Singing in Silence (Iris)

Mei had concluded yet another argument on the phone with that horrid woman that called herself ‘mother’ just that morning, resulting in Mei being unable to quell her anxiety completely for a majority of the day. One of the places she liked to go when her head was a little too full of everyone else was the rehearsal room, particularly after clubs had finished meeting. Even if they hadn't, Mei enjoyed the sound of brass in the background coming from down the hall, or enjoyed rehearsing with the chorus when they happened to be there.

Though her favorite time was certainly after the chorus had finished meeting. Mei would volunteer to stay after and clean the rehearsal room, or she'd come in and reorganize the music cabinets(because students were terrible at keeping their folders in any sort of order). Of course, when it was a time such as that, Mei might hum a tune or two. If she was feeling ambitious enough, and knew she was definitely alone, Mei's crystal yet thin singing voice would materialize into words. At the moment, the girl with the long, dark hair was half-singing, half-humming to an Amy Lee song playing in her head. She stumbled over the words a little bit, destroying her rhythm, but overall she enjoyed listening to the sound of her own voice. Vain? Only when she was singing.

Iris rarely came to the club rooms; she didn't enjoy singing, she wasn't a dancer (unless in the club! untz untz untz) and she was certainly not a member of the student council. However, she was skilled at light manipulation; some of the more flashier of the bands that gathered in the band room always wanted her to add some sort effect when they were videoing their performances.

The brunette didn't really mind, she loved practicing her ability, but it also meant she didn't practice her bioluminescense. That was probably why she lit up like a freshly cracked glowstick when she turned the hallway lights off, presuming that the clubs had ended.

Iris was about to leave until a clear but... seemingly hushed voice slowly began to fill the air around her. Iris was a simple curious creature. Despite her vibrant glow, her footsteps were silent; well practiced to scare the shit out of her brothers. Staying quiet and slowing her breathing, the brunette made it over to the rehearsal room.

The beautiful singing was coming from within. Feeling extra stealthy, Iris opened the door very slowly and peeped in; spotting another student singing all by her lonesome. It seemed odd, people sing to make others happy, right? The girl's words stumbled slightly but quickly picked themselves up again and continued to flow around the room.

Edging the door open so it didn't creak, Iris moved incredibly slowly it the edge of the doorway and lowered herself to the floor; keeping an eye on the other student. She was still glowing faintly, the floor underneath her reflecting some of the light. The brunette then listened to the girl's performance in silence, unaware of how creepy she was being.

The song seemed to slow slightly and Iris, being the impulsive person she is, began to clap; unsure if the song was over or not.

Mei wasn’t one who enjoyed her own voice being heard by anyone else. She could sing at the top of her lung as long as she was certain that nobody could hear her. The only other time when she would sing was when she had the entirety of the choir voices there to drown out her individual voice. Mei did enjoy blending her voice amongst the others, allowing herself to become one small, but significant part of the whole.

The idea of anyone actually hearing her was mortifying. Had she realized that she was being spied upon, Mei would have stopped instantly and pretended that she hadn’t been doing anything. Or she would have rushed away before anyone could say anything that pointed out her attention drawing activity.

As it was, that’s exactly what she was aiming to do when she suddenly heard a very loud clapping from behind her.

Mei’s face instantly turned a berry-red and she spun so that her sleek black hair whipped around her face and settled over her shoulder, staring with wide eyes at her sudden audience. Her mouth hung open, yet no words came out, be they from song or not. She rested her palms down against the ridge of the table behind her and slowly dropped her gaze so that her hair could hide her super-flushed cheeks.

Silence seemed to be the thing right now, and so Iris remained as such. The brunette raised a hand and gave a small wave to the singing girl as she spun around to stare at her. Clearly she was unexpected. Her hand dropped back onto her lap and Iris sub-consciously scratched at the nail on her thumb as she watched the student who was watching her.

