The Basics
Name: Zane Carter
Nicknames:N/A
Age:17
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: Student
Powers: Superspeed. Zane is capable at moving at unbelievable speed. This includes all of his movements (including if he's not careful his speech) and very perception of the passage of time. He can accelerate faster than a race car and outrun one with a great deal of ease. For Zane, everything seems to be happening really slowly! On the downside, this leads him to very impatient and to have difficulty concentrating on any one thing for any amount of time.
It's also caused his metabolism to go a little crazy; he is almost permanently hungry and has an almost bottomless stomach. He needs to eat at several occasions throughout the day and full sized meals at that. Also, he tends to carry around a ton of snacks and energy bars with him for his munchies. If he doesn't eat, you'll find that he runs out of energy quickly. If he were to go for a day without food, he likely wouldn't be able to move at the end of it. About the only time he doesn't feel hungry is when he's sleeping, something he doesn't do much of.
The main issue with his power happens if he makes contact with something (an object, person, etc.) or falls over. To explain, whilst his body is capable of traveling at high speeds, it cannot cope with any impacts. For example, if he were to connect with something like a lamp post at 140mph, it would mean roughly the same thing for his body as being hit by a car traveling that that speed. Even falling over can lead to some quite serious injuries and grazes.
Don't make the mistake of assuming that because his brain works faster than most that he's a genius. He's no smarter than anyone else, it's simply that he processes and works in superspeed. Again, to Zane, it's not that he's fast, it's that the rest of the world is slow.

General Appearance: Zane stands at 5'11 and is still growing, he's hoping to make the 6' mark before he stops. He sports a lean and athletic build. Although permanently hungry, the teen views his metabolism as having some advantages, namely the fact that he can eat whatever he likes in gigantic portions and not put on an ounce. He's a dietitian's nightmare. Zane tries to give off the image of a chilled out guy and can frequently be spotted dozing around the campus.
He doesn't look all that different to any other teenager you might encounter down the street. As far as hair goes, he uses gel to keep his sticking up somewhat and shaves most of the time although it's not unknown for him to have some stubble either because he forgot or simply couldn't be bothered that day. When he talks, he generally speaks in a low voice rather slowly to the extent that he often gives the impression of just not caring about what you're talking about. The reason for this is that if he doesn't pay attention, he'll end up speaking too fast for anyone to understand and so often overcompensates. The same is true when moving, to avoid running around like a crazy thing, he has to try to walk slowly and so sometimes walks in a somewhat exaggerated manner.
Quite often, you'll bump into Zane wearing knee and elbow pads and many of his jeans have holes in the knees as a result of tripping over whilst using his power. As such, he doesn't tend to dress in very trendy or upmarket clothes as he tends to burn through them at a rate of knots, especially shoes. It's not unheard of for him to get through a pair a week. So if you see him walking around it will be in something simple and comfortable such as a tee-shirt and jeans. He tends to carry a pair of goggles around with him to protect his eyes in case of speeding.
Personality: Zane's a complex character, whilst he lives the world in the fast lane, he longs for a chilled out life. His idea of a good time is dozing in the warm sunshine without another care in the world. In that respect, he can be a little lazy and has developed the bad habit of procrastinating, something which pre-exists his super speed. He finds solace in music, generally alternative rock and likes listening to it through his earphones, perhaps a little too loudly at times.
Sometimes being around others can be something of a daunting prospect for Zane. He's still not quite used to the idea that he's the one out of sync with the rest of the world. Interacting with others can be a painful experience as from his point of view they are unbelievably slow. It's like watching a movie in slow-motion and his attention tends to wonder. The same is true for his classes and he can find it very difficult to focus on his lessons long enough to study properly.
Zane has a somewhat skewed view of morality. In his opinion, two wrongs can make a right at times and he's not above using his abilities for his own gain. He has a very low opinion of all things to do with authority. Having spent much of his life with nobody to really look up to, at the age of 17, he tends to think that he knows all there is to know about life. It comes across as a sort of jaded over-confidence. He feels as if no matter what happens, he can handle it and doesn't require any assistance.
When it comes to others, there are three categories as far as Zane's concerned: people he doesn't mind, people he dislikes and those very few whom he genuinely cares for. The majority of those around him fall into the first category. He'll be polite and for the most part respectful, heck, he might even laugh and joke with you but don't think that he considers you a friend. People he dislikes he tends to avoid like the plague, it's either that or he'll go out of his way to start up an issue with them. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty with a little fight and doesn't necessarily care which one of you comes of worse so long as he can land a few blows. As for friends... Well, it will take time. He's only really had a handful of friends throughout his entire life. He needs to know that he can trust you and that you're his sort of person first and that can take a while.
