Hokay, so in Eric's application I mentioned that he lived with a college buddy while he was fresh out of college and having a hard time finding a job. Well, if anybody would pick him up for a plot, I would love the squishy stuffings out of you!
How I see it is this: Eric had an immense crush on this college buddy of his but he was afraid to act on his feelings because he was under the impression that the guy was straight and he was also playing straight himself. So he used the 'friends' card to suggest that they get a place together, which they did, and I'm sure Eric was all kinds of tormented the entire time. Then Eric met his wife and moved out and lost touch with his special friend.
Well, now's the time for him to resurface! lol Maybe he WAS straight but Eric's been carrying a torch for him all these years, and at some point he will have to confess his feelings. (He's gettin' on in years, there's no time to pussyfoot around!)
Or the friend also had feelings for Eric but Eric was living the straight life and eventually even married, so... yeah. Wouldn't it be cute if they got back together and stirred up old feelings again? (While still under the impression that the other is straight. lmao)
But it's not fun to let characters be TOO happy so let's throw some drama their way if/when they get together. >: )
1) The daughter, Flora, will be a BIG opposing factor because she's shy around new people and she doesn't like it when people come around 'stealing' Eric's attention from her, since it's already reduced to just a couple of days a week. (I mean whatchu gonna do when an 8 year-old starts glaring at you, right?)
2) Despite him wanting to date and being lonely, I don't actually think Eric is ready for a full-time relationship. He's not as put-together as he thinks so tensions could eventually arise from him being a stubborn mule when things bother him. He seizes up. He withdraws. He definitely will pull back into himself, leaving his partner wondering what the heck is going on, because it might seem like he's becoming disinterested or disconnected. (Big miscommunication issue here.)
3) I see them maybe breaking up at some point because after the initial flurry of excitement, the distance grows. Eric starts stressing out over the custody battle, his job becomes more demanding, leaving him with less time to devote to his new relationship. Flora hates the new guy and he's always trying to placate her. All the things. Everything.
