how it seemed only towards Sapphire. Ruby was blessed with the attention that the youngest usually received in any family, including this one, from both her elder sisters.
Perhaps it was just a matter of bad timing? During the times when Sapphire and Emerald would naturally have bonded and grown close was the time when Emerald was gone for her own schooling. By the time Ruby was born, she had much of that out of the way already. Whatever the reason, the same void did not exist between Ruby and Sapphire at all, the two sisters being very close, with Sapphire doting on the youngest with much delight. She would tutor the younger girl, and offer advice, especially when it came time for Ruby’s manifestation.
That was when she was still in high school, and after Sapphire had achieved the self-actualization she needed to not focus so much on her elder sister’s life in comparison to her own, which was something that occurred during her first few months of high school, when she was still at the impressionable age of 13. Up until then, Sapphire had long hair, wore the pretty dresses that her parents pushed on her, and delved into interests that, while she didn’t really find interesting, were expected of a young girl. When she got into high school, she immediately joined the cheerleading squad along with the track and field team, the latter being something she enjoyed immensely more than the former.
High school traditions, unofficially, exercised hazing and initiation rites for what they called ‘secret societies’(it was just a cheerleading clique), and Sapphire was no exception to this ‘tradition’. They came and stole her away in the middle of the night(with the permission of their parents, assuring them that they it was all harmless fun and games) and drove her blindfolded to their ‘secret base’, which was one of the member’s backyard with their parents out of town. ‘Initiation rites were fierce and lasted the length of a week, many of the ‘activities’ crossing the line between what was fun and what was safe. She had her hair pulled and doused in peanut butter. She was forced to smoke and drink alcohol. They left her butt-naked outside in the neighborhood and told her to find her way back to the house alone without getting caught, or she wouldn’t be on the team.
All these, among others, including humiliating activities conducted at the school itself(like ‘be a slave’ day, or wearing ‘will dance for food’ billboards), were just the tip of the iceberg. The final rite she had to complete was to steal a pair of red panties from one of the mall stores. At first, she simply went inside and paid for them, but the team members found out immediately and demanded that she did it again, or she wouldn’t be allowed on the cheer squad. The point wasn’t to get red panties, but instead to steal them. To do as the upper class girls told her to. They needed to know that she would obey their every command, no matter what it was. That was the last straw for Sapphire, and she refused outright. She wasn’t comfortable doing the rest of those things, and she sure as hell wasn’t going to do this either. The punishment for disobeying, in addition to not being allowed on the team, was outright physical bullying; they put out their cigarettes on her back and arms, they cut her hair in a disastrous way, she was kicked, they poured antiseptic into her open wounds, and then left her with the warning that if she told anyone about the rite, then they would do it again, and worse.
As promised, Sapphire never told anyone about the initiation, but she did quit the squad as she was supposed to. It was at this time that Sapphire realized how stupid and self-destructive it was to constantly be doing things at the expectation of others, just for their acceptance. She didn’t like half of her ‘interests’ in truth, she didn’t like her personal style, and she hated behaving in that stupid girl-clique way that the other girls expected of her. Sapphire shaved off most of her hair, stopped wearing dresses, and joined the wrestling team. She started asking her peers to call her by her middle name “Noelle” or “Noa” for short, since she always thought that the trend her parents did with her and her siblings’ names was idiotic.
Noa put her all into her sports activities, especially track, though didn’t let her grades drop either. At this point, it wasn’t so she could keep up with her sister, but rather because she wanted to do well. Noa graduated from high school 2nd in her class and with several track and field medals, and then entered university with both an academic and sports scholarship, allowing her a full ride in whatever program she wished.
With both her elder sister and younger sister in Vermont, Noa was encouraged by her parents to go be with them as well. After much pestering, Noa finally gave in, primarily for Ruby’s sake. Despite their poor relationship, Noa does worry about Emerald’s over-trusting nature, and her tendency to drink in excess, and fears that Ruby might see this as a good example and follow suit. Noa has transferred to the University of Vermont, is now studying athletic training as her major. She aspires to participate in the summer olympics of 2016, if she can manage to qualify.Roleplay ExampleWhoops, I made another one~What About You?Name: Ophelia