If you are his friend. You might get to see another side to him. He can be surprisingly loyal and once (if) you've managed to earn his trust, he'll stand by you to the end. Although, it is quite a rare event and for the most part, he leaves most people feeling luke-warm towards him.

History
Zane doesn't like talking about his family life much, largely because it was rather difficult for him. He was born in Los Angeles, as the eldest of 5 children into a poor household with a mother who had two part time jobs and a father who gambled away most of her meager earnings. With neither of his parents particularly able (or in Ricky's case willing) to look after the children, their oldest child found himself tasked with raising them. Whilst this did make him unusually mature and capable for a boy his age, it also caused him to grow up maybe a bit too quickly.
Upon entering his teenage years, Zane started to drift away from his family. Whilst he would - if prompted - make a meal or help his younger siblings, he no longer did so voluntarily. He would spend increasing amounts of time away from his home, preferring to kick around the streets or hang out with a group of friends. In reality, they were less 'friends' and more just acquaintances whom he took to following around.
Generally fed up and bored, it wasn't long before the teen started getting into trouble. With no allowance and lacking the patience and will to hold down a job, Zane took to more creative/illegal ways of getting what he wanted. It started with him simply neglecting to pay for certain small items such as chocolate bars and simply walking out the store with them. By the time he was 13, he's taken to pick-pocketing. Never much, usually just a few dollars if someone happened to have them in there but once or twice, he would take a wallet or a phone.
It was a hot day in August when a fourteen year old Zane first noticed that something was wrong. It started off when he was hanging around with his 'friends'. Without warning, those around him suddenly started to move as he perceived it very slowly. Initially, he simply presumed that they were messing around and trying to pull some kind of prank. He didn't understand why when he told them to "knock it off", they simply starred at him with a mixture of incomprehension and horror. Even their speech seemed to be painfully slow for an increasingly concerned Zane. Panicked, his friends quickly made a break for it leaving him still confused to make his way back home.
The journey back ended up answering some of his questions, albeit by terrifying him. He realized that it wasn't just his friends but that everything, people, cars, animals even the flies were moving as if in slow motion and he were the only one moving properly. When he covered half a mile in 10 seconds, Zane came to the startling conclusion that it was him rather than the rest of the world which seemed to be out of sync.
For the next few days, he would explore the potential of his powers. Largely by running around town. It was during one of these runs that he would have his first major accident. It ultimately wasn't much, he tripped whilst running over an uneven paving-slab and fell over. Due to his incredible speed however, the impact was akin to being hit by a car doing 40mph. He spent a good few days in hospital, recuperating. It was there that he was first approached by staff from the institute.
That was three years ago. Zane's been boarding at the school since and has pretty much settled into his new life. He still remains somewhat more cautious after his accident (and numerous other smaller ones) and is more careful when it comes to using his ability. As for his family, well... He keeps in touch with his siblings for the most part but doesn't talk much to his parents who want little to do with a mutant.
Roleplay Example
For the record, this is from a canine RPG and I've blocked out certain names of other players' characters with ****.
Winter's chill was here already. It had come on thick and fast and brought with it snow. An aging dog with an old and worn collar struggled along against a chilly northern wind. Even in his prime - something which he regrettably realized he was now leaving - the German shepherd would have found this weather unpleasant. Now, he found himself truly freezing as he made his way through these strange lands. Night caused the temperature to plummet even further. Ice had already begun to form on the dog's fur making a stark contrast with his otherwise brown and black coat.
His dark eyes scanned the forest. Coming out here so close to winter was a mistake. He should have stayed closer to the humans. Whilst they weren't perfect, their cities offered some comfort and at the very least, shelter from the winds and a supply of food. This wilderness now seemed like a strange, cruel and unforgiving place, especially as the last of the day's light faded.
The dog shook his head, he'd survived worse. How much time had the humans spent teaching him and the others he had been with the importance of not panicking. Right now, what he needed was a shelter, somewhere where he could wait out this storm. After that, he could see about finding another human city where he could spend the colder months. Perhaps, when spring and summer returned, he could come back out here but for the moment, he was going to acknowledge his own weaknesses and inability to continue on before it got him killed.
Finally, he spotted a dark entrance to a cave. It would likely be damp and probably not even all that much warmer than out here but he would be out of the rain and elements, as far as **** was concerned, that made it a better place to be. Trotting inside, he was somewhat relieved to no longer have cold snow under his paws but rather stone. Granted, it was unlikely to be comfortable but it was better than nothing... Shaking himself to dislodge the ice and some of the wet from his coat, the shepherd allowed himself to plop down on the ground, lying there and starring out at the on going storm. Yes, he was glad to be out of that...