It was all fairly awkward. The girl's mouth was open and Iris opened her mouth to make a joke about catching flies but stopped as the student moved.

She didn't run away, that was a good thing. Though she did seem embarrassed, which was understandable. It wasn't everyday some sneaky weirdo sneaked into the classroom where you were singing by your lonesome in peace. That blush was adorable though, good lord I am being creepy, a thought burst into Iris' mind before fading.

Although she was sometimes crass, Iris can be mindful with a select few people. Rather than standing up and leaving, or standing up and walking over, the glowing teen remained seated; shuffling slightly to get more comfortable on the cool floor.

Waiting a few minutes, Iris opened her mouth again to speak, hoping she didn't scare away the shy student.

"Are you going to sing again?"

Who was this girl and what did she want? That was all that went through Mei’s mind at that point. Why was she watching her like some sort of creeper? She…she should’ve made herself known or walked loudly or something so that Mei could hear her coming!

As it was, Mei was too far into her own head to have heard the whispers of her mind approach, a fact that she could have cursed herself for doing. What good was telepathy if she couldn’t tell where people were with it? Either that, or she’d gotten a lot better at blocking out the thoughts of others than she realized.

As these things went over in her head, Mei’s shocked expression started to relax and harden slightly towards the girl who had intruded upon her. “No…” she said in her usual soft, stringy voice. You are being creepy, she projected to the girl with barely a thought to it. Oops. She let one get away. Oh, well.

Iris shrugged as the student replied with a firm no. She remained seated and opened to her mouth to ask another question when she heard an odd whisper in her mind. You are being creepy. At first she frowned and glanced towards the door frame, wondering who had whispered since the other girl was too far away. After a few seconds, Iris recognized the inner voice as the other students. How the hell did she whisper from all the way over there- oh right, telepathy. Iris isn't the sharpest knife in the block.

Suddenly, the light manipulator pulsed a bright red; both from her bioluminescence and an embarrassed blush. "Oh shit! Was I being creepy?!" She cried whilst trying to stand up. Her family constantly warned Iris that she tended to completely ignore peoples boundaries which makes her seem strange and, yes, creepy. Needless to say, Iris becomes useless when flustered and promptly stumbled forward, whacking her face on the floor.

With several more erratic movements, Iris pushed herself off the ground and stood facing the fellow student; her arm covering her nose with a black sleeve. "Sorry, I didn't mean to be."

Mei continued to stare, her eyes becoming gradually more fierce the longer she looked at the girl. Right away Mei was thinking that this girl was something of an idiot, though she supposed she couldn’t blame her for not recognizing telepathy right away. It was an odd means of communication, after all, and not everyone understood it right away unless they’d had experience with it before.

Mei didn’t respond with either a thought nor a word, she simply nodded her head at the question. She shrinked away slightly as the girl started to approach…and then promptly fell face first on the floor.

How…ungraceful, was her immediate thought, though she was sure she didn’t project that opinion out. Mei simply watched as the girl flailed about like a trout out of water and eventually pushed herself back up to her feet. Mei’s lips parted slightly, and her expression remained still. “……..it’s okay,” she finally managed with a slight blush all while trying to quell her instinct to flee. Are you okay? She didn’t hurt herself when she fell, did she?

Iris shook her head slightly as the girl spoke to her with her miiiind. Again. It was a really weird feeling, like a small piece of ice stuck on the inside of her head. But the ice wasn't cold, just.. there. It was still weird.

Iris moved her arm slightly. There wasn't any blood, even though she could taste it; which meant no nosebleed! The redhead threw her arms in the air whilst proclaiming "Huzzah!" However, she promptly dropped her arms again as she remembered the comment about being creepy.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Iris frowned as she felt her upper lip become wet and moved her hand to wipe at the water. It came away red. Her arm instantly jerked back upwards, blocking the nosebleed from going into extremes. "My nose is a liar, I'm fine." She said again - Iris wasn't worried about the nosebleed, they always stopped after a while when she was younger.
