Thread Roulette: Quiet in the Library

Midori Hawkins, Lip Romano, and Caleb Xue are helping the library reorganize its entire catalogue and set up for its annual booksale. Don't talk too loudly.

Lip was so. Fucking. Bored. How he’d gotten wrapped up in this fucking volunteer project, he didn’t know. Alex said that it would be fun for the two of them, and it was nice out. And since Lip was such a douchebag, it would do him some good to give back to the community every now and then.

He didn’t think he was that bad, but somehow Alex had talked him into signing up with her. Funny how she was the one who was outside planting trees and shit, and Lip was inside the fucking library sorting through books that were probably a hundred years old. He didn’t really think reorganizing their entire fucking collection of old ass books counted as ‘giving back’.

His sister was never talking him into anything like this again.

Really it wasn’t that bad. He could be picking up shit on the road or reading to annoying dumb kids at the elementary schools. He was just really bored, and the librarian had probably told him to shush about five times since he’d gotten here.

Lip picked up one of the texts on the shelves. It was an old history book, but it was in with their fiction section. This was clearly what the librarian meant when she said some people don’t put books back in the right section. Lip didn’t blame them. He probably wouldn’t either if he ever, you know, used the library. But where the fuck was it supposed to go?

This was going to be a long day.

Caleb was making his rounds to return the books back their right sections. Caleb had found three books that didn't belong in the youth fiction section. He took the three books to their respected sections. He went to the volunteer who was working in the adult fiction. "I got a couple of books for you." Caleb handed the books over. The other man looked befuddled at the history book in his hand. "How about I take that off you hands?" He smiled.

This wasn't exactly what Caleb wanted to be doing on such a nice day. He wished he had a job outside today. He wasn't going to complain. Caleb was helping the librarians get the library back in order. The librarians did do a good job keeping the library in order, but some books did slip by. With more hands and eyes those little slip ups were corrected. All the books got to go back home on the right shelves.

Midori had been happy to volunteer her time, regardless of the assignment. As it happened, she loved to read, and had a newly minted five year old at home that also seemed to love books. Bedtime wasn't bedtime if there wasn't at least one story involved.

Helping to organize for the upcoming book sale meant she'd get a sneak peek at what was going to be available, and she was more than okay with that.

Today she was feeling oddly... old, though. Both the boys she was working with were at least ten years younger than her, and at least one of them was clearly unhappy to be there. She found herself hoping that Tory wouldn't turn into a brooding teenager when the time came. She wasn't sure she could handle it.

She was going through a stack of children's books when the boys started talking again, and she turned to see what they were doing. "Is everything going okay over there?"

As Lip stared at the textbook, he contemplated whether or not he’d be able to knock himself unconscious by banging his head against the shelves a few times. After a few moments, he decided that probably wasn’t the best idea and instead thought it would be better to find somewhere to maybe nap. The aisles were endless and it was definitely quiet enough. He had no doubt that he would be able to find a corner that was tucked away. At least for a half an hour or so.

Unfortunately, his half-baked plan was scrapped before it was even put into action. Another volunteer, a boy who was younger than him, wandered over with three new books in his arms. Which were apparently for him. Great.

He handed over the history text in his hand, uttering an unamused, “Thanks.” Lip took the three novels from him, staring at their covers and wondering where the fuck he was supposed to put these. Clearly he should have been paying attention when his English teachers were explaining to everyone how to use the Dooby Decimal System, or whatever the fuck it was called.

Whatever. He’d just stick them in the back somewhere. No one needed to know.

But when the other volunteer walked over, Lip instantly tensed up a bit, feeling like he was doing something wrong. The woman was from Hammel; she’d been a part of the faculty when he was a student. And for some reason, even though he was finishing up his senior year of college, about to be a part of the adult world, he always felt like he was about to be reprimanded whenever he came in contact with anyone on the Hammel staff. Probably because he spent three years constantly getting reprimanded.

“Peachy.” He replied, starting to absently mindedly flip through the first novel. He’d have to at least pretend he was trying to find the its rightful spot before stashing it somewhere random and out of sight.
